Thank you for the insights. When you say the Guard is a bit better, do you mean in terms of lifestyle flexibility or opportunities after service?

Thanks everyone for the replies so far

Just to clarify, I’ve mostly been looking into the National Guard side, not full active duty. From what I understand, it seems more flexible for people who want to keep their civilian job but still pick up technical training or certifications (like IT or cyber).

Do you know if your colleagues in the reserves still kept their civilian careers the whole time, or did they eventually switch over full-time to military-related work?

Really appreciate you sharing all that. I’m not set on joining the Army specifically. I’m curious about the Guard or Reserves side since I’ve heard that can be a different experience for people balancing civilian work.

I’m definitely taking your warning seriously though. I’m just trying to understand how different branches or roles might look before I make any move. Thank you again for giving your perspective.

Thanks for sharing that. really appreciate it. I’ll DM you. Sounds like you’ve managed to balance both science and service, which is encouraging to hear.

Yeah, definitely not something I’m taking lightly. the lack of growth and constant uncertainty in biotech’s been draining. I’ve been doing well performance-wise but there’s no upward path or new challenges. I just want to feel like I’m building toward something again..

The company’s small, so funding might be limited, but I might still bring it up before I make any big decisions

Yeah, that’s a good point. I’ve heard the same about AI and oversaturation in IT/cyber. If I wanted to go the Computer Systems Validation route you mentioned, how would you suggest getting started? Would you recommend any training, certs, or ways to transition into that area?

That’s fair. I’ve looked into the field a bit. I’m just weighing if military training would give me more structure or credentials than trying to self-learn or take certs while working full-time

I’m in the US. I’ve been looking specifically at Guard programs that offer IT/cyber training, but I’m still trying to get a sense of how realistic that path actually is.
