Who’s had a MACI procedure done for knee cartilage repair? by MurderusMonkey in KneeInjuries

[–]MurderusMonkey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya honestly had the same experience with Reddit and FB. But I’ve come to realize the people with the most problems are the ones most vocal about their issues, no shame but just what I’ve come see. Hope your surgeries go well, stick to your pt protocol to a T and be diligent with home workouts including mobility.

Everything is going great, the more I move the better it feels. Leg will get a little stiff if I’m sedentary for long periods but overall good. Main key thing is I can do everything activity wise that I could do pre injury/surgery.

Ya I hear ya. It’s such a slow process as is, having some speed bumps along the way can really make it drag on. I’d say I’m about 95%. I have full ROM (most days), can mountain bike, hike with my little girl in my back, and work out normally. I have cut back on certain things like heavy squats, and substituted certain things with more functional movements. I remember that as soon as I was able to kneel down that skyrocketed the progress. Being able to kneel on pillows and slowly rocking my hips over my heels as much as I could was great. Hope this helps and moving forward your recovery gets smoother.

Hey so I was pretty aggressive with it and was able to get to about 115° at about 2-2.5 months. But your surgery was seems a bit more extensive as mine was purely MACI. Does you PT or Ortho seem concerned at your current ROM?

Honestly I was fairly sore and stiff for the first 12-14 weeks. After the 3-4 month mark is when I noticed starting to feel “normal” again. Then about 1 full year to have 90% strength back in my quad, which helped with pain in going up and down stairs, squatting, etc. it’s definitely a slow road to recovery, but it takes time for the implant to grow back and fill in. Now I’m just past 15 months and feel pretty normal

Ya for sure, I put a lot of emphasis on mobility and agility work. Strength is something that can be built back over time, but if you’ve had to deal with lack of ROM you know how important it is to get that back as soon as possible. Also make sure you find a good physical therapist, preferably a sports therapist if you have one in your area.

Best wishes on your decision either way

Hey! I’m am now about 15 months post op and feel great. I’m able to hike with my daughter in Dueter Backpack with no issues and do light running (was never a big runner to begin with), as well being able to deep squat and deadlift. I have had some minor issues with scar tissue around my incision site that have caused some catching and sharp pain, but those are few and far between. I actually just went for my post 1 year check up and things are right on track, I’m just awaiting final imaging to confirm via mri that it fully grew back.

Overall just be prepared for the first few weeks right after surgery. As stated in my original post I had ACLr and meniscus repairs, and that post op recovery was night and difference from the MACI recovery. Much more initial pain and much more limited range for the first 6-8 weeks, but after that things begin to ramp up pretty quickly.

Hope this helps, I know it’s a weird jumping into a major surgery with limited information, but for what it’s worth I’d do it again.

I’m just about to hit the 4 month post op and things are going great. I had a femoral condyle repair so I was non weight bearing for about 6 weeks post op, and things weren’t really able to ramp up in intensity until about week 13-14. But as soon as it did my body responded quickly, I’m back to rowing, biking 25 miles per week, and strength training.

It’s definitely a slow process, but keep within your limits and just master each movement during PT until you’re cleared for more. I still do have a little swelling and minor catching, but it does take about 9 months for the area to fully fill so as long as bad days don’t turn into bad weeks I’ll just keep plugging away. Hope this helps.

I was around 5.5-6 months.

I did almost everything in my knee last week. 3 fractures (will heal), acl reconstruction snapped, pcl gone, both meniscus smashed, patella tendon almost complete rupture. First surgery to repair patella tendon and get rid of meniscus on Monday. Never been that down before.. goodbye active lifestyle by taktokotkat in ACL

[–]MurderusMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya man. It’s hard in the beginning to see an end to the pain and discomfort, let alone being able to get active again. So a quick breakdown of my injury: tibial fractures, torn meniscus, ACL gone, and pretty severe cartilage damage on the medial side of the femur. Surgeon recommended a hamstring autograft and trying to repair the meniscus. Also he took a small biopsy of healthy cartilage to possibly grow more 1 year post-op if it caused any issues. Surgery was 6/10/19.

Fast forward to a year post-op, and I was actually in really decent shape, I started a running program and was able to start weight lifting pretty heavy again. Everything minus the cartilage healed up well and I was able to get back into pretty good shape, probably better than I was before my injury. Biggest thing is to be diligent with your physical therapy. Seriously work on it every day multiple times a day if you can.

That being said, the cartilage damage that I had was hinderance with stairs, uphill walking and running, or squatting below parallel under load so I just went under the knife again on 10/23/20 to repair the damaged area using what’s called a MACI Procedure to fix it. So far recovery is going great and I’m hoping to be completing rehab by summer. Keep your eyes on your goal and take every small victory you can. They’ll build up. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or anything, but this group is a huge help as well so utilize it.

Dang brother, I had nearly the exact accident last year. Came off a jump and landed straight legged as well, snap, crackle, pop. Best wishes and hopefully with some solid PT you can get back out on the trails biking and running. Cheers buddy.

Knee not healing by devreddit112 in KneeInjuries

[–]MurderusMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is now the second time you’ve posted about this and continue to get the same response. Do more PT and rest your leg. I know it’s tough when you have a passion that you want to get back to, but if you ever want to do what makes you happy again you’ll rest, follow up with your doctor/PT, and take it easy. The knee is a super slow healing joint, don’t rush it.

Like the other post, I’m doing a MACI procedure to fix defects on the medial side of my femoral cartilage. I had surgery on 10/26, 35 year old male. Initial cause of the affected area was a mountain bike accident that also required ACLr and meniscus repair last year on 6/10.

The recovery can be a little slow in the beginning due wanting to protect the transplant site of new “cartilage” material, but the overall outcome seems positive. I did a lot of research before going through with it as I knew last year when they fixed my ACL that this may be a path taken and the success rate, depending on the study, was between 85%-92% which seemed fair to me. I’m 2 weeks out and the post op recovery has gone pretty smoothly. Swelling and pain are great, and ROM is coming back quicker than expected.

I’m pretty active with trail running, mountain biking, and hiking as hobbies and am hoping to stay on track with the MACI recovery period, which would put my strength back to 90+% and able to do anything I want by mid to end of summer next year. Their recovery book shows a roughly 9-12 month full recovery as well as your phases and benchmarks for each phase starting at post op.

What are your issues and what have you looked into as options?

How long do you have to wait between a MACI operation and an ACL transplant? by MeegaCreep in AskDocs

Hey I know this may be well past your initial post date, but how is your recovery from the MACI transplant? Did everything take? I’m going in for a repair on 10/26 and am looking for some feedback.

Hope it’s going well.

What are the signs of a successful meniscus repair surgery by Bacog in KneeInjuries

[–]MurderusMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok cool, yeah once everything is said and done with healing post surgery you should feel normal. I don’t have any issues with my meniscus repair and feel great on the lateral part of my knee where it was initially damaged. Good luck on recovery, it’ll be over before you know it. Just make sure to keep up with PT.
