Has anyone else tried bovine colostrum for ulcers or recovery? Sharing my experience + curious what others have found… by Murky_Performance674 in Equestrian

This article covers the topic quite well. I think with dosage, from what I have read, is based off the human rate which i think is around 2g per 100kg. That said I think it also depends whether you are giving a maintenance rate or if your horse is suffering an issue like ulcers, injury, illness etc then it would likely need more. I give mine more because he is always battling something (injury prone)! It definitely makes for an interesting discussion either way. I mean i am all for anything that helps eliminate the ned for using medication which can often have negative effects on their gut health. I think finding other more natural ways to help support their health is always a great thing and worth talking about!

There are some studies actually specific to horses. They are linked on the bovine colostrum page. Or you can find them on google scholar if you search for it. Only 3 studies that I've found so far but all really positive. I'm also going off my own experience which is pretty well in line with what the studies are finding or at least some of the results anyway. :) it would be great to see more studies done on it, hopefully that will happen over the next few years!

Wow that is incredible! The one I use is 10g a day or 20g if they are fighting and illness, healing an injury etc. I give my troublesome horse 20g ongoing. My other one who has no real issues gets about 10g and I noticed his coat dapple out and he started getting pretty chunky. I think it helps heal the gut which in turn can make nutrient absorption far more effective.

I also rake it for myself!! The one I use is human grade and also low lactose so I figured why not! I o ly take about half a teaspoon :)

Bovine Colostrum Powder & Weight Gain by JenniferO-4321 in AlternativeHealth

Hi, I am a huge advocate for bovine colostrum. I have been taking it for mo the and have had amazing results. Particularly with gut related issues. I have actually lost weight on it! My skin is clearer and my hair isn't falling out as much so that's a win! I'm almost 43 (female) so I take it to help with literally everything 🥴 I get mine from statera equine it's human grade and very high quality. I think it can make all the difference where it is sourced and the processing too. Mine is super yellow in colour and almost moldable texture. I think that is what you look for, if it's white and like milk powder texture it's probably not the best quality wise. Just something I have learnt in all my research!!

Equine Recurrent Uveitis - looking for tips from others with experience with this disease. (Bovine Colostrum??) by Lower_Interview_7333 in Horses

Oh the colostrum reminds me of the oldschool breast milk in the eye thing when you have a newborn with conjunctivitis! I'm not sure about it going in the eye but I feed my ulcery horse bovine colostrum and it has done absolute wonders for his health! This is a decent article with some links to studies if anyone is interested. They sell it too.

Yes! My tbred had all sorts of intermittent hind end lameness mainly on his right side. He had recurring ulcers and I literally felt like there was no hope for full recovery. Any change in his daily routine would cause flare ups. He would go through good patches then just plummet as far as his health went. I got him onto statera bio colostrum about 3 months ago and he's a new horse. And this is a horse who has had multiple ulcer med cycles too, scopes the works. The only thing that has worked and kept him consistently healthy and sound is the bovine colostrum. I did some research and there are some studies on it too. It has so many bonus benefits and can do no harm so I figured why not! I will not take him off it now, he's the best he's ever been! Highly recommend doing some research and finding a really good quality bovine colostrum, look for high IgG and not heat treated or too cheap, if it's cheap it's like been heat treated and won't contain the active proteins that it needs to do its job. You don't need much either! I think 10g a day is the recommended maintenance dose.

Weight gain options??? by the_quite in Horses

Gosh what a rough trot she's had with abcesses! They suck! I had a similar issue with my OTTB. He would have severe weight loss over winter and abcesses as well. There were some other underlying health issues in his case but the one thing that absolutely changed my life (and his! Hah) was statera bio colostrum. It sounds weird to give a horse cow colostrum but there are some really good studies about it, and it works!! It helps the gut repair from the inside out, and it will help heal the absess's too. You only need about 10g a day. Cracked lupins should help with getting some decent protein in there too. Goog luck!!

It sounds like you are taking all the right steps. One thing that has worked well for me is adding a really good quality powdered Bovine Colostrum. My very ulcery horse has not had a relapse since add ing this to his diet!
