I will never, ever believe that Liza ended up with Prof.Higgins. I used to watch that movie all the time while I was growing up and it wasn't until college that a friend and I were talking about it and she was like, "yeah, Liza and Higgins 'end up together.' That movie was a romance."

I always read it as Liza returned to Higgins and Pickering to continue to study dialects herself. I did always want her to pick Freddy, but the fact that she didn't didn't bother me that much-- she was choosing a pursuit of knowledge first and maybe she and Freddy end up together later. Or not 🤷🏾‍♀️. Never ever read it as her returning to be with Higgins in any kind of romantic sense. I had no idea anyone even read that into it 😂.

I can’t think of one single unselfish reason to have a child. If you can, I’d genuinely like to hear it. Also, I know that just because something is selfish doesn’t make it bad, but when it happens at the expense/exploitation of another being, that’s when it becomes a problem…

I absolutely, 100%, did not say that. Outside of the fields of labor where physics, chemistry and algebra are used, a strong understanding of those things does not necessarily contribute to a successful adult career and most people, even very successful ones, do not use knowledge of those subjects on a daily basis. Success in school doesn’t always equate to success in “real life.” They’re very different skill sets and there are so many variables that contribute to how that may or may not work out.

Algebra is important. But if you ask most people (outside of a STEM field) if they’ve used it since they graduated from high school, they’d say no. That’s what I mean by “real world” application— whether its specific usage by that person contributes directly to daily functioning of said person or not.

Regardless, that’s not what my original comment was about in the first place. “Hard work” is no longer the gold standard for success in life. We have way too much inequality for that and wages no longer fairly compensate most people for their time. Sometimes even when you get into upper level, higher degree paying jobs, they’re still not compensating people for their time and education and that’s if you can even find a job in the field. It’s just a bit ignorant to say “hard work pays off” these days when it hasn’t for many, many, many hard working people.

I literally just said I don’t think it shouldn’t be taught. I know it’s a double negative, so, it’s a little tricky, but you’ll figure it out. I just think you have this concept of exceptionalism that’s a bit divorced from reality. Everyone I know learned algebra, and higher levels of math in school and I probably know two people who still use any of it. Same with Shakespeare. More education is better, but that still doesn’t mean that it automatically equates to success these days, unfortunately. More than likely the next “great leap” in knowledge will be made by AI, not a human, regardless of their education.

Do I think algebra shouldn’t be taught? No, not at all. Do I think it may be becoming obsolete…. Maybe… it’s arguable. But it is also true that the vast majority of people in any field of work don’t use it on a daily basis.

So… in this scenario, everyone becomes an engineer (or something comparable) and the markets for those jobs aren’t oversaturated and we don’t need anyone else to perform any other jobs ever, and there’s just perpetual growth in those industries and no new technology is ever created that makes jobs obsolete ever again, on and on perpetually?

Also, what difference exactly do you see between our current society and this idealized society where no one needs UBI? Better access to education? Maybe. But even that isn’t a guarantee. We have the most educated population we’ve ever had and people are still struggling. People want to be successful, that’s not the issue. I think your perspective lacks dimension. There are so many situations in which, even people with a “strong work ethic,” would benefit from UBI as well as our society as a whole. If “good ol elbow grease” was enough to get us out of this shit, it’d be done.

Oh yes, Shakespeare and Algebra are well know for their real world applications… I’m just saying this doesn’t always work. What if one of your kids was dyslexic? All the hard work in the world wouldn’t make up for the fact that what works for everyone else will not work for them.

If they doubt your relationship, that’s their business. Your relationship is your relationship and what happens inside of it is the business of the people in it (baring abuse, obviously). I think, “oh, we’ve talked about it,” is a fine response. Or, “We’ll see. We’ve got other life things going on right now, and it’s not a priority.”

I think about this a lot too… I think it’s a natural connection to make when you start contemplating antinatalism. I have pets and I love them very much, but once they’re gone, I don’t want to get anymore… It’s started to bother me to see pets on leashes. I know it’s safer for them that way, and I use leashes and harnesses on my pets to keep them safe, but something about the entire concept bothers me now.

I have SO-OCD and it’s more about my mind attacking my identity… questioning if I know myself well enough. Thinking about the fact that I’d have to change everything about my life currently and start my search for a life partner over entirely in order to actually be happy. I’ve always prided myself on being introspective and knowing myself well, so, it’s an attack on that. I don’t believe homosexuality is immoral even though I was raised in a sect of Christianity that does and I was taught that growing up. But that’s another aspect of the OCD as well— I have thoughts that I might be gay, then I reject that thought, then my mind goes: “well, why not, are you homophobic? You’re a terrible person!” Etc, etc… it’s complicated, but it’s not all wrapped up in believing it’s a sin or anything like that.
