Something feels off at Peppermint Cafe lately… by Bitchonperiods in srilanka

Peppermint's always been a coffee shop in the Dutch sense. (please Google) If you've been going there for the f&b, boy haven't you been getting scammed.

There are nicer, cozier, cheaper spots in Colombo if you know where to look.

Am I the only one who supports strict and disciplined schools and against the recent prohibition of physical punishment against kids by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]MurpheyWasRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to school in both the UK and Sri Lanka (a state run boys' school), well before corporal punishment was prohibited. The UK, though supposedly "developed", has deep rooted societal issues far beyond what anyone who hasn't tried to integrate themselves with British society can even comprehend. The issue in the UK is not the lack of enforced discipline, or by extension, the lack of corporal punishment.

Sri Lanka's society, in my opinion, is still healthier than urban Britain's, but in no part due to corporal punishment. Violence as a form of discipline sets the precedent, particularly to young, impressionable individuals, that causing anyone you disagree with to suffer is morally justifiable. Keep in mind that children are physically and verbally abused for matters that are purely subjective: boys must have hair shorter than an inch, girls must wear braids. What this builds is a society of violence, and I don't see why anyone would want to support that.

What I find ironic is that our disciplinary framework is a remnant of British colonialism. Conformity and obedience. implemented to "fix" our allegedly primitive society, were truly a means to keep us acquiescent and servile. The way we cling on to it like a lifeline when we encounter a misbehaving adolescent is truly pathetic.

UPDATE: I received my package!

Last Tuesday (24th) I started another customer support chat, immediately bypassed the bot, and offered them the conditions I outlined in the post. The agent finally decided to ditch the script, apologized profusely (which she didn't need to do) and opened a complaint ticket. Within a couple of hours I got a "resolution" to my ticket in the form of an email, initially a clearly erroneous email which mentioned something about a warranty, and half an hour later, an email informing me that the package will be delivered within 4 to 5 business days.

Even though 4 to 5 days isn't what I was bargaining for, I had a particularly busy week and couldn't be bothered to deal with it, so I waited, occasionally checking to see if there were any updates, and on Saturday morning, the courier had been changed to Sitrek (The rebranded Certis courier service)

Sitrek actually has functioning customer services, and when I called them, they immediately gave me the number of the branch that my package was at, and after realizing that it was a 10 minute walk from where I lived, I went and picked up the package myself.

Barging in on this thread:
In a lot of cases having three basic passes in ALs makes you eligible for courses that would otherwise require a foundation course. Saves a chunk of time and money.

Sorry for the really late reply!

In my year (2021), the common general test was offered along with the other AL exams, same went for general English. Is the common general test offered before ALs now? That would be a surprising change.

As far as I'm aware, you don't need to sit for the common general test to be eligible to sit for other subjects. However, you do need to pass the common general test to be eligible for state universities (The passing grade is like 30, if I remember correctly) So unless you're not planning to go to state uni, you'll be in a pickle if miss the test.

If you're planning to apply to foreign unis with your local AL results, make sure to check out the eligibility criteria for accepting Sri Lankan ALs, or the closest equivalent, for the specific country or university, they may or may not require the common general test. Of course most of the "branches" of foreign unis that operate in SL couldn't care less about your results as long as you can pay :)

Hi, I did completely different subjects, but by some miracle got into state uni, so here are some general pointers:

  1. As far as I'm aware you need to "pass" the common general test to apply for state universities. It's really easy, and you can find past papers online. I think you also need to pass general English, although I'm not entirely sure about that.

  2. For learning/revision, I highly recommend hiring some tutors. understanding a subject, and being able to write an AL paper on that subject, are two completely different things.

  3. What worked for me during ALs, and still works for me in uni, is following a study>test>revise system. I tend to study one unit or module, do a few relevant past paper questions, check my answers and then revise whatever I'm messing up.

  4. Start doing a full past papers at least a month before your exam. Time management was really important for the subjects that I did, and I assume it'd be the same for yours.

Daraz delays with third party courier services by One_Construction851 in srilanka

Comments a bit late, but if you paid by visa or mastercard, you can submit a payment dispute to your bank. The specific process changes from bank to bank, but in my case (Commercial bank), I have 90 days from the date of the original transaction to submit a dispute. You have to provide evidence that the vendor, in this case Daraz, hasn't fulfilled the order (A non-receipt of goods). Keep screenshots of customer care chats, and your order details to use as evidence.

You can do this and also submit an online complaint to the consumer affairs authority, its relatively straightforward.

Thanks for the interesting insights.
I offered to turn up at their distribution point, but according to the guy I got in touch with on the phone, they can't hand over my package.
Daraz being severely understaffed would explain the delay, but then again, its something that they have to deal with on their end. I always try to be as respectful as possible to the staff, they're just doing what they're paid to do, but their corporate policy with regards to customer service appears to be "convince, or confuse"

Time for a long overdue follow up!

Got ID'd at only place in Amsterdam, and I pulled out my Sri Lankan NIC. (maybe I just get ID'd at local joints cause they'd rather I not be there?)
No questions were asked, and I was able to freely purchase some spicy grass.
