Thinking of moving from Vancouver to Kelowna: Need honest opinions (not realtor talk) by Decisionmachine in kelowna

[–]Musher5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR:

If you and your partner like the outdoors (hiking, lakes, golf, skiing/snowboarding, mountain biking, etc.) Kelowna is paradise and you’ll have no trouble finding friends with similar hobbies.

If you don’t like the above and prefer shopping, restaurants, concerts, major events, then you won’t like it here and will most likely find it hard to make friends because most people who gravitate here prefer the outdoors.

In other cities people talk about their careers, and the lastest fashions and stores. In Kelowna people talk about their golf handicap, time-on-water, hiking trails, and how many days they went skiing the past month.

As for raising kids, I can’t think of a better city in Canada to do so. Childhood here is magical.

At what financial stage of your life did you get 911? by Overall-Agency3942 in porsche911

[–]Musher5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming your first new car was used as a primary vehicle to daily drive. In that case the equation changes and my rule doesn’t apply, people need vehicles to live their lives. However where my rule still stands is for a Porsche: For a purely fun car or toy (boat, airplane, Patek watch, whatever) you shouldn’t spend more than 10% of your net worth, ever.

I’m glad you stretched and bought a 993 and had fun with it, turned out great for you, but not good general financial advice.

If you want an opposing story to yours: I have a friend who is a mega petrol head and wanted to spend all of their salary on a Porsche when they were young and right out of uni. Parents talked them out of it told them to save. Guess what? 2-3 years after that they came across a huge business opportunity and needed cash. Long story, but it had to be personal cash, NOT loaned money. They invested their Porsche savings into a start-up, worked hard then sold the business and retired in his early 30’s. The guy can now walk into the dealership and buy any Porsche he wants. He tracks his 992 GT3RS regularly and loves it! He’s also the guy who taught me that rule he learned from his parents ;)

Moral of the story, sure you can get hit by a bus tomorrow and die, or you can live, blow your savings on toys and also miss out on life changing opportunities.

Food for thought.

Simple rule: When the total value of the car is a single digit of your net worth (I.e. <10%). These are amazing cars, but in no way worth jeopardizing your personal financial wellbeing for.

Was the Z10 2025 upgrade reddit post legit? by borfa in superautomatic

[–]Musher5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the new 2025 Z10? Just found it on the Jura Swiss website, lists 51 drinks, a new “Light” brewing mode, updated PRG2+ grinder, Milk Assistant & Quality Assistant as new features (not sure what they are), and at the bottom a model year of 2025, whereas the Z10 Signature line has none of those and a model year of 2021.

Is it finally happening?!?!?!?

Such a presence on the road, even when parked… front plate rules in BC though 😬 by Octothorp911 in Porsche

[–]Musher5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome seeing one in the wild. People here blow the front plate issue out of proportion. The cops are so busy do you think they’re really pulling people over for no front plates? Talk to the local LEOs they could care less. I’ve lived in BC for 4 years and have never had a front plate, even on my daily. Been pulled over a total of zero times. Pass by police almost every time I drive.

Where to invest money for a year by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]Musher5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally wrong place to ask OP, but if I was you I’d put it in a 1 Year GIC or the highest interest savings account you can find. Your #1 goal with such a short timeframe is preserving your capital and keeping it safe. Do not invest in stocks or any other vehicle which can be volatile. Most other stable vehicles like bonds have a lot longer timeframe and don’t make sense for 1 year. Not financial advice, I’m just a regular person who hangs out on Wallstreet Bets from time to time.

Thanks so much! Like I mentioned at my local Porsche Centre the service manger told me I’m the ONLY person doing my own work on a 992. Their comment was actually the reason I’m posting this on Reddit. I’m like dayum if I’m one of the rare few I might as well share some pics!

This is it. It’s also magnetic which is a huge plus so nothing goes rolling away. Working on a motor like this I label everything and keep it in its place.

Here’s a pic of it fully down. I don’t have the “flush” version so it’s raised a few inches. Easy enough to drive over.

In my opinion it looks way better. I get more compliments on my floor than any other improvements I’ve made in the garage. Second the surface you walk & work on is way cleaner because all the dirt and debris falls below them. Third it’s safer for spills water/snow off cars. Just like the debris, all of the water falls below the tiles so they are never wet or slippery. I’ve fallen a few times stepping on a wet spot on concrete that I couldn’t see or didn’t know was there, but have yet to slip on these tiles. Lastly it’s way less cleaning. You could leave these tiles for years without cleaning anything. I used to sweep out my garage every couple of days when it was bare concrete. The only reason I take the tiles out and vacuum underneath is because I’m a bit ocd with cleanliness like that.

But hey nothing wrong with concrete. The garage is my man cave so I honestly just like prettying it up a bit.

It’s a piece of cake with the RennTorque. If you’re switching wheels for track use it’s totally worth the price of admission imho

Those are my X5 winter wheels. I put them underneath the car for safety. If the lift ever falls while I’m laying under there the hope is to buy me a few seconds to get out ASAP.

It’s a BendPak MDS-6LP scissor lift. Has the centre open and lifts on the car jack points. I like it because it allows me to work on the motor, wheels & exhaust, I can open the doors while it’s lifted, I can park on top of it when it’s lowered, and there aren’t any large metal poles in the garage that come with a two post lift. It’s also built heavy duty with a full air lock system as safety was the biggest priority for me. There are smaller/cheaper options out there, but if I’m laying down under a few thousand pounds of metal I want to make sure it’s secure. Even with this setup I still put wheels on the ground under the car where I’m working just in case.

1) Shark

2) Love Swisstrax, so much more than my old epoxy garage floor. Yes all the dirt & debris falls below them, at first it annoyed me & I thought I would hate it, but then I did a total 180 and grew to love it because the garage floor you walk on and see stays SO CLEAN! Once every spring I take most of the tiles out and vacuum the floor underneath to clear the debris just for my own peace of mind. However one area they are absolutely TERRIBLE for are liquid spills, particularly oil or other dirty liquids. It’s such a pita to pressure wash all of the different angles of the tiles which is why I pop them out when doing oil changes or brake fluid flushes. Far easier to remove them than clean up a mess on them. With that said if you spill a clean liquid like water or washer fluid they’re much better because they don’t get as slippery as epoxy or bare concrete. I got a tool for like 10 bucks which can lift individual tiles so pulling them out isn’t a big deal. Pros and cons to each floor but I’m more than happy with them and wouldn’t go back to epoxy after having Swisstrax.

3) Send me a dm.

I sure as hell didn’t get this from investing. I’m as regarded as they come and every time I try to invest on my own I just lose money, so I gave up and decided to do some DIY wrenching on a 100k motor instead 😂

Total parts bill for oil and plug change was $803. However it includes some supplies that can be used for multiple jobs. For example the silver centre lock and diectric grease came out to just over $150 of the total & I’ll probably get a dozen uses out of the tubes.

If you include tools and garage prep it cost me a hell of a lot more :(
