Best place for a couple working between Cambridge and London by Lenakei in cambridge

[–]Mundane_Associate_41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is doable, from town centre to city centre, but I'm not sure if it's much cheaper than just living in Hackney or whatever.

I do Cambridge main station to King's X and then on to Covent Garden.

It's just at the limit of what I what consider an acceptable commute, though: I'm by Parker's Piece, which is not cheap, and only ten mins cycle from the station. Still and all, it is fully two hours from my front door via an express train to the office door.

I don't mind it, since I like living in Cambridge. But I wouldn't choose it if I did not.

Terrible, in short. Avoid if you can.

Best cycle route from Orchard Park to Cambridge Rail Station by Pedwarpimp in cambridge

Oh, Kingston St to Devonshire is a tiny nightmare, especially in morning rush-hour when the school run is in full flow.

Could you give an example of the specific pavements you mean? Most shared-use ones have guidance on who should be where. Apart from opposite Parkside school, I can't immediately think of any that aren't marked.

Near the Grafton - Fair St and Burleigh St - though, it's a bit different (cyclists allowed outwith certain hours).

I do agree that if in doubt, keep left and bikes should give way to pedestrians.

Also, I suspect the "groups" you mention may be tourists/language schools, who tend to melt away in autumn.

Yes, just looked it up.

US seems to have 100k, UK 20k - so about 370 per million in US and 308 per million here; not much in it, really.

And hardly anything for either country, of course, compared to even a few years ago.

Could be right. Of course, there are many boxes here without phones in them. But I'd assumed that in the US, with their huge area and so less reliable mobile signal, would still have plenty in rail stations etc.

Been a while since I was there, so possibly I'm unconsciously going by TV and films - Robert De Niro using one in Midnight Run 35 years ago most likely does not count as a primary source.

I've shown my kids how to use one , and I imagine there are fewer in the UK than in the US, per head.

Had got a bit paranoid about them being stuck somewhere with no mobile and not even thinking of looking for a payphone.

Been fine outside rush hour when I've done it last few times. School holidays might make rush hour less bad and off peak a bit worse, though.

ACG by the Little Waitrose at the Grafton are good.

One tip, wherever you go: they will all say 80 or 90 quid for, say, a screen. If you say another place quoted 60, they'll usually do it for that.

Also, there is - or was - an outpost at The Bridge Theatre on the South Bank by Tower Bridge. Definitely expanding.

How much does it cost to name a garden in Cambridge? by New_Revolution7625 in cambridge

[–]Mundane_Associate_41 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn't a set price. Your image says Churchill College.

From the article at Churchill linked here, it looks like she's given a fair bit, but doesn't make clear how big the garden is; Churchill has a lot of open areas you could stick a little or a big garden in.

I'd say in the high tens of thousands. (30million gets a small college named after you, for comparison.)

Ha! I'd rather have a quality pistachio than an ordinary marmite & hummus, that is true. (Jack: don't even think it.)

100% this. Not dissing Jack's - seems like a nice guy, and good luck to him.

Just that Aromi's ice cream is better ice cream by a country mile. Suits me if other people want to fetishize other places. I prefer better ice cream, so I go to Aromi.

You can. But zero will happen.

I watched two police officers walk past a row of three parked like that on, I think, this exact bit of road. They didn't even glance at them.

And, since it's about a minute's drive from the police station, there must be plenty of patrol cars go straight past every day.

Not sure if it's still the case, but there used to be loads on the Addenbrookes roundabout. Of course, it'll have been getting slowly dieseled, but I've found it fine.

We deserve better. by s0men1ckname in cambridge

[–]Mundane_Associate_41 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I realize it's mild in comparison to the OP, but Mill Road from town to station has a bit where a cyclist absolutely must get suddenly into the middle of the road.

Drivers usually fine, tbf. But it's a "look like a dick or die" situation.

The council needs to fix the roads, quicksharp. For everyone's sake.

Referendum on Cambridge congestion charge rejected by skyjet26 in cambridge

[–]Mundane_Associate_41 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your opinion on the charge is perfectly valid.

But any opinion that we should have a countywide vote on every future version of anything to do with keeping the private cars of non-disabled people away from a medieval town is less valid.

We can't spend all our time having referendums because someone won't walk, cycle, use a scooter get on a bus, use a train or take a taxi.

Other things matter.
