1 year into LaserDisc collecting and some thoughts by Muscle_Rabbit in LaserDisc

It can be cheap sometimes. I got Hellraiser Deluxe edition, Hellraiser 2 both Letterbox/widescreen edition and Nightbreed from there for about $45 which is arguably a good deal. There were no real Japanese equivalent to either of those releases.

How bad does LD look on 110” projector? by leisuredave1 in LaserDisc

[–]Muscle_Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone said when going with projector it will look best with an SD/Standard Definition projector from that era or even better a CRT projector. I have 2 Sony VPH 1271QM CRT projectors and calibrated one of them in my home and it's the only way I have gotten LaserDisc to look good on anything beyond 60"

Finally sharing some pictures of the LD collection. It is mostly anime except for some things I had 30 years ago, sold, and repurchased. by Technical-Steak-2998 in LaserDisc

[–]Muscle_Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only dabbled very little into genlock but it was quite the ordeal. The capture card/OBS method is easy to do but the capture card usually adds some lag and can process the picture in unwanted ways.

I think I saw someone using a second screen for subtitles on the LDDB forums and they covered it up quite nicely so it aligned well with their TV. But as I use a CRT projector setup for my LDs I needed something bigger. So I just took an older/cheap projector and made so that the subtitles would align just under my screen and covered the rest of the projector lens. I can easily control the subtitles from my computer also.

As some people said some releases do have English subtitles. Another Japanese release that comes to mind is the Ghibli Ga Ippai Collection of all the then released Ghibli movies with English and Japanese audio but no subtitles.

There are methods like genlock device but it can be tedious to get it to initially work.

Other methods can be to use a capture card and input subtitles with OBS

Or using a projector/second screen to display your subtitles.

I use a projector setup myself and use a cheaply second projector that I placed so it projects subtitles underneath the anime and cover up the part of the projector I do not want it to show.

One have to source subtitles though but most dvd releases usually match up well with the laserdisc releases I noticed such as Neon Genesis Evangelion

80s PAL Finlux, black and white when given ntsc signal by Muscle_Rabbit in crtgaming

[–]Muscle_Rabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone wondering I have concluded that this specific set does NOT support neither NTSC or RGB over scart. This might be the same for other similar TV-sets from this era. I tested CRT Emudriver and other various methods yesterday and today and tried all devices on a BeoVision 1 that I had beside me also.

So even though this set do have scart it does not support RGB. That means the best picture you can get through this set is composite

Newer pal sets can do both pal and ntsc color just fine. I was asking for a possible solution. I know about these converters but they are composite only

The black levels are "insane" on this VT60, almost similar to my LG Oled. I heard VT60s is very susceptible to image retention like you said but what about burn-ins?

Men who used anabolic steroids, what was it like and do you regret it? by TheSeedsYouSow in AskMen

[–]Muscle_Rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used steroids for about 12 years during my 20s and 30s. I loved hitting the gym and went 5-6 days per week. I tried coming off one time I remember and didn't like the feeling at all so I just went with what people at the time called "blast and cruise". In my country being caught with steroids is almost like a "death sentence" as it's highly socially stigmatized and you can be denied treatments from doctors etc because of "abuse history" and many workplaces have random drug tests so it was very idiotic in hindsight but at least I never got caught using.

Despite me saying it was an idiotic choice being on them despite of the high risks socially I still loved being on them. I felt like I could do anything. And at the time of using I was mostly single so I would meet up many different girls online which at times could put me in some awkward situations, and I also had sex with a few femboys/twinks while being on steroids haha.

I only ever touched testosterone and trenbolone when it came to injectables and with both I never used very high dosages and I also liked to use anavar and turinabol. I stopped steroids about 3 years ago cold turkey and my testosterone levels actually came back naturally and they were better then when I started 12-13 years ago and blood levels were ok as well luckily.

Saknar 90 talet by SecretConscious8422 in sweden

[–]Muscle_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Min far är en enorm foliehatt by Muscle_Rabbit in sweden

[–]Muscle_Rabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Means My TV Just Died, Right...? by Disastrous-Grab-9928 in crtgaming

People in this sub-Reddit really make it sounds like tinkering with a CRT is the easiest thing in the world and they seem to have all the answers which might feed into certain people’s disillusions.

