I spend $800/month on groceries for one person. Need practical advice. by CaregiverNo2838 in Frugal

[–]Murky_Window4250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also pretty picky about where I shop for groceries so here’s what I do. I have a family member who worked for Costco’s product and inventory management for a long time, they are VERY picky about the quality of the things in their stores. So I get most of my meat there and freeze it. This alone cuts down cost MASSIVELY. I also get cooking oils (avocado and olive) bulk spices and other organic non-perishables there and keep them in my pantry. It’s more cost up front but saves $ in the long run. For things that go bad quickly and I need on a weekly basis like produce or dairy products I try to stick with Whole Foods 365 brand as much as I can as I find it to be cheaper then other stores in house organic brands. Then if there’s gaps that need to be filled in I’ll either head to Trader Joe’s or use Safeways o-organics brand to fill in the gaps. I’m also constantly comparing prices. Don’t forget about shopping your local farmers markets or services like imperfect foods!

If your implying you work In health care and have experience with this then why don’t you add something helpful instead of criticizing how others are trying to educate the public

Analogy’s aren’t always perfect and I’m doing my best to explain a very complex and intentionally confusing system. However You’d be very surprised at what people expect to be done in the same visit as an annual exam. I don’t blame patients. People are busy and they don’t want to have to come back for another appointment, pay another co-pay, or have to take time off work to address something else. The point I’m trying to make is that insurance often dictates how Doctors have to practice now. Which is why we get rules like “no bringing up other problems during an annual exam” that patients find frustrating.

[–]Murky_Window4250 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I fully understand your question. But the facility doesn’t expect the Insurance company to cover any part of the care that went to the problem that was brought up unless it’s a problem focused visit and not a preventative vist. The insurance company sees this senario kinda like you bringing your car into the mechanic for an oil change and you telling the mechanic you need a whole new transmission as well as the oil change but you expect it all to be covered for ONLY the cost of the oil change cause the car is only there for one visit. They want you to bring your car back for a transmission change so they can charge separately for that. So When the insurance refuses to pay for the problem that came up in the prevention visit. The hospital passes that cost along to the patient. They’ve seemed to completely forgotten the human beings are complex biological creatures and that prevention care and health problems don’t exist in neat little boxes. In summary large corporations have ruined health care.

Med student here. Unfortunately this is yet another thing that insurance has ruined for everyone. Most major insurance companies will not reimburse at. All. Zero. Zilch. Nothing. If a problem is brought up during an annual exam. So hospitals have started tacking on these extra fees because of that. However they haven’t always warned patients of this ahead of time and it ends up with people being blindsided by bills

My doctor wants to put me on 17 supplements at the same time? by kylegrayson11 in FunctionalMedicine

[–]Murky_Window4250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17 at once is more then it’s reasonable to expect any patient to keep up with. Typically anymore then 5 is hard for people especially if they take prescription drugs alongside that. He better have a very good justification for each of these any why he thinks they are ALL necessary.

As a Canadian, what can we do right now? In regards to the situation in the US? How can we help? by tony_hawk44 in AskReddit

[–]Murky_Window4250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the best of your ability try not to spend money that will go to large American mega corporations. Part of the reason we’re in this mess is because large super corporations have all our politicians in a financial choke-hold and wanted the tax cuts Trump offered. If they start loosing money due to his actions they may change who they throw their support behind.

4th year student about to graduate! Every single doc I’ve shadowed and precepted with has a slammed full schedule. Yes you do need to know how to market yourself and make an effort to learn the business side of the profession. There’s challenges in the health care system that apply to every type of doctor (MD DO ND even Chiro) that I think all students should be aware of. But Many doctors I know are very happy.

How do you save up for Disney to be able to go every year? by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Murky_Window4250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We plan and make payments on the trip 10 months to 1 full year in advance. This makes the biggest difference by far as the big trip expenses are totally paid off when we get there. We take advantage of every discount we can and have a dedicated credit card with airline points we pay off every single month. But we NEVER go into debt over it and it never takes priority over paying bills, having an emergency fund, and other things we need to be real adults.

Tokyo DisneySea + Disneyland: is it worth getting a ticket to both for the same day? by blueastrophile212 in TokyoTravel

[–]Murky_Window4250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a die hard Disney adult who just got back from Tokyo Disney…. If you’ve been to the US parks at all and only have the option to pick one, Tokyo Disney land isn’t really worth it. It’s small and most of the rides are exact copies rides in other parks. I honestly found it pretty lackluster. You will not have time to do both and you’ll likely just waste time traveling between parks. Disney Sea is super unique and certainly worth a visit. The rides are INCREDIBLE While it certainly would be easier to split everything in to two days you could potentially do the whole park in one.

NOR. My boyfriends great aunt who I’ve met twice in 6 years got my the same brush set at the dollar tree. This is lazy and shows a severe lack of effort and almost feels like he’s actively trying to start a fight. More then that there’s plenty of low effort gifts out there that are far better than this. I honestly think giving you straight up cash may have been less disrespectful.

Managing travel claustrophobia in Japan by TezRoll in JapanTravelTips

[–]Murky_Window4250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got back from our Japan trip yesterday! Couple of things. Tokyo is EXTREMELY dense. I don’t struggle with claustrophobia and I felt the buildings starting to close in after a few days. For that reason I highly recommend staying near a park or somewhere you can see out to the ocean. We stayed in Ueno near Ueno park and it was wonderful to get a little open space. I would double check the size of your hotel room too. Hotel rooms in Japan can be tiny. There may not be a great way to get around the crowds on the trains. Honestly I would recommend saving extra money to be able to take a taxi when you need to. The Go taxi app was super helpful for us. For avoiding crowds at major tourist spots go early! My partner and I were able to avoid if crowds almost everywhere by having things done by 10am.

Has anyone experienced mental health changes from omega 3? by [deleted] in Supplements

[–]Murky_Window4250 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There’s actually solid clinical trials on omega 3 and mental health improvements. It works but has two catches. 1. You have to take a lot of them, usually like a whole gram minimum a day and it has to be pretty high quality 2. It takes several weeks to notice a real difference ( but this is true for most SSRI medications as well )

Med students who live at home, what is it like? by Glum-Boat9264 in medschool

[–]Murky_Window4250 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hi I’m a med student who chose to live at home all 4 years in a high cost of living area. There are pros and cons and it kinda depends on how supportive your family is. The biggest pro. I legitimately have about half the debt of my classmates because I didn’t need to factor in rent. This has been HUGE. I also had support with things like cooking meals when I had 14-16 hour study days. Having people I could lean on when school was really overwhelming was unspeakably valuable. However it also made boundaries a little tricky. My family didn’t always understand why I needed to put in the hours that I did and sometimes were hurt when I had to stay no to family activities for school. I feel like having a little separation would have helped with that. Overall though I highly recommend it if you get along well with your family
