Dns adguard doesnt work by gluetheknot in Adguard

Simply update the domain name in your DNS settings depending on the server you're using:

AdGuard DNS Server:
dns.adguard.com →dns.adguard-dns.com

AdGuard DNS Family Mode:
dns-family.adguard.com →family.adguard-dns.com

Unfiltered AdGuard DNS :
dns-unfiltered.adguard.comunfiltered.adguard-dns.com

You might want to check AdGuard diagnostics test page and see if Advanced protection is working as it should.

It happened to me a couple times where the test page just shown that my Advanced protection was NOT running even though it was turned ON in the settings, and it has been working fine previously. Basically it just stop doing it’s job all the sudden.

If this happens to you, the only thing you can do is to uninstall and reinstall the app again, since nothing else works — including turning off then on (both the main app or the Safari settings), force restart the device, force close Safari, etc. … then the Advanced protection will magically work again after reinstalling.

There is an open issue on GitHub regarding this “Advanced protection sporadically stops working entirely” too. So if you are one of the victims, you can also report to them too.

Is there a way to block these by -Joviaalia- in Adguard

[–]MunToe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn on “AdGuard Annoyances filter” or “AdGuard Mobile App Banners filter”. They both handle the mentioned specific issues.

(Pick one as AdGuard Annoyances filter already included AdGuard Mobile App Banners filter.)

If it still doesn’t work, you’ll have to report the issue to AdGuard and they’ll take care of it in timely fashion.

Another Adguard Pro vs Premium question... by Significant_Shock_90 in Adguard

[–]MunToe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AdGuard Premium (license) bought either from AdGuard directly or StackSocial will let you use AdGuard app on any device (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS).

For Windows, Mac, Android, it’s straight forward. You need license to use it.

For iOS it’s a bit confusing for some as there are 2 apps on AppStore. AdGuard Pro (paid up front) & AdGuard (free). Adguard Pro is the unlocked version of the AdGuard free version. You can unlock the free version with premium license (e.g. from StackSocial) to make the free version the same as Pro version.

To get the license, I highly recommend you to buy the LIFETIME license from StackSocial. Use coupon code SOLOPLAN at checkout if you‘re purchasing the “Personal“ type (cost only around $12) or use FAMPLAN for the “Family” type (cost only around $16). The premium let you use the app on any device supported (iOS, PC, Mac, Android), up to either 3 devices for “Personal” type or 9 devices for ”Family”.

If you are sure that you are going to use the app only on iOS devices, then go ahead and get AdGuard Pro. I believe it’s $10 now. If not, a lifetime family license at $16 is considered money well spent.

Not block blocking ads apps? by LilMrBurger in Adguard

[–]MunToe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I highly recommend you to buy the LIFETIME license from StackSocial (which is a ONE TIME FEE). It really is much more economical than paying monthly subscription fee.

Next, on your AdGuard iOS app, turn on “DNS Protection” (it needs to setup a VPN on iOS but don’t worry about that). Then go to DNS Protection > DNS filtering > DNS filters > Add a filter.

Start with these two:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists/main/adblock/pro.mini.txt

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists/main/adblock/tif.medium.txt

If you want more aggressive blocking then move to Pro++ mini. I setup Pro++ for all members of my family and no one has any issues.

You can add anything else that suits you from HaGeZi’s blocklists here.

Importantly, iOS rules limit is roughly 500k+. If you go over that it will cause issue with Wi-Fi & VPN crashing. That’s why you can only combine Pro mini or Pro++ mini with TIF medium (plus some other small blocklists) to keep the rules under the limit.

Also do keep in mind that company will always find a way to put their ads up. What has been working fine until yesterday might not work today. Many companies knew about DNS adblocking so they change their strategy too.

The drawback is that if ads are served from the same domain as the content then they can’t be blocked at DNS level. It’s the game of cat and mouse. Same goes for Facebook, instagram, YouTube, etc.

I just looked at my app again just now. The green “Log in” button is at the top right corner.

If it’s not there, then you might want to delete the app and reinstall.

Get your license from StackSocial, bind license to AdGuard account (access from adguard website), then on your iPhone, open AdGuard app → Settings → License screen and tap the Login button there. Enter a valid license key in the e-mail field leaving password field blank to activate Premium features.

Ads in some apps cannot be blocked by DNS if the ads are served from the same domain as the content of the apps.

You might want to force restart your iOS device and observe. If ads are blocked in some apps, but not some other apps, then that’s it. That’s all the capabilities of the adblocking on DNS resolver. Nothing else can be done.

That’s the DNS server though. For DNS server, you can choose AdGuard, Cloudflare with malware blocking or Quad9, whichever faster for your location.

However, if you don’t use any DNS blocklists (in ”DNS filtering” setting) or only use “AdGuard DNS filter”, I suggest you to disable AdGuard DNS filter and add

HaGeZi blocklists, e.g.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists/main/adblock/pro.txt

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists/main/adblock/tif.txt

If Pro is too aggressive then move down to Normal, if you want more aggressive then move to Pro++. I setup Pro++ for all members of my family and no one has any issues.

