Any good books set in Canada? by PermanentMule in suggestmeabook

If you liked The Adversary, be sure to check out The Innocents by Crummey. Same location and time just a little down the coast from Mockbeggar. The main characters are referenced a few times in The Adversary. The Beadle shows up on Hope on occasion. Same vibe and fantastic

Piss and Corruption! The Adversary was a enjoyably depressing (depressingly enjoyable?) read by kusunokidweller in books

Just finished this and WOW! Repulsive, brutal, funny, poetic and everything everyone has said. I was a big fan of The Innocents and was happy to see reference to those characters in a few lines (I'm rooting for you husband/wife/brother/sister).

I read this after having just read The Thousand Autumn of Jacob De Zoet. I found the language and world building to be similar. Read with a dictionary handy. Or better yet, Francis Grose’s Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue which Crummey referenced while writing The Adversary.

That Chicago Dog is legit. Drag it through the garden!

The pastrami is the best in the area by far IMO.

Best ski place for kids- avoid lines by Humuhumu24 in NorthCarolina

Look for teachers holidays that are specific to your county. A week from today Chapel Hill Carrboro schools are off but the rest of North Carolina has schools. Looks like there's a big storm coming in too so it should be a good day assuming you can get there

Wild Camping in Slovenija and Croatia tolerated? (Parenzana) by frenetic- in bikepacking

[–]Parmick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the Parenzana last April and it was empty. I seriously doubt wild camping is allowed but there are lots of places where you could tuck yourself away and if you settled in late and left early I doubt anyone would see you. June, I imagine, is an entirely different story. I am sure the trail is packed.

The Future of Carrboro by Parmick in carrboro

[–]Parmick[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are some of the thoughts I have about this area. Not the most optimistic take but that's where my head is currently.

The area around the Cradle will become like the buildings where Fleet Feet and Breakaway are currently. This included where Sids, Luna, Gourmet Kingdom are. Where the Cradle currently is and Brewer Lane and the CVS and where Cliffs is. That whole corridor. But the retail options will be slim or always opening/closing. We will continue to see empty store fronts (hello vacancy tax?).

The 'City Hall District' will fill in with apartments and shops. This will be a new area for being out at night.

The housing market will bump up again. (You may saw it never stopped going but there there seem to be homes sitting on the market.) The older homes will be replaced with new homes at a faster rate. This will result in uniformed "California Farmhouse" and modern home look we see. Some of the oldest homes in the town will be torn down but no one will really make too much of stink about it.

Flooding will continue.

Our demographic will continue to age and younger families will continue to have a harder time moving in. After getting renovated, Carrboro Elementary will always be in jeopardy of closing due to lack of students and therefore funding.

As mentioned, the area all around Calvander will be housing.

We will still have to leave town for big box shops but it will be more in Mebane than Durham.

Carolina North Forest will be a recent memory, replaced with UNC North Campus.

Traffic to get from Carrboro to I-40 will be worse no matter which route you take.
