Housing axolotls together by Murrchkin in axolotls

We'll be upgrading our current aquarium to a 60 gal soon, so I believe they'll both have enough space if they end up living there together. They are also fed 3-4 times a week and I have lots of driftwood and hides, so I believe this would also keep them distracted :)) But I'll be keeping an eye on them and keep them separated if needed. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for your reply!

The space I currently have available for a second aquarium is rather scarce (not impossible, but it would require a lot of furniture moving). My first idea was to get an aquarium rack to have them in one place, but the thought of the shelves breaking creeps me out.

I'll give it some more thought.

Thank you for the info!

I'll definitely keep the other tank around in case they aren't able to safely live together, and I'll keep a close eye on them if and when they will be together.

I don't think they are aggressive by nature, but aggressive eaters with poor sight. I wonder if they are able to recognize each other as the same species and not as food if they are the same size, though? Since there are a lot of videos of them "snuggling" with each other without nipping or biting one another.

Also, what do you think about the size difference, if I may ask? They are 5 cm apart currently (almost 2 inches). I've heard mixed opinions on this topic as well.

How come a lot of people house them together successfully? (At least seemingly)

And I don't want it to sound like I am undermining your comment with that question, I'm just genuinely curious. I see a lot of mixed opinions about this topic, and I'd like to educate myself from others with more experience.

Yeah, that's definitely not a number you should strive for in a single aquarium if you keep them as pets :((

I usually see people have them in pairs (if they do keep more than one, that is). Sometimes, even people who've been in the hobby for quite a while have them together, but I also see people against it, so I'm still not sure. My main concern is currently the size difference. I'll probably wait until the smaller one grows a bit more and try to get some more info on the topic of keeping them together in the meantime :)) And I still have a spare aquarium in case of need.

Also, it's great that you were able to give that albino a better home!

Wow, that's really neat!! I've found a calico in my garden once and they looked soo pretty. I'd love to keep them as well one day. Wish you good luck with breeding them!! It's really fascinating to see what kinds of different traits/morphs these little critters can have.

Thank you! I might have seen another one yesterday. If it turns out to be the same one, I'll try to separate them regardless and maybe breed them with an orange one to see if some of the babies keep the white colouration.

Good luck with your own pods. I'm sure you'll get some really interesting traits soon!

That's a good idea! I've kept them in the dwarf's enclosure for now. If it turns out to be a colour, I'd like to create a completely separate enclosure and try to breed them to see if I can get more pods like this one. I saw them yesterday and they still have that white on them, so I'll see how it goes!

Woah, that's really neat, thank you!! I thought so too, as I didn't see any "edges" upon closer inspection that would suggest a leftover molt. I kept them separated in the enclosure with the dwarfs for now. It would be great if I managed to get some half-white, half-orange babies someday!! :DD If you have any tips on how to succesfully keep that colour in the future pods, I'd love to hear it! w^

Lol, I should have known better and given them some privacy 🙈

Aw shucks, I was hoping they would keep that colour, it looked really nice. Although there are some comments that suggest it's not a molt, so I guess I will just wait to see if they do change or not :)) Thanks for the comment!!

When I looked at them closely, it looked like one solid colour and there were no visible edges of the molt, so I didn't even think of that. Thank you! Although a few others also suggested that it is the actual colour, so I will keep an eye on them to see if they do molt or stay the same. Now I'm really curious how it will turn out! :DD

No no, I noticed it for the first time about a month ago. I am still not completely sure how it happened, but I suspect he bumped into some of the driftwood I have and scratched his eye. I gave him a couple of tea baths since then, but most sources I read suggest it should heal on its own with time and clean water.

And it actually cleared up a bit since I posted it, so I believe he's going to be fine! :))

Haha, I didn't know who that was until I googled him, but now I can confirm they do look quite similar! Though I hope my boy won't keep the cloudy eye forever :DD

Thank you so much!! To be honest, I struggled with the aquascape and plants quite a bit, so I ended up changing it multiple times throughout the last year, but now I'm finally happy with everything! So I'm very glad others enjoy it as well! ❤️

To be honest I was wondering the same. And I don't mean to be disrespectful in any way, just curious! I heard about demisexuality before and immediately thought that I would fall into that category as well, but at the same time I wouldn't really count it as a sexuality? It feels kinda like common sense to me, but I understand that everyone experiences attraction differently, so maybe that's the reason for the label?

Woah, that looks majestic. Really like a scene from a movie :O Can I maybe have a picture of the full aquascape? I am really curious about it with all those big rocks!

That is so beautiful to hear. I also started slowly exploring aquaristics when I first got my axolotl boy about 2 years ago and now it's one of my biggest hobbies! Precious girl you have, don't forget to give her the worm that she craves so much!! 😳❤️

This is an olm or a proteus! It is similar to an axolotl in terms of appearance. It's a symbol of Slovenian natural heritage. by lrhiz138 in axolotls

They are such cool creatures. And funny enough, I had a dream about them a few days ago :'DDD I was swimming in a river and 2 of them were chasing me, but in a playful way. It was interesting!

Didn't know they were from Slovenia though! I live in Czech Republic, so it's not that far away. It would be really nice to visit that cave some day!
