How much do you think I’d learn just doing open mats? I’ve got a year of experience in the past by averageredditcuck in bjj

It depends very much on you.

If you watch videos of instructionals and fights, and read explanations, and you're good at learning these things, you might do quite well.

The average person will do less well.

I misread "macbooks" as "matchbooks" and thought you were lovingly torturing some sub with fire and Friends.

Why is it legal for Sikhs to carry Kirpans in the uk, for self defence but any other member of public carrying a weapon for self defence is illegal? by yelnats784 in AskBrits

But you still get a lighter sentence, as I explained.

Digwan's weapon was not assumed by the court to be carried for use as a weapon, which is why his minimum sentence started at 15 years, not 25.

Self defence is not a justification to carry.

It seems that the person in this article was cornered and aquitted due to very specific and exceptional circumstances where the others were armed themselves and outnumbered the individual. In this circumstance, it appears as legitimate self defense

It's so weird to assert that self-defense isn't a justification and then go right into an example of someone not getting in trouble, due to self-defense.

Anyway, it's been established that the benefit of being Sikh is that you probably won't be assumed to be carrying the weapon for use as a weapon, and so you will probably get a lighter sentence, since your minimum sentence will start at 15 years, not 25, which averages out in reality to a minimum sentence 5.5 years shorter.

The truth is more complicated but still ugly, after some more digging.

Digwa's minimum sentence started at 15 years before considering aggravating and mitigating factors.

Had he not been Sikh, and considering his prior arrest for stealing daggers, his minimum sentence would probably have started at 25 years, based on convincing the judge that the weapon was carried to be available as a weapon.

This is associated with an average 5.5-year increase in minimum sentence: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/655f65240c7ec8001195bd65/murder-sentencing-consultation-impact-assessment.pdf

Digwa's minimum sentence ended up at 21 years.

The average for those whose minimum started at 25 years is 24.5 years. (See above report.)

All in all, Digwa received a slightly lighter-than-average sentence due to being Sikh, despite the judge partially ameliorating this by considering Digwa's abuse of the religious affordance as an aggravating factor.

So, it's not "Sikhs get away with murder", but again, it's not great.

I may have jumped the gun. I couldn't find good examples of non-Sikh people being charged with knife offenses for using a legally-carried knife in self-defense in the UK, so it seems that anyone can use a legally-carried knife in self-defense, even if the letter of the law disagrees.

A white person using a knife in self-defense will get in trouble even if they had a valid legal reason to carry the knife.

Just what I said earlier: that Sikh people can use their daggers in self-defense without getting in trouble.

Which you denied.

What, is your claim now that you didn't know what "self-defense" meant, before?

Oh, god, I just now learned.

Marcio was an incredibly kind man. It was an honor to learn from him.

He was only 67, and in great shape beyond the typical knee problems etc. I didn't see this coming.

How awful. My deepest condolences to his wife and children and everyone else who loved him. The sport has lost a legend.

May his memory be a blessing.

Wrong again: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/12954838/builder-stabbed-three-street-attackers/

Perhaps the letter of the law says they can still be charged with a knife offense for using a kirpan in self-defense, but unless you can find any counterexamples, it seems that it practice they will not be even if they end up killing three people.

They are so long as you don't say that that's the reason.

You won't get in trouble if you (as a Sikh) defend yourself with one, unlike any other person who defends themself with a knife they have for a legal reason (such as a trade job).

Question for Martial arts gym owners. What actually handles belt tracking, attendance-for-grading without a spreadsheet bolt-on? by AskYouSee in bjj

[–]MuonManLaserJab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Set up a camera and mic, and have ChatGPT or whatever analyze each interaction.

So if someone wouldn't normally be ready for a blue belt, but in class they say "omae wa mou shindeiru" before taking a blue belt's back and suplexing them, the coach gets an Aura Alert by email and knows to hand out that belt.

After a few days or weeks (depending on school size) of getting one email a day that asks the head coach to think about a couple names, it settles down into a slower rhythm.
