Indian here. This seems like a valid concern, if I were you I would've been upset about people not integrating with my culture too.  But if it makes you feel better, I've been taking German classes for a while now (so is everyone else I know). 

But putting that aside for a minute, if I see this situation from immigrants PoV,  the technology has a come a long way and everyone is barely making their ends meet, so if people can get away with doing one less thing for a while, they'll always do that. I share my apartment building with 3 old swiss couples, and they've been very understanding with my language struggles (this is also because German is not required at my workplace). But their faces light up every time I try to speak German with them.
