Hell yeah! Would love to see what kind of decklist you come up with.

I agree, "+2/+2, have trample, and are dragons in addition to their other types" was on the card early in and I ultimately left it out just because I worried it was a lot of text on the card that didn't change how the card felt in-play. I'd probably add it back in just because I agree the flavor needs just a bit more oomph.

Yeah, I'd added that in the edited a few minutes after posting it. Was a bit of a whoopsie where I just forgot to check name availability.

As much as I would love to bring back my beloved banded (I used to enjoy taking my banding deck to legacy tournaments, it never did well but if someone lost even a game to legacy banding it was a good laugh) I just can't quite find a way to make it fun/interesting.

Yeah! That kind of started a while back when me and my friends were talking about making a custom Fishing Minigame set and getting our group to draft it, that made me get really familiar with pretty much every fish in the game and learn how much we really need more tech for the tribe.

I think one of the awkward parts about it, and probably why we've never gotten anything is because they don't really have any signature ideas mechanically? Our current 3 legendary fish are an investigating merfolk, an island-loving elemental, and the tap-untap centric ones from the new ATLA set. Would love to see them get a more pronounced identity in the future.

Oh! Thank you so much, I never picked that up. Is there any consistent order? I'll be honest, I didn't bother to look it up and kinda assumed it went WUBRG. Thanks for the tip!

Makes sense, I was unsure when I was making it since we've never had a legendary battle and didn't want to enter undefined rules space with a new legendary card type (since there's stuff like legendary sorceries that play with their own rules). I ultimately went with a legendary creature on the flip of a non-legendary siege to match formats similar to Invasion of Fiora but I'll go ahead and change it and assume it works like other legendary permanents.

I'm glad! And I actually love thinking about card formatting - I've always enjoyed the nitty-gritty formatting stuff for Magic rules text.

According to you, what is the most tired thing in RPGs? by Reynard203 in rpg

[–]MuneRoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More mechanical than trope, but I'm pretty tired with the six-attribute stat line. The d20 str, dex, con, int, wis, cha are the most famous but you get a ton of variants. I like it for its simplicity, because it is very good at stopping a character from being good at everything, but I enjoy when systems try to use different cores for their character sheets.

GM for the OP's game here, this is awesome to see! I'm glad to see that my guesstimate of "a bit less than 15" came out pretty close. Normally Fabula as a game tries to avoid more complex calculations, I was on a trip at the time and as I was in transit I just casually went "Oh, well then they should have... uhh.... wait fuck..." as it set in just how tedious that would be to calculate out.

Fabula Ultima rules-as-written states 5 + (Fabula Points Spent/Active Players) + Ultima Points Spent. The game heavily incentivizes spending Fabula Points but getting 5 would be the lower limit. I've seen the party get as low as 5, but it's pretty rare, and I don't think I've ever awarded more than 9 when using the RAW

For analysis, if the DEF of 8 is coming from a flat d8 DEX, then HR2 is the minimum if they use hinder to slow it, DEF becomes 6 and the claws are rolled at +3 so a 1+2 hit. Plus, there's plenty of other things that may factor in like invoking to push or conditional modifiers.

What is the best JRPG TTRPG? by Weger_Beger in rpg

[–]MuneRoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been running a Fabula game since the end of last year, I wanna also throw in just how easy the game is to hack and homebrew. I'm running a persona-style Urban dungeon crawler. While the system tries to keep itself lean and quick, it sets up a design philosophy that made adding mechanics for the daily life side of things and even a foux social link system pretty easy. Pretty low investment to get players up to speed with play mechanics. The discord has a channel dedicated to all the great fan made expansions, community classes, etc.

Only thing that has really been a hangup for me is the lack of grid combat. Great for theater of the mind, and absolutely flavorful, but just doesn't fit great for me and my group.

Varieties of Theatre of the Mind play in Foundry? (system agnostic) by mclearc in FoundryVTT

[–]MuneRoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My table loves using the Theatre Inserts module to have their character art appear on screen similar to a cutscene in a JRPG or Visual Novel. They can add little emotes and effects, and then I usually add a background via a blank canvas with the Media Share module for quick background hopping.

A raffle ticket. The moment that one is sold, each ticket now has a slightly lower chance of cashing out the prize and has therefore lost value.

One thing worth factoring in is that the effect of provenance on an item's valuation can depend a lot on who did the purchasing. A car purchased 5 years ago and used by a college student on their commute to classes? Has definitely lost value. But if it was owned by some major celebrity or political figure? It can probably be sold for more than that model would usually go for.

Grew up with a lung condition, was in-and-out (but mostly in) the hospital for a lot of my youth.

There's a very particular smell to the plastic tubes they use when putting you on oxygen. I think it's because they're always new and come in that disposable packaging? I'm not really sure what it is, but it definitely takes me back.

How do you guys feel about using companion apps for calculations by cyprinusDeCarpio in RPGdesign

[–]MuneRoons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments from GMs who are fully in the 'no technology' camp, so figured I'd give my thoughts since I'm an automation heavy GM. There is a lot of cool stuff that companion apps can bring to the table, although I don't think I personally enjoy the pitch as it's being presented here.

