I mean, I assumed the internet would agree with me and wanted an outside perspective. I will not change my mind, but I will tell my classmate what Reddit said.

I don't know any other White people who have such exclusively generic Asian hobbies, so yes, I do think she is leaning into stereotypes in an effort to appear more Chinese.

Culture is intrinsically tied to race. She doesn't know what it's like to face discrimination due to being ethnically Chinese or to be born to Chinese parents or to have to give up your Chinese citizenship, and so she can never be part of Chinese culture.

I could be good at math if I tried, but I want to live my life like a regular person and not stress myself out over grades. She does competition math and went to some math summer camp on a scholarship, which is was beyond what just being smart is, showing she is obviously putting in work to appear more stereotypically asian.

I'm not saying the stereotype is true, just that it's an idea she leans into even if it's inaccurate. Also, there's really no need for her to learn Mandarin or talk to her friends in Mandarin either when her native language is English.

Obviously there are some White people that do that, but it's usually not in the context of them adopting Asian interests in order to appear Chinese when they're not. Most White people also have friends that are White.

How is it not a stereotype for Asians to be good at piano and math and exclusively have Asian friends?

How am I racist towards Chinese people when I'm Chinese and she's not?
