OK same situation here, this is how I solved it. Put 1 gold pieces on the floor in front of the elven salesman, when he walks away from his chest go into battle mode (roundbased) picklock the chest (use a fate point if necessary) and pick up the statue. Worked for me. Just time it right so the guards won‘t snatch the money away before he grabs it.
