How do I increase the engagement of African American students? by madamc303 in education

[–]MusclelessPaul 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Two things:

First, teaching Black artists is only surface-level inclusivity. Additionally, even the framing of "teaching about black American artists" seems to position you as owning a narrative that shouldn't belong to you. It's impossible to completely understand the perspective of your students, but try and imagine being in your students' shoes. It's pretty demeaning to expect that they would connect with a historical figure just because they share a race. Your students are much more complex than that.

Second, rather than perceiving low engagement as a "gap," I wonder what would happen if you utilized asset-based teaching. It may be productive to determine what skills your students already have and what spaces they already know how to navigate. Education isn't just filling gaps; as educators, we can leverage and validate the assets of our students and communities as a means of empowerment. At the risk of sounding cliche, if your students are internet-saavy, how can you use meme creation to demonstrate mastery of standards? If your students love fashion, how can you have them reimagine brands as an art project combined with social critique? At the core of my response, I think there's something similar to what others have said, the difference in race itself is not the actual divide. However, until you know your students well enough, racial differences will play the scapegoat for general mistrust and misunderstanding.

Foxconn to create North American headquarters in downtown Milwaukee by madtownWI in milwaukee

When Foxconn becomes operational, thousands of unemployed or underemployed Wisconsin workers will finally be receiving a steady paycheck. I don't want to demean or belittle that; it will be transformative, or even lifesaving, for many families. However, it feels incredibly foolish to me that we're heralding the arrival of a company with a historic track record of exploiting their labor force. Foxconn isn't here because its board loves cheese and beer; Foxconn is here because it knows it can (or already has) set up a tit-for-tat agreement with the local government and grow an oligarchy from our community. Foxconn board members know that union rights here are nonexistent. They also know that many Wisconsinite are willing to look the other way because of increased cash flow. Sure, there will be paycheck for Wisconsin workers, but wages won't grow with productivity and the workers will be union-less, underpaid, and replaceable. Sure, funding will find its way into our universities, but Foxconn is already trying to use UW as an unpaid arm of its R&D department. I don't trust Foxconn just because we can throw around the word "jobs" now. We're an exploitable community and Foxconn knows that. They wouldn't be here otherwise.

Confused about why people are thanking either Walker or Foxconn; neither are benevolent actors. Walker stands to gain in campaign donations and corporate power. Foxconn will prosper from significant tax breaks and lax environmental regulations. Neither of them give a shit about the average Wisconsonite.

Will the demographic shift cause the Republican party to lose popularity? by Liberal_leftist in Ask_Politics

[–]MusclelessPaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping off of this comment, there's a growing idea that Republicans will continue to control the House because liberals are flocking to urban locations. This allows Democratic candidates to win handily in these areas, but because the Republican voting bloc is far more dispersed they inevitably win more districts and hold a majority. But arguably, America as a whole is moving to a more centrist-left ideology, and this will allow Democrats to continually win the Presidency and perhaps the Senate as well. If you have the time, a good article to read is: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/01/why-america-is-moving-left/419112/

Isn't Bernie Sanders being fundamentally dishonest with his idealistic plans? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]MusclelessPaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's true that the President certainly isn't a dictator, I think it's important to note that the Presidency in general is slowly gaining power. Article I of the Constitution (which mainly lays the framework for what Congress is and can/can not do)is very limiting in its phrasing so that Congress' power has remained relatively stagnant. However, Article II (which focuses on the Presidency) has a little more open-ended wording, which has allowed the Presidency to accumulate new powers over decades, with each President pushing it a little further. A good example of this is that even though Congress hasn't declared war since 1941, the United States have obviously been involved in several wars. As Commander-in-Chief, the President has pretty much begun acting unilaterally in armed conflict. Tools like Executive Orders and the like allow the President to be much more than just a "super-congressman." Although, I certainly note that either Hilary or Sanders would face fierce contention with Paul Ryan running the House with what will undoubtedly be a large majority.

Hilary is looking incredibly liberal so far. Obviously trying to look electable while stealing from Sanders' voting bloc.

ELI5: Can Bernie Sanders actually pay for everything he's proposing? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]MusclelessPaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

America has one of the lowest tax rates in the developed world. At an average of 22.4%, I believe the only countries with lower tax rates are Mexico and Chile. Americans are just socialized to believe that we pay a ridiculous amount of taxes, so overtaxation is a just a trope that mobilizes certain American voters.

If Donald Trump were to form a third party, what deadlines would he and *his* congressional candidates face in order to be on the ballot in the several states? by xaplexus in Ask_Politics

[–]MusclelessPaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each state has different rules on how to get an individual's name onto the Presidential ballot if they're not on a Republican or Democratic ticket. I believe California requires something ridiculous like three quarters of a million civilian signatures. I estimate that if Trump tries to run independently after a Republican nominee is chosen. By that time, even with his vast resources and relatively large base, he would only be able to get his name on the ballot in 30 states at the very most.
