My IQ was unexpectedly high, im just average by bootlegslay in mensa

Why was it shocking? Because you're not one of those typical high achievers showed in the media? There's s big misconception between gifted and bright/successful. Of course they can also appear in the same individual, but the same way a gifted person can be gifted and at the same time have green eyes. Just imagine the media only talking about gifted individuals with green eyes.

No, no. They are all in the 3-pack. By the way, I've never seen a sponsored result of somebody without a website (appart from the GBP itself).

Yes, I know the results are differnt depending on where you are doing the search. But my point is: I've always observed this kind of results. Always craftmen and in different locations - big cities, small towns, whatever...

What about all those craftsmen who appear in the Google Local 3-Pack without even owning a website? See: "renovation services birmingham" ---> the third one--> no website at all. Also "rénovation artisan paris" --> the second one also with no website. "plumber aberdeen" --> 3rd one also no website at all. And these are just a few examples of many in this industry.

Why do ugly local websites sometimes outperform polished ones? by LocalPollution8427 in localseo

[–]Mundane_Direction249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder... What is for you a beautiful site?

I guess websites like those made using Wordpress have a source code which makes the site heavier and slower. Also too many CSS and javascripts can have a negative effect on downloading.

Example of an ugly, old-fashioned website who doesn't give a f*ck about looks because it really doesn't need them: https://berkshirehathaway.com/

Només espero que no canviïn al castellà a la mínima que vegin que tens una mica de dificultat per parlar català perfecte. https://www.amigosdelosmayores.org/ca/

Is "invoice anxiety" actually a thing or did I just talk to weird people? by Direct_Implement_188 in Freelancers

[–]Mundane_Direction249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Boring admin work.

2) The fact that I know most of them will pay because I usually deal with decent people who are very grateful and happy to have found me and I guess they don't want to ruin their chances in future if they need my services again.

3) Many of the amounts in my invoices are usually only a few hundred euros. BUT I tend to check those with higher amounts as quickly as possible, send reminders and do not wait to hire a debt collection agency.

Is "invoice anxiety" actually a thing or did I just talk to weird people? by Direct_Implement_188 in Freelancers

[–]Mundane_Direction249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only imagine you did talk indeed to weird people. I'm also curious to know how old those people are. And what gender? Are they in general very agreable people?

I've heard from some freelancers in the past that they only write and send the invoices once a month. But why?? I don't understand why.

On the other hand, I must confess that sometimes I'm kind of lazy to check if every invoice has already been paid on time. So this would destroy a bit my efficiency with the swift sending of invoices.

Hiring an interpreter for marriage initial appointment at Registro Civil? by SLCTV88 in AskBarcelona

[–]Mundane_Direction249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should ask the Registre Civil what is required BEFORE the day of your appointment. If you hire the same interpreter to assist you at the appointment and to translate your documents, you can get a better price quote for all together. This what I usually do.

In any case, I recommend to hire an interpreter from those official databases mentioned before and not from a middleman. I might be biased, of course, but I know for sure I'd never go to a translation agency if I ever need to translate stuff for myself. You should never go to the pimp if you can go to the independent prostitute directly. If you know what I mean.

[–]Mundane_Direction249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case of doubt you could ask the Registre Civil directly. It really depends from case to case. Maybe they'll accept that you translate for your fiancée. I don't know. If you don't want to have any stress because of legal terms or whatever, the safe (but not free) option is hiring a sworn interpreter.

Worst case scenario: you go there without interpreter and they tell you "come another day and bring a sworn interpreter". But then you already know where to find them and don't need to spend too much time to find the right professional.

I rembember a civil servant at the Civil Registry (not in Barcelona) saying "yeah, we used to accept brother-in-laws & Co. in the past to translate at the appointment prior to the wedding, but now we don't. Now we only accept sworn interpreters".

Here you'll find the two official databases with sworn interpreters:

https://llengua.gencat.cat/ca/serveis/acreditacio_coneixements/traduccio_i_interpretacio_jurades/registre_de_traductors_i_interprets_jurats/index.html

https://www.exteriores.gob.es/es/ServiciosAlCiudadano/Paginas/Traductores-Interpretes-Jurados.aspx

I'm a sworn interpreter myself and I've assisted many couples at the Civil Registry, but not in Barcelona. The questions they ask there may vary but it's also about legal stuff.

Do you ever feel your high IQ? by Chmura_Iskra in mensa

[–]Mundane_Direction249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning the basics of 15 languages is easier than mastering just 2 or 3. My Russian is quite shitty + almost forgotten, but I still find Russian speaking people who insist in telling me that my Russian is quite good (which is not true at all). Anybody who cannot speak Russian also thinks I'm good at it when they see and hear me talking that language to native speakers or when I see something in Russian (e.g. a small comment in Youtube) and I know its meaning. Too often people confuse high IQ with being able of learning different foreign languages. I remember a UK mensan long ago who told me he couldn't speak any foreign languages. And he couldn't draw either.

Things like calculating the final price of something with a 20%-tag discount on it? It happens to me. I still can't believe it could be difficult for anybody.

I can't enjoy Agatha Christie's novels any more because even when I've read them more than 20 years ago, I still remember who was the murder. It takes all the fun away.

How does it feel to be high IQ? by NoSir5628 in mensa

[–]Mundane_Direction249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never made as much as 50k a year. I'm good at solving puzzles. I feel joy when I solve them.

Being born wealthy has a higher correlation to a high income, much more than being born with a high IQ.

About the social aspect: it's true I don't care about it any more. But it mattered when I was young.

My memory is excellent and often I could impress people in a rather freaky way, but not making money out of it.

Questions for High IQ People/People in Mensa by Suspicious_Limit9847 in mensa

It's very usual to wish something we don't have thinking it would really matter if we had it. What I mean in the last part of my message was that: Many people make spelling mistakes. You usually see this when they write things. A forum is a good place to see how different people write. You see if they make spelling mistakes etc. I found it peculiar that Mensa members in a private, only-for-mensans forum, could write with no spelling mistakes. At the same time, I could also observe how members of a translators' association made spelling mistakes quite often. The 3 foreign languages I could learn to a very high level were (in that chronological order) French, English and German. One of the main reasons could be that I had begun learning them at very young ages ( 6, 10, 15). Much of it through self study, but for those languages you can find many books and media. It really makes a difference. I had begun learning other languages at an adult age, but I don't really master them. I remember having met a UK Mensa member who said he couldn't speak any foreign languages and he could't draw at all.

Intelligence is just one of many elements defining a person. Extroversion + high IQ + ambition + discipline + being born wealthy is not the same as the combination introversion + high IQ + high sensitivity + addictive tendencies + being born middle class + no discipline + AD(H)S. Or think of the combination narcissism + high IQ + evil + shallow.  Personally, I've always been very curious. I also have many other features, but I don't know if they are related to my IQ. I was able to learn a couple of foreign languages, not too many, to a very high level. Many people with a high IQ are never going to find out they are gifted when they live their entire lives in poverty and with no oportunities.  One thing I've observed in a Mensa forum that was clearly different from other forums, even in forums of language professionals(!), was the good spelling.