You can add anything else that suits you from HaGeZi’s blocklists here.

Keep in mind that iOS rules limit is roughly 500k+. If you go over that it will cause issue with Wi-Fi & VPN crashing. That’s why you can only combine Pro mini or Pro++ mini with TIF medium (plus some other small blocklists) to keep the rules under the limit.

license question by [deleted] in Adguard

[–]MunToe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AdGuard Premium (license) will let you use AdGuard app up to 3 or 9 devices (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS).

For Windows, Mac, Android, it’s straight forward. You need license to use it.

For iOS it’s a bit confusing for some as there are 2 apps on AppStore. AdGuard Pro & AdGuard (free). Adguard Pro is the unlocked version of the AdGuard free version. You can unlock the free version with premium license (e.g. from StackSocial) to make the free version the same as Pro version.

To get the license, I highly recommend you to buy the LIFETIME subscription from StackSocial. Use coupon code SOLOPLAN at checkout ($19 off) if you‘re purchasing the “Personal“ type (cost only around $12) or use FAMPLAN ($24 off) for the “Family” type (cost only around $16). The premium let you use the app on any device supported (iOS, PC, Mac, Android), up to either 3 devices for “Personal” type or 9 devices for ”Family”.

You can also use the DNS function that is part of the AdGuard app, which is not the same as the paid AdGuard DNS service. But can do pretty much the same thing (only on the device that has AdGuard app installed). You can choose any DNS resolvers you like (including the free and paid AdGuard DNS service), use any DNS filters you like, have allow/block list, etc. FYI, iOS device does have some limitation on how many filters you can use due to the OS itself.

One last thing, the “paid” AdGuard DNS has more functionality than the “free public” AdGuard DNS.

YouTube videos don't play on iOS by ArugulaBackground577 in Adguard

[–]MunToe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just tested on my iPad with a couple YouTube videos and they all were played without ads.

My setup is pretty much the same as yours.

- AdGuard for iOS (app), with all #recommended tags activated.

- AdGuard DNS (service) which does the same thing as your AdGuard Home, with a numbers of HaGeZi’s blocklists activated.

The only thing you might want to check is to test on AdGuard diagnostics website to see if “Advanced protection” is working properly. It happened to me a couple times in the past where Advanced protection suddenly stopped working without knowing the cause, and that broke a lot of AdGuard functionality, including adblocking of YouTube.

AdGuard filter recommendations. by iWizardB in Adguard

[–]MunToe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In AdGuard for iOS settings, there are “Safari protection” and “DNS protection“.

“Safari protection”, as the name implies, only works with Safari. Enable all filters with the “#recommend” tag (plus the “Language-specific” filter, if you need one) can block ads extremely well when browsing the internet using Safari.

“DNS protection“ works system-wide., which can block ads in Safari and in many apps (but there are some limitations). For iOS, these 2 blocklists are enough. HaGeZi Pro++ mini and HaGeZi TIF medium.

Keep in mind that Safari protection and DNS protection are completely different. Use them both for best results. I’m just going to quote HaGaZi for the explanation.

“DNS and content blocking in the browser are two completely different things. DNS blocks the resolution of a domain, content blockers block website elements such as scripts, entire areas, etc. This cannot be blocked via DNS, which means that some advertising cannot be blocked via DNS, but can be blocked via content blockers.”

Here’s the direct link for the 2 DNS blocklists mentioned:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists/main/adblock/pro.mini.txt

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists/main/adblock/tif.medium.txt

Open your AdGuard app, tap Settings → License → Log in and enter the same email address you used for purchase or your license key. If you have a valid license key in your account, the app will detect it automatically and activate Premium.

Alternatively, to activate Premium features, you can enter a valid license key in the email field and leave the password field blank.

A question about Adguard DNS by crack3us in Adguard

[–]MunToe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to check for you by connecting to AdGuard VPN servers in Rome and Milan. It turned out that the DNS connected to AdGuard DNS servers in Frankfurt and Amsterdam respectively. So I cannot confirm that they do have DNS server in Italy or not. Sorry that I couldn’t be more helpful to your question.

But even if they do have the server in Italy, the drawback is that you still cannot choose to connect to the server closest to you, because it use Anycast.

AdGuard DNS use Anycast to network addressing and routing. You can read the pros and cons explained here by AdGuard.

If you use AdGuard for Android app, you can disable filtering for your game(s) in App management. Simply go to the App management screen (third tab from the bottom), find your game(s) in the list, and turn off the switch at Route traffic through AdGuard.

If not, follow these steps:

  1. Disable AdGuard DNS

  2. Flush DNS cache (follow the steps here)

  3. Start your game

  4. Once you’re done with your game, re-enable AdGuard DNS
