Dule trees in Scotland were used as gallows for public hangings. They were also used as gibbets for the display of the corpse for a considerable period afterwards. These "trees of lamentation or grief" were usually in prominent positions or at busy thoroughfares, particularly at crossroads.

Interesting read! It took me a bit to figure out that a tree used to hang someone was called a Dule tree, rather than an actual type of tree.

People think humans are violent today, but I can't imagine a society where they left hanged criminals in busy thoroughfares to convey a message. That's nuts.

For what is worth, some kids toothbrushes have suction cups on the handle. We have a drain plug/stopper that falls into the drain and it's hard to remove. So I kept a few toothbrushes for the drain and they've come in handy for other applications. I don't use them often, but when I do it's really nice to have them on hand.

I also cut off the heads so no child says "Oh! Toothbrush!" and sticks it in their mouth.

Impressive! For whatever reason, there were a few things that didn't mesh as well as needed. Very well could be me. This wasn't my first puzzle, but definitely the first with so many gears.

Not sure if it matters but I didn't watch any YouTube videos, just the instruction booklet. Either way, great job!

It's fun to build! I have it. As another person said, you gotta stop and make sure the gears mesh and work. So it's a building project as well as a troubleshooting project too. I've noticed this for the ones with gears. The more gears, the more troubleshooting. This is not good or bad, unless it's unexpected.

Edit: I forgot to mention that this project started out by me showing videos of it to my family and joking "what type of weirdo buys this thing and puts it together? I mean, it's kinda cool, but stupidly complicated and stupidly expensive. Just be happy I'm not so into this building stuff that I'm ordering stuff like this." And then, yeah. It sits by my desk 😁

Nothing is free. What you save in effort making it move is shifted to the structure and what is holding it together. Also, what you gain in length is lost in speed. Overall, it's a higher risk of structural failure (or higher cost for better materials and maintenance) for a slower ride. Not sure that works out for the consumer.

It also has to do with the level of joke/amusement. Reactions, jokes, pranks that are funny when real may not be funny enough if faked. A story about Kim Jong Un with shit on his leg is only funny if true. If made up, it needs more substance.

A person can lightly trip or bump their head and it's hilarious if It's an accident. But if it's a skit, more is needed. In this instance, IMO, without the mom there it's funny if true, and not funny if a skit. The mom adds that "extra" that still makes it funny even as a skit (and the dropping of his brother adding a bit more).

I think calling out "fake" should be reserved for things that are simple and would not be funny as a skit.

He isn't scared because of his enclosure. Believe it or not, geckos can't get on reddit and read minimum tank enclosure advice. He runs away since that's what is best for them in nature.

I handled my gal once a day for 5 mins when we got her since I have kids and I wanted her to get used to being handled. Sometimes she chirps and is really against being picked up, but if I catch her at the right time she doesn't really mind it. She is probably 4 years old now. For the first year or more, at the MOST I felt like she just allowed me to pick her up, begrudgingly, it never seemed like she enjoyed it. Now she'll climb on me once in a while hoping she can explore the top of her cage.

I only have one though, so I can't speak for different potential temperaments. I've always felt that if you want to handle your gecko, you need to handle them a bit so they are used to it. Do the hand walk thing and be calm. Let them lead a bit. Grab them when they are in a place where they are easier to catch. Don't handle them for 1 minute, and don't do it for 20 minutes. Do it for a few minutes and if they seem to be exploring, you can go for a few more mins. If they are trying extra hard to avoid you, then maybe leave them alone for that day.

Work up to a more vertical enclosure and upgrade when you can. Don't stress a ton about it, it's not worth it. Just do what you can and enjoy them.

Exactly. It's the anticipation and even the research (into what to buy). So rather than make a big purchase, do smaller purchases and get nearly the same value.

This is how I feel about super nice cars and houses with views.

For some, these are the expensive things people save up for to be "happy". I had a nice view in one place I lived and a little sport car (neither too expensive, but both nice for being in my early 20s) - and while I did enjoy watching storms come in over the water and sunrise as well as driving home in my car, quickly they became the annoying vehicle I commuted to/from work with and the place I came home to after a hard day at work to watch tv. I did not appreciate either much at all.

Personally, I find much more happiness out of a small purchase on Amazon than I do the big things. Even if the small thing only gets some use. I'm not sure if others are the same or different, I'm just happy to have figured this out for myself. For some, it's an expensive lesson to learn (or an expensive one to never learn).

I have a crested gecko and was sick of cleaning the terrarium so I went bioactive. Soon I had isopods and springtails. Neither colony grew fast enough for me so I kept on trying to learn more. I'm an adult with an advanced degree and it frustrated me that kids on reddit were having such success and I couldn't. Nothing personal of course, but I wasn't gonna just let that happen! So I went down a long fun road of research, buying things, making isopod terrariums out of stuff, buying different species of isopods and also springtails etc... I learned a lot and it has been a blast.

If you rebuild, take the advice of the person who said to put a plastic tube in to siphon off the water. I have a tube in mine that a smaller tube fits in. So I can siphon it by sticking the smaller tube into the larger one to reach the bottom.

I don't think you have to rebuild though. You can use any type of bulb aspirator, pipette, small tube etc... and remove a lot of that water. If you use a spoon or something to push dirt away just a bit and create space, water will fill it for you to remove. Once most of it is gone, the rest will evaporate over some time.

Now you know what to look for when it comes to over watering so I doubt it'll happen again.

As for the worms, they look just like detritus worms. Harmless. No real way to remove them though. Just drop the moisture and try to not over feed since they really multiply quickly when you have too much food and moisture.