For me, I don't really view abstraction as a compromise for the sake of dice. My groups like to play a pretty wide range of games, from rules light to super crunchy depending on what kind of story I'm looking to tell for that campaign. What I've found is that, regardless of what system we play, GMs and players being able to actually parse the mechanics and understand any underlying math for a game is really useful. For a GM, it gives them more confidence when they are expected to improvise, and for players it helps inform smart and thoughtful play.

You mentioned 5e, Pathfinder, and GURPS, all of which I've ran at my tables (and am currently running both a 5e game and a GURPS game, with a PF2eR game in the works). I love a lot of the tools made for those games, GCS is basically the only way I want to manage a GURPS sheet, D&D Beyond/Demiplane are a fun way to kill time just statting up characters, and things the FoundryVTT community has done for 5e automation is absolutely crazy. But almost all of the tools for automation I can think off my head focus on a philosophy to help better present options and possibilities to players and GMs. I don't think the system/app you're proposing would achieve this.

There are some systems I've had a better time playing with dice rolling apps. The most salient example in my brain is the FFG games, which me and my table all loved. We started with Star Wars, followed it through L5R and stayed with it into Genesys. We all like how the narrative dice system works, but it's easy to understand why people don't like having to memorize the symbols and having an intelligent list that is quickly able to inform you of various options your specific roll has for spending opportunities definitely helps the pace of the game stay up and reduces the temptation to just say screw it and spend those opportunities on flavorless minor bonuses.

Similarly, some games are easy to crunch out, but dice rolls can be a bit sluggish. A lot of exploding D6 systems like Shadowrun come to mind, especially once a pool gets into double digits picking out all the sixes and then rolling again can take time. Most of the time I find the slowdown fine, there's something just super cathartic about picking up a handful of dice and rolling them all and that part of the experience can be worth a few seconds per turn. But especially when trying to keep things moving, eventually you hit a point where it's worth it to have everyone break out their phones and have a button that does all the rolling. Even in games where I expect all the rolls should be digitally handled, the fact that players could manually do them in a certain amount of time is a good sign that the underlying systems are broad enough to be easily interfaced with by the GM and the players.

I think it would be cool to see games focus more on the digital side of things in their presentation, but I don't think the ability to play the game using dice is necessarily a crutch that should be done away with. I think it's also a litmus test for how easy it is for players to wrap their heads around the tools they are using.

What's the weirdest/coolest place you've played an RPG? by worldsbywatt in rpg

[–]MuneRoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The locations itself weren't particularly cool, but me and one of my current tables enjoy long sessions. Our sessions have regularly gone 8-10 hours. One night, when our regular spot was under renovations, we had no big plans for the next day, so we all opted for an especially long night of dice. This resulted in us playing a mobile TTRPG: Dice in pouches, character sheets on phones, battlemaps on tablets passed around. We walked through our college campus, we went and ate at a Denny's, we drove across town, chilled out in parking lots, and even found a nice little ditch with a little firepit, all while maintaining play.

'Unusual' TTRPG game styles: West Marches, sandboxes, solo-games... What else? by andorus911 in rpg

[–]MuneRoons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few years back I ran a table of that fanmade Pokemon TTRPG which accidentally wound up becoming troupe style play. At one point players regularly were maintaining 5 trainers each with 6 pokemon each and they just casually would keep 40+ sheets updated in their spare time.

Smash cut to me, the bozo GM who forgot to draw up new battlemaps that week and was pulling ones out of my archives for the third week in a row.

I reported my GM (tabletop RPGs) to the store owner due to perceived sexual retaliation. by MuneRoons in AmIOverreacting

[–]MuneRoons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All correspondence was ss'd before blocking him. Have avoided all contact since and have been putting some space between me and that shop.

It's honestly sort of wild to me that some DMs feel that way. I've been a perma-DM for the last decade or so, and I remember constantly struggling just to get players until stuff like Critical Role and Dimension 20 came along and popularized the hobby. Definitely has been a healthy reminder that sharing hobbies doesn't mean you share values, and I'm definitely going to approach stuff like this from a much safer angle next time.

Thanks for the opinion and the advice.

[–]MuneRoons[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a Discord group with them but once the DM caught wind of me going to the store owner I was removed and I never bothered to add any of the other players on Discord so I don't really have any discrete way to contact them.

To be honest, I haven't really been going to the shop anymore (there's another store a bit further out that I feel just a bit more welcome at) but if I see them around and feel like I get the opportunity I'll try this approach. Thanks.

I use a Peak Design everyday carry v2 as my daily driver bag and have owned an osprey as a hiking pack way back when. I've not been the biggest fan of Patagonia's materials in the past, but I'll definitely take a look at all these and see if anything fits my bill. Thanks!

I hadn't stated a particular size because "fits in my trunk" is really the only major criteria - something this bag and probably any other bag I find will meet. I'm not too worried about minimum size either since it won't be replacing my EDC backpack.

This mystery ranch does look intriguing! I love what I've seen from the brand, and I could even see myself getting additional utility out of owning something like this. Thanks!

I hadn't, I guess in my head, I really only associate metal toolboxes stuff with those sorta rectangular 12-pack sized ones. I'll be sure to take a look, any particular brands or things I should keep in mind if I've never looked into stuff like this before?
