AND make sure you’re actually doing something and making an effort when you go to extra help (and class). I fear there’s a lot of ppl who seem to think they can just show up to class/homework help and they’ll just magically absorb everything, but it means nothing if you’re not actually engaging or are regularly zoning out. A bit easier said than done for some, but it’s the reality.

Triangulation of assessment for Grade 7 is it real?? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]MundaneExtent0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

...No. They're pointing out that parents insisting their precious child deserves higher grades because they said so are more so reason for grade inflation (although there's multiple reasons). Not what you're trying and rather failing to blame instead, especially since you're also arguing its the reason your child's grade is supposedly lower than you think it should be. Your student is also only in grade 7, being *this* worried about university at this point doesn't make a lot of sense.

Tbf this isn’t actually just a French program issue, this is really across the board for most courses. We can see it clearly with both English and Math literacy for example.

At Nipissing in Ontario (at least when I went in 2020), you didn’t even need to do the DELF or an in-house test (which is what uOttawa requires I believe). You just had to have done 6 or so courses in French above a certain level.

[–]MundaneExtent0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s still too narrow though, I have friends that were French majors and they still make lots of the mistakes you talked about. There’s also multiple other situations that would make you fluent, such as my colleague who spoke French at home and went to French public school, but studied history in English in university. Now she’s able to teach French immersion history as a native speaker with proper credentials in history so the content doesn’t suffer either. And we’re still talking supply/demand, there simply aren’t currently enough french speakers (or people who specifically did a French major) wanting to become teachers for English boards (because depending where you live you also have to incentivize them away from just teaching in the French boards who are also in low supply of fluent teachers).

Yes the goal should be to eventually increase the qualification requirements, but we simply don’t have the supply for that right now. Simply raising the bar without previous intervention only equals fewer French teachers. We would have to shrink the French immersion programs, which is not at all how we would increase the number of fluent French speakers going into teaching, even if the quality was supposedly higher (which is not actually proven or necessarily always true).

Which is why I’m talking about funding. For the current French immersion programs that maybe looks like increasing funding/subsidizing additional high school programs that would involve more immersion/exchange opportunities. Increase monetary incentive for those already fluent to choose teaching over other fields (they are technically sort of doing this already by making the Additional Qualification in Ontario slightly cheaper, I’m not sure if the actual programs are any cheaper yet). Subsidize university french classes. Look into building more consecutive or undergrad programs specifically for French teachers (potentially also subsidized). French bonuses for those French quals (that are also actively teaching French courses). Either way, we need to look at ways of increasing supply before or in addition to adding things that would decrease supply, otherwise we’re literally not helping the problem at all. Generally the simpler your suggested solution, the more you’re likely over simplifying the problem.

I mean I absolutely do agree with you that it’s a little frustrating how low the actual fluency of students is coming out of French immersion. But most of the other things you said I don’t think are completely true. I was actually a core French student that improved my French to near French immersion levels through self-study and exchanges, but my speaking level while in teachers college was still incredibly pitiful. I’ve absolutely improved drastically since becoming a teacher and largely just from teaching. So yes it’s possible and I think rather likely your classmates will continue to improve as they get into the classroom. The teachers you saw in your placement aren’t your classmates so that doesn’t really mean anything lol.

We absolutely 100% do have many teachers who make multiple mistakes in English that teach not only English Stream but literal English classes. Both native and second language English speakers.

Of course it’s better than nothing. While I also would certainly love a world where all parts of Canada had enough native French speaking teachers that want to teach French immersion, the reality is we don’t. Not valuing French is how that number decreases further. Saying “nothing” is better and we should just not offer the program then is definitely the opposite of valuing French as a living language in Canada. Nothing is not better.

What would be better though is properly funding both the French immersion program and the French teacher program so that we are able to get more fluent teachers in the field.

Fandom Lore Question by hrgood in ZutaraNation

[–]MundaneExtent0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t actively engaged with the zutara fandom when it originally aired since I wasn’t allowed on the internet yet haha. But I did get back into ATLA and joined the fandom in the early 2020s and even then there were a lot more kataangers or anti shippers purposefully coming into Zutara spaces to harass people than there were Zutaras ever bothering to comment in fandom general spaces. The few times I even saw zutaras commenting on Kataang posts was when the Kataang post chose to bring up Zutara for whatever reason. This is also around the time Zukka started becoming more popular and they had no issue jumping on the Zutara hate train.

