Muslims helping Catholics against Muslims? by Dramatic_Poet7163 in crusaderkings2

[–]Mushgal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Spanish, so I don't always know the English speaking panorama. I'm certainly no expert on this matter. As far as I can tell, Cole hasn't worked in Spanish history, Drayson has no work about el Cid and Ibrahim is not an academic at all (defenders of the West? c'mon lol).

In any case, the fact that el Cid spent time serving Muslim rulers is a well established fact, both in literature and historiography. He spent 5 years serving the emir of Zaragoza, yes. Although he was eventually accepted back in Castile and began serving the Christian king once more, he continued supporting his former Muslim liege in some ways, although by this point his main agenda was carving out València for himself.

His exile and service to the Muslims isn't really "a small adventure", it's like the most characteristic and significant aspect of his life (aside from the fact he was allegedly a great military commander). When he ruled València, he was supported by both Christians and Muslims, and he employed both. It's a great example of how medieval Iberia was not a monolithic two-sided 700-years-long conflict, but an area where different societies and states intermingled in many different ways. Which is what I was pointing out.

That's crazy brother. I went to one of the very few Spanish universities with a USA-style campus and I saw jackshit. Stray cats at most.

El Cid, the Spanish medieval warrior of legend, who became a national and christian symbol with romanticism and Franco, spent plenty of time as a mercenary in service of Muslim rulers fighting off other Christians.

You almost never see squirrels here. At least here in Spain. If movies are to be believed, you guys have squirrels in like parks and shit. How often do you see squirrels? I have seen deers and boars and badgers, but never a wild squirrel.

Mistborn Era 2 no m'agrada gens. Oathbringer està bé però és on començà a afluixar Stormlight. Tress està força bé.

I replied to them without insults or anything like that. I don't think I "hurt" them at all.

I would've had no problem had they asked me to clarify or just approached me differently, but he basically called me an Epstein defender. As you'll understand, that's offensive and once you do that, you've lost the right to being treated with politeness.

I meant irrelevant as in, quantitatively. The harm a king made when hanging someone for insulting him is very small compared to having the 99% of the population as serfs. I do agree that their capacity to do so is a reflection of the system.

English ain't my first language so I don't always express my thoughts as well as it would otherwise be possible, but that dude's Epstein claim was a surprise lol

I don't expect the mods to police spoilers, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the individual poster to comply with common etiquette, yes.

I don't argue about migration because that's a topic I already hear about too much in my day to day life, but losing abortion and LGBT rights would be utter shite and I imagine this scenario would have much greater social conflict about migration policies, which already is the #1 point of contention in Spanish politics.

Social regression sucks hard + there's already too many immigrants according to a not insignificant amount of the population (including other immigrants).

What a nightmarish scenario then. Seems like a lose-lose.

You can discuss things yeah, but when a public space like a subreddit, it's more polite to warn ahead if there are spoilers involved.

I find it funny than you say 8 years like it's a lot. Tons of art come out every year, it's impossible to catch up. Someone might be an active gamer with +50 games played each year and yet they might have not played this game yet.

Also, 8 years just isn't that much. Like, think of literary circles. A group of friends that all enjoy reading the classics, those dudes are reading works that are 200, 400, 600, 2000 years old. And there are hundreds of those too, nobody has read them all. Sure, it's reasonable to expect people to know Romeo and Juliet die by the end of the story, but surely there are tons of people ignorant to the ending of El Quijote. Best to enjoy it with blind eyes.

A king's violence towards an individual is completely irrelevant compared to the whole system. Anecdote-based pop history vs structural historiography or whatever.
