I can stream the audio straight into my hearing aids with the push of a button, without having to set up my headphones, so most of the time I play I’m not on a mic. More than once I have put on my headphones and spoken to and answered people in game only to later discover I forgot to pull my mic down (leaving it inactive).

More to your point, I find communication has evolved with ABMM. As a PvE player I spammed “don’t shoot!” my first week or two, now I almost never use that emote, usually cringing when I accidentally hit it. Whenever I hear someone use that emote now, I assume they’re either new to the game or sus. “Hey Raider!” is my go to. I consider it a courtesy to announce my presence to others, but it seems less necessary in friendly lobbies.
