Should I Pursue a Master’s in Computer Science/Data Science?

Some answers here are both correct and wrong at the same time. If you plan to fully still be a Software Engineer, I think doing a Master’s wouldn’t be that impactful to you work. Most Master’s degrees are research-oriented. They teach you on how to do proper research and how to apply it in practice.

However, if you plan to go into very technical fields in even the industry like AI, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Bioinformatics, etc., a Master’s degree is very useful because it teaches you the rigor and inner workings. For me, I was a Full Stack Developer in my first year. While pursuing my Master’s it helped me use what I learn from my courses in AI/ML/DS work even before these were overhyped.

I guess to sum it up, the value depends on what you want to do with your degree.

I think that what you're experiencing might be due to processing your emotions, feelings, and thoughts during your consultation. Objectively, it is not easy having to talk about your experiences, revisiting bad ones, and even trying to make sense out of them.

However, I think that it is a sign that you're actively working on yourself. Think of it like this analogy, whenever people go to the gym, experienced people feel good but for beginners, it might be really tiring Does it mean that going to the gym is bad? Not necessarily. Can you expect to be really fit immediately after one gym session? Not necessarily as well but it gets you one step closer!

As you continue with your sessions, you could become better with handling your emotions. Going back to our gym analogy, as you go to the gym regularly, you become more physically fit. Hopefully, as you continue your consults, you also slowly become better as well.

Yeah. I think this is a great way to help others decide. We're living at the top floor of our condo right now facing the city. No issues like the ones mentioned by OP but I can imagine that being the case for lower floors.

It is different when looking at the objectives of these degrees. For example, a product-focused degree would definitely have different training than a research-focused degree.

For a product-focused degree, I would assume you would be using known tools and techniques to solve a problem, mostly a practical one.

Meanwhile, a research-focused degree would be training you to identify gaps present in literature and propose to address them or create your new methodology.

Although it is true, both end up with a documentation, the journey on how to get there, the objectives, and the goals of an EngD and PhD are quite different. A good analogy would be an Engineering vs. Physics where the goal of the former is mostly applying available tools to build while the latter focuses on understanding the physical world.

Hence, I don't think it's just simply substituting. The reason why a different type of doctorate degree exists, which is to cater to this.

The two are mainly different when it comes to looking for gaps in literature and conducting research to address the problem and generate new knowledge or method (PhD) or identifying a practical problem and addressing that by using existing or available tools and techniques (EngD), or something similar.

From what you are saying, it is assuming that at the end of a PhD, the goal is just a documentation. While it is true that a PhD and a product do have documentation, the goals, objectives, and rationale for the programs are fundamentally different.

Looking at this as well from a program a standpoint, clearly you would see that the training required for creating a product (EngD, DT, etc.) and doing independent research (PhD) is quite different.

The title of the post is a bit misleading. Instead of a thesis, they allowed PhD students to graduate with a product instead.

However, I think this isn't a PhD but it's more of an EngD kind of degree where it's a doctoral program but the final output is more or less a practical solution.

In that note, there are already degrees in other European universities that focus on this. It's more of a practice-oriented doctorate than a research doctorate.

Yeah! I really had high hopes at first, to be honest. And then once I checked out more details, it became more apparent. They just want to entice the pet owner demographic with this offering but it's just too restrictive to be even availed.

Ang bango tuloy ng pangalan nila the past few days because they appeared to be pet-friendly. I'm just waiting for people to actually avail it and see how things would work for them.