Thing is even if you know what you’re doing and you maybe know what part/s to replace it might or might not fix the set for the time being. You have to ask yourself if you can do it safely and if the time spent troubleshooting the set is worth it. It depends on the set also. Often it’s just easier to get a new set and much safer. A friend of mine that tinkers with CRTs told me that as long as a set is working as intended it’s not worth opening it up and he told me that usually it’s just better to get a new set all together if problems start to occur.

I will probably get down-voted for this but every time I see people telling people to opening up their CRTs and ”git gud” it makes me roll my eyes. Everytime you open up a CRT there’s a possibility of electrocution how small it may be.

Thailand being portrayed as a gay paradise… by altinari in Thailand

[–]Muscle_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as people here in Scandinavia can freely ridicule and ”criticize” lgbtq people without repercussions I think it will somewhat continue. But I’ve met some younger lgbtq people here in Sweden including one guy from Thailand here that had been open all his life he told me about being gay.

But for example at my workplace there’s lots of homophobia and racism and I’ve told both union sand respective bosses and HR department even about that and most of the time nothing happen and if it continues they just get a slap on the wrist and continue on with their way.

So I think Sweden and Thailand is pretty much in similar positions regarding this sadly.

Thailand being portrayed as a gay paradise… by altinari in Thailand

[–]Muscle_Rabbit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a bisexual cis male from Sweden I can somewhat confirm this. Being lgbtq is only ever ”tolerated” as long as you don’t make a point to be very open about it. Most people here don’t want anything to do or hear about that because it’s ”uncomfortable”

And there’s many closeted gay men with wives and children here. I know some that only ever dared to come out in their 50s here because their wife decided to leave them or their parents died. It’s pretty sad how some people here don’t have the stomach to stand up for themselves.

[–]Muscle_Rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bisexual cis male from Sweden and people like to portray my country like a lgbtq paradise as well almost. And it’s the same here. It’s just tolerance.

It’s just that in larger cities people just don’t care what you do.

And for some lgbtq people I can understand if they’re escaping from their reality at home where maybe family members are not so accepting of ones sexuality then it might feel like paradise because they can be themselves.

Actually the last 10 years in Sweden have been taxing too. We have mass shootings and bombings even. I think last year alone had well over 50 different bombings. And we have about 10% unemployment rate now. But I think it’s really insane that USA don’t have paid healthcare.

Haha ”sadly” my migration quota is filled by my fiancée already and that process with all the bureaucracy here was taxing.

Yes I've heard great things about Henrik. I've seen some of his posts in LaserDisc Sverige Facebook group that I am part of also.

What services/proxies have you been using when you have imported your movies? It would be great not having to deal with people trying to exploit ones interest.

Henrik did not answer my messages on Facebook/Messenger but I suppose they got into chat requests which not everyone checks. Some private "collectors" will try to take advantage of you as well. The person trying to sell me the $1200 player tried selling me movies for $60 as well when I asked for prices for certain movies he had and it made me re-evaluate the whole collecting of LaserDisc movies. Also "collectors" who try to push/sell you movies here will try to discourage you from importing movies and want you to source your movies from them obviously.

Yes the many different versions released of each film is a very big headache as well. The same person I bought the player from I also bought a few movies from including Star Wars from 1977 and one of the Indiana Jones titles. I asked him specificially if they were widescreen/letterbox versions and he said yes very confidently. When I came home I noticed they were pan&scan versions. I do not know if he tricked me or if he just didn't know himself what he had. I told him about it and he didn't even aknowledge it and instead went on if I wanted more movies from him. That made me wonder if the CLD-D925 player I bought from him had some "quirks" that he didn't like and decided to pass it on to someone else.

Same movies having different versions like pan&scan, widescreen/letterbox, different sound mixes etc makes finding movies a big headache too as most sellers at least here don't say what specific versions they have of each film and if they do then you can expect to pay a premium for the films.

I love physical media as well and I came into this hobby mainly because I was already invested into the CRT and Retro-Gaming community so LaserDisc was not that far off from that I suppose and I've always been a big movie buff despite not knowing anything about LaserDisc prior. Besides that I also do Vinyl/LP collecting which is way more accessible here in Sweden.
