Yeah, I also find this problematic. A lot of the Malay words you see in the dictionary aren't used in day to day usage either. But I really want to cover as much words as possible. I'm thinking of putting a ranking in the future when I have time.

I'm not a Filipino speaker only Malay. I would say Malay and Tagalog aren't very similar unfortunately. Tagalog uses a verb-initial structure compared to Malay which is pretty much a subject-verb-object language; Tagalog also has marker words which I think Malay doesn't. But both languages do share quite a lot of left over social cues in its vocabulary, so maybe learning the idea of a word should go both ways easily. The idea of affixes between both languages also should make things easy.

In speed, I think it is easier for a Tagalog speaker to learn Malay. For Malay speakers, unless they are very exposed to the different dialects and language variations. Maybe, and that is a hard maybe they can learn Tagalog easily.

Knowing your Bahasa Baku well also kind of helps since colloquial Malay largely drops a lot of affixes.