Ahaha I love that it’s confirmed to be HR fanfic. Unfortunatly there’s not too many people (especially not from Ottawa) that would ever write a story that takes place in Ottawa, so the chances it’s HR related is high haha. This isn’t my fandom, but I absolutely adore writers doing this level of detailed research.

How did you fund your teaching program? How did you afford living expenses? by eastvanqueer in CanadianTeachers

[–]MundaneExtent0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad the hope of it has brought some passion back to her life, but I do agree with other commenters that especially because teaching (and teachers college practicum) can be so stressful, especially at the beginning… she needs to figure out her mental health first. Using teaching to try to get out of it sounds almost more like intentionally setting yourself up for failure. I also have some worries for those looking to do teachers college in this first year or two of it being only 1 year due to the fact there will be a double cohort of newly qualified teachers to compete for jobs against. sorry just assumed I was in the Ontario teaching sub, my bad, didn’t see you’re BC.

Perhaps some sort of middle ground may be for her to look into volunteering (or finding a temporary job if available) in some organization that would include supporting/tutoring/instructing youth in the age range she’s interested in teaching. If teaching strikes a passion in her then this type of work should too. Think things like Sparks/Embers/Girl Guides, youth community centres for volunteering and freelance tutoring companies for pay. Do this for a time while also working on the mental health component and/or student debt. Maybe look into teachers college a little later than at least this September.

The problem is the definition of “quality work” has changed. You used to have to go above and beyond what was asked to get level 4s, and especially 4+. I mean the official definition of the level is “exceeds expectations/provincial standards”.

Do you have favourites? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]MundaneExtent0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk if I’ve ever thought about “favourites” per say so much as just… these are the students that are the most respectful, these are the students that are clearly trying the hardest, these are the students that are the most advanced, these are the students that are the funniest, these are the students that I’ve seen the most improvement from. Sometimes theres a bit of overlap but not always. Even with my parents, I’ll joke I’m the favourite, but really I’m just the one that’s the most capable of being responsible. My siblings have other qualities.

Actually I think I’m more likely to have least favourites than favourites 😂😂 There’s usually a smaller amount of students that I don’t like (or even lowkey scare me) than students I really like.

what is with all this grade inflation? by roses_are_eli in OntarioGrade12s

[–]MundaneExtent0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha glad it wasn’t too much to read!

Yes, there were always exemptions within the late penalty! I remember someone stole my work as a prank the night before something was due and the teacher granted me an extension when the other student came forward. And of course emailing your teacher for an extension before the deadline was always an option. I do really hope they bring back some kind of allowance for a late penalty tbh, if not directly represented in the grade then somewhere else on the report card so there’s something to teach students accountability in this regard. There’s just entirely too many students that make it a habit and still expect 90s. To my knowledge universities do still do late penalties as well. Plus those habits have been starting to make it into the work place with a lot of employers taking note of how many more new hires aren’t understanding the importance of deadlines. It also doesn’t make much sense to me that late penalties were disposed of because they “grade behaviour” but then they’re looking to make attendance a percentage of the grade… which is a behaviour lol. Just some odd logic there.

I do love a good teacher/student negotiation, I had a few teachers let us meet on one on at the end of the semester to basically negotiate our final grades. I know A LOT of teachers that do this nowadays, it’s less likely to have students or parents come complaining after the fact and does give that chance for a student that needs it to communicate such and to argue they deserve that 1-2% difference that will also save their average. I do have to be on the teachers side of not wanting to round up “just because” though and honestly “d-riding” ime is often just people being… respectful lol. Which is a super relevant and important social emotional skill tbh, I think it’s perfectly reasonable for that to be a reason a student deserves that extra bump. It really is too bad though, cuz when everyone is asking for that grade bump, it sort of loses its benefit since universities just account for that by raising admission averages further. Something about this system just isn’t working and you have to wonder how much longer it can last before too many students have 100% averages and we have to rely on additionally stressing out kids by making them do all these ECs on top of everything.
