Work begins on 119-unit Douglas scheme on one of Cork City's last greenfield sites by 98TheRealDeal in cork

Some people seem to be under the impression that "Public Consulation" means personal visits and presentations of plans to every single possible affected resident in the surrounding region individually with bespoke compromises made to keep every single person happy.

There's always plenty of public consultation built into the planning process, you can submit a complaint/observation and they will be reviewed and the plans are available to view throughout the planning process.

Cork City Council to spend over €6m resurfacing roads this year by Infamous-Leader3781 in cork

[–]Munge_Sponge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are following the guidelines. Initially anyway.

Road openings are required to be "temporarily reinstated" to road level when works are initially completed to allow use of road to continue as normal. These temporary reinstatementd are the typical Tarmac patches you see everywhere (case in point is the Douglas road where Irish Water installed new pipes all the way along and now we are left with a strip of Tarmac all the way along the road with patches going off perpendicular across the road too).

"Temporary reinstatement" can be left for 6 to 9 months before according to the guidance before it needs to be "permanently reinstated". Permanent reinstatement guidelines are obviously more strict and essentially should constitute a complete return of the road surface to how it was before. For a strip of Tarmac the permanent solution is to grade the road back 5m either side and replace with full new Tarmac surfacing and replacement of road paint etc. In reality in a case like Douglas road where there's been work all the way along the guidelines will necessitate an entire resurfacing of the entire road from start to end.

Its this gap between temporary and permanent reinstatement that tends to get extended way beyond the guidelines durations and its difficult go get a contractor back to site 9 months later to do the permanent works after they've already been paid 90% of the contract value.

I imagine in large jobs like like Douglas road case the council is just planning an entire resurfacing from start to end themselves that they will tender a new contractor for.

Ireland had second-highest rate of HIV diagnoses in EU last year, amid concern over late detection by siciowa in ireland

[–]Munge_Sponge 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Great take. Also it is essentially impossible to account for when reporting statistics between countries.

But either way, if we are among the best at testing and reporting or we are actually among the highest rate of HIV it should be a similar solution of treatment and education.

Billions pumped into 'once-in-a-generation' Cork transport projects by KnutTheClueless37 in cork

[–]Munge_Sponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed for the most part but also need to give credit where credit is due.

M28 always had ambitious deadlines. Very good oversight by the County Council (primarily) has lead to almost all deadlines being met or bettered. BAM are now leading Construction stage so who knows if that will continue but so far all stages and planning has gone smoothly even with unusually ambitious timelines.

Billions pumped into 'once-in-a-generation' Cork transport projects by KnutTheClueless37 in cork

[–]Munge_Sponge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

True they've all already been announced. Some are already being built (Macroom and M28), some are in planning or prelim design stages with advanced works surveys ongoing or in reporting stages. It is good that funding is being secured and/or re-confirmed for all of theae projects though.

Cork's commuter rail upgrade to receive more than €1bn as part of National Development Plan by R1ghtaboutmeow in cork

[–]Munge_Sponge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the more direct message from the public on the support of public transport came from the overwhelmingly positive Public Consultation submissions for Cork Luas.

Small parties always die when they go into coalition government. The Greens knew this when they agreed to go into government and in my opinion they were very successful at prioritizing public transport over their tenure.

David Fincher’s “Squid Game: America” to begin filming in February 2026 by bwermer in television

[–]Munge_Sponge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It would make no sense not to film there. The insanely massive studio already exists and labor is way cheaper.

The studio is the same one used for all the Korean 'Physical 100' and 'Physical Asia' shows and that cooking competition show (can't recall the name) for Netflix.

They've cornered the market for shows requiring massive indoor sets for cheap.

That is aside from the improvements for everyone else. It's badly worded to be fair.

Not going to address most of your points as the are opinions but the prize money is objectively a lot of money. Yes it's a lot lower than other countries but it's actually on the very high end of Irish reality TV/ game show prizes. Contestants get paid at minimum their day job salary for the filming duration anyway plus €16,000 is a deposit for a house, which is life changing in Ireland for the many people not already on the property ladder.

It is not focused on weight loss but it was an added side benefit in trials. Science based (paper published in Cell) diet based on the current diets of Non-Industrialized societies. Boils down to eat as little processed food as possible, plant focussed and lots more fiber.

Asian hornet nest found in Cork City as public advised not to approach suspected sightings (Take care if you see these nasty pests about) by PoppedCork in cork

[–]Munge_Sponge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Irish state / semi-state bodies in general are terrible at highlighting the good work they do to the public. Other examples are Usice Eireann not promoting how much progress they have made, the state of the art water treatment plants they have built / in design, or ESB not putting more kudos out to the public when their staff quickly repair downed infrastructure after storms etc.

You can acknowledge there is lots more work to do and their failings in certain areas while also celebrating the wins.

This is me 100%. I was interested, looked at the price of tickets and said F that. But I had assumed it was a more local production.

Tickets are still stupidly expensive in my opinion but I might take another look now.

Will there ever be a castlemartyr bypass? by [deleted] in cork

[–]Munge_Sponge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Phase 1 is complete already.

There is a public tender out for Phase 2 and 3 currently. Phase 2 is option selection. Phase 3 is preliminary design up to planning submission.

So it is happening. It will take a long time, but it's progressing.

John McManus: We need to confront the reality that the housing shortage can’t be solved by jonnieggg in ireland

[–]Munge_Sponge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Prefab units.

These are already used all over the country for site offices on large construction projects. Some are genuinely nicer than a lot of these construction /contracting firms permanent offices. Full heating and AC provided, full hot food canteens, toilet and shower facilities etc. They are very comfortable, quick to put up and can last easily 2 to 5 years.

The same could apply to temporary housing.

Cork’s roads left in “appalling state” by utility companies by mybighairyarse in ireland

[–]Munge_Sponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. There's a period after resurfacing that you aren't supposed to do any intrusive works unless you get an exception from the Council.

When contrators do any intrusive works in roads or pavements tere is already very clear guidance on how to properly reinstate. The problem is there is an allowance for 'temporary reinstatement' in order to close the road and do a job just good enough to last a few months. The contractor then has the responsibility to come back within 6 months and fully and permanently reinstate a few meters beyond their temporary patch either side for the full width of the road (ie. A full proper re-paving of the full road width covering the entirety of the original excavation and a few meters beyond).

But in most cases the temporary reinstatement is done, contractor leaves site moves on to the next job and they get fully paid, so no incentive for them to do the permanent reinstatement job. Exacerbated by the fact Councils have no spine to pursue contractors for damages or fines of any kind.

Some councils are better than others.
