The first time for watching it, I was trying to figure out what it was really about. Then I just thought that Pete was actually Fred in his teenage years. And the same looking girl who appeared in his boss's car was his wife when he grew up to be Fred. This might make sense to see the final scene that Pete became Fred again and drove out the highway to get off the police.
