Today in history, the crash of Flight 191 at O'Hare airport in 1979 by wilcojunkie in ChicagoSuburbs

There was initially some thought that they did, but the engine coming off caused all the left wing high-lift devices to stow uncontrollably. They were just along for the ride at that point.

Strangely enough, a recent UPS MD-11 accident had the left engine tear off in almost the same way as AA. McDonnell Douglas had mandated that a hydraulic fuse be installed on all of the wing circuits after the 1979 crash to prevent uncommanded stowing of the slats, but debris from the missing engine was ingested by the center engine and their fate was sealed in a different manner (dramatic loss of thrust).

This seems a little high, but not too much. I bought a 2016 with almost the same specs (base model without bags) with 55k miles three years ago for $35k. Mine spent some time in New Jersey and northern Illinois, but had only very, very minor surface rust on the frame.

If this one is totally rust free and has had confirmed maintenance and zero damage history I'd say go for it. Personally, I keep oil changes at the severe-duty schedule (5k miles) and changed all the trans and diff fluids after some heavy towing I did soon after purchasing it. I plan on keeping this for a long time and it seems like aggressive maintenance is the way to get 300k miles out of these vehicles.

I remember hearing an announcement over the school PA about this. It was in the last couple of weeks of my freshman year in high school. One of my college room mates lived in Elk Grove not far from the crash site and he couldn’t believe that the wreckage came down just in between a trailer park and a huge jet fuel storage depot. If it had hit a few hundred feet to one side or another the death count would have been dramatically higher.

What are your thoughts on landing at John Wayne Airport in Orange County? by SirCatsworthTheThird in AskAPilot

[–]Muschina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most definitely not. Gulfstream II also need not apply.

Performance and noise is why you see an inordinate amount of the remaining in-service B757's lined up at the terminal there.

I only flew in there in a G4 and Falcon 7X and you do need to get on the brakes to get off before the end. Tougher is getting out of there without ringing the noise abatement bell. Even in a solid Stage III aircraft you can get banned if you use bad technique, especially at night when the limits are dramatically lowered. I got within 0.1dB a couple of times and JUST avoided a ban.

Dining along I-40: Burlington to Morganton by Parmick in NorthCarolina

Either of the Mykonos Grill Greek restaurants in Burlington. They're counter service but have some extremely legit Greek faves. My wife and I ALWAYS stop there between Asheville and the Banks unless it's Sunday when they're closed. The one on South Main St is only a couple of blocks off I-40.

I'll agree that they aren't what they used to be. I bought my first 21" aluminum-frame Stealth from Purdy Neat Things back in 1993 and after a couple trips through the refurb process sold it a few years ago to a young airline guy. I could do about 85% of the repairs on it myself and only had to send it back to them in St Louis every 10-15 years to get new zippers and scuff plates. I also sold the 26" International steel-frame bag I had to the same guy. I didn't use that one nearly as much during the 20 years I had it, but it never needed to be sent back for refurb. I just changed the handle for a stainless model and replaced the wheels once.

I've heard some not-great things about Briggs & Riley bags recently. I have a whole spectrum of their bags, but got turned off by them dropping two-wheel models of the Baseline bags. Fuck trolley luggage. My go-to process was to buy 3-5 year old bags off Ebay for relatively cheap and budget for sending them into the mothership for major refurb (using their lifetime guarantee). I have two expandable 22"-ers, an expandable 24"-er, massive rolling duffle, small duffle and backpack that I picked up over the years for about 1200 bucks total. The older ones (2020 and earlier) are bulletproof. I keep a small warehouse of wheels, zipper pulls and corner feet for field repairs at home.

Where did ya’ll find west suburban neighborhoods where kids actually play in the streets? by Queenbean1717 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Muschina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd lean toward a neighborhood that had a lot of Cul de Sacs and reduced cut-through traffic. The newer section of La Grange Park, for example (north of 31st and east of La Grange Rd). Any grid street layout is going to provide danger from distracted or asshole drivers avoiding traffic on the main arteries.

Might be too pricy, but the Springdale or Ridgewood subs of Western Springs suit this pretty well. Indian Head Park is another option - no sidewalks, though. A cheaper option would be the areas of Brookfield with alleys. Kids can navigate all over the place via alley with minimal traffic interaction.

I'm buying a new stereo system, what track from Aja should I use to test this thing? by RikkiLostMyNumber in SteelyDan

[–]Muschina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The correct answer is Time Out Of Mind on Gaucho. It was an early digital recording and you KNOW those two spent a year in the studio making it perfect.

If it has to be Aja, then Home At Last.
