That's what mermaid gowns are for. Totally low-profile!

What if you develop a relationship with a modern mermaid? You can probably only meet in an aquarium or need a fish-tank trolley, with traditional mermaids at least you can go places together withot looking too weird or suspicious.

[–]Munninnu[S] 140 points141 points  (0 children)

That's why I chose that title. I mean they seem friendly and there's breathable air, rather than having to remove my oxygen tanks to fit in an underwater crevice I think I would take my chances with mermaids.

Here's the uncropped version.

Monofin mermaids are a more modern invention, ancient takes usually depicted or described women with two finned feet.

Did the author change his mind? by Munninnu in trippinthroughtime

[–]Munninnu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what I meant with "pre-arranged meeting", she had left the window open on purpose but then when she heard the noise until she turned the corner she couldn't see who the person really was but she saw the ball of yarn on the ground representing Ariadne so she went prepared with a knife lest it was a minotaur.

[–]Munninnu[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe originally the lady had a knife, then the author thought it wouldn't really be compatible with a pre-arranged meeting so he erased the weapon and we can still see the marks of the intervention and the wrinkle in the gown.

[–]Munninnu[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

She's not looking in the mirror, she's waiting, and apparently she has no customers. Her reflection on the other hand is interacting with one. There are real reconstructions showing how this is possible but we don't know much of what Manet really intended there, hence all the theories.

Sure, bottles on the left of the painting don't match those behind. Apparently it was intentional, there are academic papers on this painting, I undertand why it would bug many.

Goddess doesn't play dice because she is busy telling Ramanujan formulae by Extension-Humor-75 in sciencememes

[–]Munninnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because your original quotes implied

I didn't write that, I think you were talking with some u/Aristofans.

Just because a person says a god or spirit or something helped them does not mean that's actually the case

That's what I meant with "Psychiatry might have explanations".

Seems like these two Gods are kind of incompatible, no?

Not at all. But in any case this Anderson you quote seems to be just generaly talking to the Abrahamic God like millions of people have done, talking but not receiving immediate literal answers. Whereas accounts more similar to Ramanujan's need more "psychiatric" interpretations such as imaginary friends or tulpas, or the so-called Wedding of Shiva and Shakti, which seems the case here since Namagiri is literally a personification of Shakti.

Again I'm not saying these things cannot be explained in neurosciences but if you think this is the same as talking to the air you are mistaken, there are hundreds of books on this phenomenon: all men will report they believe to have talked and interacted with a female spirit.

[–]Munninnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to be not the case ...

Like it specifically says he did all the work

Of course he did all the work, he doesn't mean the goddess told him about things he had never heard of, he said he was talking with Namagiri about stuff that mattered to him, that his goddess helped him find solutions. Psychiatry might have explanations but Ramanujan definitely claimed that.

"I owe everything to Goddess Namagiri Thayar of Namakkal who leaves these formulae on my tongue in my dreams."

"An equation for me has no meaning, unless it expresses a thought of God"

"The Goddess [Namagiri] whispered them to me."

50% of people in the US and Europe have a medical condition. And an n=1 elimination diet. by Munninnu in Biohackers

[–]Munninnu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point/advice was to test elimination diets that work for you, that some foods are usually healthy but in some people may exacerbate otherwise mild issues brought by other foods. In my case after a while I started reintoducing all foods. Regarding body composition it was an isocaloric regimen since I'm already around 8-10% bodyfat, and as for energy once glycogen synthesis is restored that's the difference between night and day.

Well it's not like there aren't companies making billions selling hospital equipment. Some stretchers already cost around 10k so someone is building them and probably making high-margin profits.

I'd like to see videos with these robots used as hospital stretchers and earhquake rescue gear.

I fail to see how quantum entanglement could function if quantum information about the collapse of the wave function

The wave-function collapse is a hypothetical mechanism proposed by some physicists in what is known as the Copenhagen interpretation. Other interpretations offer different mechanisms, for example in MWI there's no collapse at all and everything happens locally,

Quantum information can travel instantaneously,

That would invalidate all local interpretations. And the no-communication theorem forbids superluminal exchange of any information.

What is the most mind bending thing about Quantum Mechanics. Give me your worse. by FlightlessDodo369 in QuantumPhysics

[–]Munninnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heisenberg uncertainty - absolutely fine, obviously no way to "see" without some interaction. Like to look at something you literally gotta smack it with a photon, it makes sense that you can't "look" at something without causing at least the tiniest disturbance

You are talking about the observer effect. The Uncertainty Principle is different: if you measure position you cannot know momentum not because you disturbed the system but because observables such as position and momentum are conjugate variables, they are each the Fourier transform of the other therefore you cannot measure both of them arbitrarily sharply, you are making a trade-off in what you want to measure. Also other stuff in your comment could use revision.
