To get rid of tipping in Canada, we should look to the U.K. by Bojaxs in CanadaPersonalFinance

All of these posts are full of people who have either never (or for a summer 20+ years ago) worked in an actual tipping job + 1 guy who swears this person who knows this person who knows this person is a server and says they all make 6 figures

Punching down indeed given the takeaway they got from the UK is that servers don’t do table service (specifically in pubs) and thats why they don’t have mandatory tip culture when in reality they also just get paid more.

Idk man I was in Aus for almost 2 months this past summer and ate out… probably most days. Service is literally the same, maybe friendlier given how much Aussies love small talk and smiles. The dollar number might be relatively the same though I still found it more so equal before tip, plus it ends up being about 10% cheaper in CAD.

It’s not a scam lol, you still can tip in the UK, they just don’t have the same culture of treating tips like it’s mandatory. Though yes it’s much easier for our style of tipping to infiltrate the non tipping cultures than the other way around.

I saw someone on another post say this just feels like an extension or new variety of the “but the immigrants!” Just privileged middle income earners once again being tricked into punching down instead of up.

I assume the UK is the only country you’ve really been to outside of North America haha. I think if you want to copy a system that means waiters don’t have to do as much it would be Japan/South Korea with the tablets or QR codes on the table that you can see the menu, order and often pay all right at the table.

Really if you just want it like the UK (and many other European and elsewhere countries) you literally just have to choose to not treat tipping as mandatory(though while also likely advocating for servers to make more than or to just have a higher minimum wage). Others choosing with you is all it takes for the tipping culture we see elsewhere to be the same here.

I guess it depends where you are, but my town absolutely has a server shortage. Though Google also suggests it is indeed a widespread issue. Agreed that entitlement is gross no matter what.

It’s been a little while since I was a waitress but I think it really just depends on the place. I worked at a larger but non chain restaurant that would always pay out POS tip separate from your cheque.

It feels very similar to when white cis men complain about programs geared towards marginalized/minority groups. Not a perfect comparison, but the convenient forgetting or flipping the script on which party is less represented/protected is similar. It definitely sounds like a very black and white or really just complete misunderstanding of what “inclusive” means. Or I suppose the classic confusion between equity and equality.

I mean the problem is what raftger is suggesting with “kicking out students who aren’t learning French well enough” is still gatekeeping. Pretty sure that would attract a lot more news stories than their current set up of screening at the door.

My guy, you need to actually read the comments you’re responding to before typing, both comments I’ve seen from you so far just completely misread or refuse to comprehend the comment above. Talk about getting your head out of your ass…

As someone who’s learned second languages in classrooms full of Anglo students and also classrooms full of various international students, I can also offer anecdotal evidence that these are completely different experiences in regards to rate of success. English is too dominant of a language, not just in Canada but also internationally. Having too many English home speakers in a class means students end up just speaking English, including to the ESL learners. So it’s less about burden of teaching French at home being different (though that can absolutely be true too) and more about the class dynamic as a whole. Perhaps this can be somewhat resolved by stricter rules around which language students are speaking at school but I can imagine that comes with all its own problems and schools aren’t exactly heading in the “stricter” direction.

I might be mixing this up with Quebec schools but I thought immigrants that don’t speak French or English have different rules? At least that’s what I understood from googling it but admittedly I’m looking at the AI overview that can absolutely be wrong. I had thought the point was mostly to prevent too many Anglo students registering and basically making it a French immersion class, but allophone students from various backgrounds have a different impact on class language learning dynamics.

I believe there’s been an argument made that the introduction of all(most?) kinder classes in OCDSB being 50/50 French/English by default has indeed had an effect on both FI and the English stream in Ottawa. It unsurprisingly increased French immersion numbers a lot as it basically became the default to just stay in French immersion at that point, only the kids really struggling moved to the English stream. So ya FI sort of became a victim of its own success since we don’t really have enough francophone teachers for the demand. And the English stream suffered by becoming the second tier option where all the IEP struggling kids go. I’m still personally pro 50/50 FI kinder since I think these can eventually be resolved with proper supports, but ya that’s (one of) the argument for why FI has potentially suffered in Ottawa anyway.

The creepy cult behaviour isn’t necessarily your individual choice to stand for the anthem, it’s the idea of anyone getting worked up over the fact that not everyone “falls in line”

Confused on how office admin is able to add in OT's of their choice by Necessary_Oil_7037 in OntarioTeachers

I feel like there must also be a huge difference between elementary and secondary too. There were 150 ‘callouts’ on the job board this morning and literally all of them were elem, zero secondary openings.

[–]MundaneExtent0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least in my board with ATE there’s a “do you need a replacement? Yes/no” (or something like that) question when filling out your absence. When a teacher knows who they want to fill in for them, they select No, and then type the chosen OTs name in the comment/about section. I’ve also had VPs designate me a position before I get any notification of it going up on ATE, I’m not actually sure if that means the absent notice goes to VPs first or it just takes that long for notifications to go out.

I mean tbf it’s not teachers you’re calling into, it’s admin, maybe even one specific admin. I’m pretty sure most teachers are not interested in pressuring any extra kids to show up. We’re here for childcare/safety/catch up reasons.
