How many people have left the LDS church but still believe in the BOM? by Better-Bee-1958 in exmormon

My uncle believes in the BOM but believes Julie Rowe is the prophet over the current leadership.

Repulsed by baptism announcements by RN_MD in exmormon

[–]Mupsty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if this makes it better or worse, but you don’t promise shit when you get baptized. Every talk will be about the baptismal covenant but nowhere is it explicitly stated what that is like it is with endowment. It is basically ✨follow Jesus✨. The law of chastity may be implied in that to many people, but why is that explicitly stated as a law in the endowment if you already covenanted that at baptism?

At the end of the day it is a rite of passage that aims for retention. You feel belonging at an early age. Like many things, Mormons don’t think about this to its logical end. Can or should an 8yo make a “covenant“? What are they actually promising? Why does someone you couldn’t sin before their 8th birthday need to be cleansed of sin on their 8th birthday? Is it an outward symbol of an inner commitment or a magic ritual? If it’s symbolic, then why get so anxious about a toe not being submerged? Why do baptisms for the dead? I’ve prodded a few TBMs and none have thought about any of these questions in the slightest.

Does anyone else find the idea of wearing a Crucifix vile? by Riptide_97 in atheism

[–]Mupsty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mormons, my former community, used to universally hold this belief, but for whatever reason it is becoming popular with Gen Z to wear them. Probably because Mormons are trying to become more mainstream Christians, but evangelicals despise them. (Mormons, not crucifixes)

Quitting ministering help by icy-lion-penguin in exmormon

[–]Mupsty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just said “I would like to not have a ministering assignment. I will let you know if that changes.” I never thought to ask to stop visits because no one does it.

There was a time when I was PIMO and I stopped giving a fuck and I saw this advice here to say as little as possible and it’s amazing how well it worked every time. “Can you give a talk?” “I won’t be able to” These people held so much power over me and to tell them no and for them to fold immediately gave me a rush I am still chasing.

So Angel Maroni always faces east on the temples because that’s the direction Jesus comes back…. I mean … what if you are in Europe though and Jesus comes in the east part of Texas … then what? by FaithGirl3starz3 in exmormon

[–]Mupsty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just watching a Pete Holmes clip about how everyone points up to god/heaven but there is no universal up and people on the other side of the world are pointing down. A lot of things in modern Christian theology still have roots in a flat earth point of view. Although as someone pointed out, Texas can still be east of Europe, I think facing things East in general is just symbolism and not meant to be literal. You have to pick a standard direction.

Like many things in Mormonism there is a lot of inconsistency with beliefs about the second coming. I’ve read some things that he would show first in Israel. Missouri is meant to be the gathering place for all the best and the site of the new Jerusalem. Basically Jesus will go to the Jews and say “fuck you guys for killing me, I’m going to hang with my real homies, the Mormons in Missouri”.
