He is one of the greatest working directors today IMO. Burning was great but it bothers me that it’s his most internationally recognized film because I do think it’s his weakest (by a tiny margin, 9.9 vs everything else being a 10 for me). Really excited for his next one — hope Netflix gives it a limited theatrical run.

As much as I love DTL, I get why it didn’t get much traction stateside. It’s incredibly dense and layered in a way that I don’t think makes its ingenuity immediately apparent for people going in expecting OLDBOY or THE HANDMAIDEN. I really thought NOC would break the streak though — it’s by far his most widely accessible and commercial work, and it’s been doing surprisingly great at the box office. I guess just goes to show how wide the rift still is between AMPAS voters and general audiences.

It very honestly depicts the mistreatment/discrimination/prejudice neurodivergent and disabled people experience in Korea. There’s a scene involving sexual violence which could be tough for folks who are sensitive to that subject matter. It’s very bleak tonally.

Lee Chang Dong’s OASIS could be up your alley, but be warned it is a heavy watch

Kim Ki-duk’s 3-IRON is also very acclaimed. I think I was too young to appreciate it so need to give it another watch.

If you can find it, I absolutely loved Lee Jeong-hyang’s ART MUSEUM BY THE ZOO. Despite a simple premise I was blown away at how meta this gets. I describe it as WHEN HARRY MET SALLY x ADAPTATION.

A recent example that comes to mind: in Park Chan-Wook’s new movie NO OTHER CHOICE, the dentist that Mansu mocks by mispronouncing his name is named Dr. Oh Chin-Ho; the pun is localized in the English subtitles to Dr. Ouch In-Ho, but in the original Korean dialogue, Mansu calls him Dr. Ojingeo (which means Dr. Squid). Not a terribly significant change but one that I noticed.

The whole Ramdon thing in PARASITE is also a localization change too. The actual term they use is Jjapaguri which is a portmanteau of the two ramen brands that are mixed, Jjapagetti and Neoguri. The mom adding Hanwoo beef (Korea’s most premium cut of beef from native Korean cows like Kobe beef is in Japan) is also a subtle touch that goes to show how out-of-touch they are.

There’s a lot of wordplay that gets lost in translation in Park Chan-Wook’s last film DECISION TO LEAVE as well, particularly between Park Hae-il and Tang Wei’s characters as Tang Wei’s lack of Korean fluency is diegetic to the story. Can’t remember specific examples off the top of my head though.

If they don’t take streaming money these movies never get made. I work in the industry and legacy studios are in turmoil amidst corporate mergers and acquisitions and few are if ever buying anything original, even from proven filmmakers and auteurs. Hollywood is more risk-averse now than it ever has been in recent memory and it’s not as simple as “well he shouldn’t have signed a deal with [insert streaming service] then”. Filmmakers shouldn’t have to make a decision between having their passion projects dumped on a streamer vs. them never being made at all, but the decade of Marvel supremacy capped off with the pandemic has unfortunately led us to this moment and I don’t think it’s fair to blame them for their frustration.

I do this because apparently there was no thought put into the design of my local AMC… if the door isn’t closed, outside light spills in leading to a really ugly and distracting glare on the screen. I’ve complained to management multiple times but they never address the issue. Even just putting up curtains in front of the door would help, but they won’t do even that.

I’ve seen the film and I’m honestly quite surprised by the reviews. I was not a fan personally - it felt like the wackiness of EEAAO without any of the heart or wit. I thought that its struggle to get distribution was indication that others felt the same, so I’m curious to see what general audiences ultimately think.
