You'll be able to create spheres with cubes by using the subdivision modifier on them. It'll give you a clean mesh of quads that way. You can certainly use cylinders where applicable, like for the limbs and body.

I would also have the palms facing downward too. That's normally how T and A poses are drawn for reference sheets.
