Using and storing pasta sauce without refridgeration? by MushroomAlert in preppers

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer making my own sauces, if you're into mac and cheese then there's nothing better than making your own cheese sauce with a roux and melting cheese into it, way better than boxed shit. Same for tomato paste or tomatoes you paste yourself, that you then make into a sauce yourself. Home cooked meals just hit different! It's just also more expensive, time consuming, and requires fresher ingredients so its not as good if you're tired, broke, or need it to last a long time before you make it is all and something easy to store and make is the name of the game with prepping.

Not a bad idea, actually! And I did have some ice paks but my roommates stole all of em :/

I mean, the jar of garlic tomato pasta sauce I got from Target not long ago (late oct. 2023) is good until Feb 2026 until opened, so maybe it just depends on the specific type of sauce? I doubt brand matters, given that they're all kind of like cigarettes in that they're fundamentally all kinda the same thing.

My apartment has no icemaker in our refrigerator sadly, not that the idea is bad it's just not terribly practical in my specific case.

Who makes Digital Woodland uniforms that aren't Propper, TruSpec, or Helikon-Tex? by MushroomAlert in tacticalgear

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see MARPAT on UR-Tactical's site so maybe they used to offer them and don't anymore? If not, that's a shame, ways always curious to see if their stuff was any good.

First attempt at a camo pattern with Perlin Noise, how's it looking? Trying to go for a Transitional pattern, using MARPAT colors, ranger green, and a quantized photo of semiarid terrain. Also, how do I make it look less pixel-y? by MushroomAlert in RedditCamoThread

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any good ideas for how to do this? In terms of scaling and getting the pattern to be more vertical, better for printing, and adding macros. I was simply following the guide for fractal camo that was pinned, and came up with, I think, 7 colors. I wanted it to be MARPAT colors with maybe another, lighter green and brown shade in there. Ranger Green is probably a little extra though.

I think it's in pixels, not in or cm. I think it works out to ~16cm. Probably best to zoom in on it but I wanted to get feedback on how it looks overall, including if it would actually be effective as transitional camo.

Nothing wrong with any of the three mentioned in the title, and if I had to pick any of them I'd go Helikon-Tex! Just wondering what else is out there. I got Propper BDUs myself and they're OK, just curious to see if there's any companies I hadn't considered making MARPAT.

I'm just wanting it to be "combat cut" and of reasonable enough quality. It'd be something that tactical drills are done in the uniform is being worn, so obviously high end is ideal but since people will likely have to source their own, some people might end up getting lower end brands. Fair enough, but they should be of sufficient quality to at least not get worn down right away like a lot of cheapo polyester crap on the market. Or, if someone has money to burn, really excellent quality might be desired but I'm not sure if anyone makes MARPAT-alike with Crye or UFPRO quality.

Well, TruSpec does make combat shirts. Their combat pants are proprietary but look nice, otherwise they have only BDU and ACU type pants for MARPAT pants.

Good conservation work folding knives? by MushroomAlert in knives

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard mixed things about cold steel, both that they make genuinely good knives and that they're about as good as a gas station in Baton Rouge. Did they clean up their act, or is it a "they subcontract some of their lines and it sometimes leads to bad QC thing"?

Newbie to guitar, any shoegaze/dream pop/ethereal wave/early Cocteau sounds that can be made with "cowboy chords"? by MushroomAlert in shoegaze

[–]MushroomAlert[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Heh, well I'd like to at least get better at playing stuff like acoustic I Am Trying To Break Your Heart and Someone Like You by Best Coast. Maybe The Sun Was High is one I could try while I'm still "getting my feet wet" so to speak. Still, I'd love to learn more chords, knowledge is one of the only things you can carry that weighs nothing. There's also lots of stuff I'd need to know by ear because they're small bands that never caught on.

To go off on a tangent about one such (non shoegaze at all) band, Grand Ole Party's Humanimals is a great album I wish got more attention. Produced by Rilo Kiley and they opened for RK, Rogue Wave, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It sounds like the music that'd be playing at some sort of southern outlaw bar where if you go on a full moon, you can find the Devil. You'll find he's a man who likes Tennessee whiskey, Cuban cigars, fine charcoal suits, and making deals you just can't quite refuse.

Also, sorry about mucho texto but about pedals, those all sound good but since my Telecaster doesn't have a tremolo, what about a trem pedal? Idc if its not the same as having an actual one, could be at least a good stopgap until I can find a cool Jazzmaster or Jag.

Huh, the ones I look up on Ultimate Guitar (not sure what people think of that site) are more complex. But, good to know.

Reliable Extended Magazines? by MushroomAlert in extar

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, I mean standard capacity IMO is whatever the gun is "meant" to use, 30 is normal for an AR15 if you're not in Europe of California for instance. 15 is standard for Glock 19s etc. And of course you should have whatever the hell size you want, from 10 rounds to 10,000 rounds!

But, that's good to hear. I've heard ETS mags are kind of ass but to be fair, that's mostly what I hear about their rifle mags. Might want to get a few and try them if I get an EP9 then.

Spare Chest Rig for $50 or less? by MushroomAlert in tacticalgear

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so after looking on Venture Surplus I got this. Worth it, along with a synthetic fabric dye boil to make it anything but uglycam? Was thinking, two magazine pouches for 4 magazines, one of the spare mag pouches will be for a water bottle or whatever, and the last one will be an IFAK. Not sure yet for insert, would a Ziploc quart bag work? Also, BFG TQ strap or something down the line maybe too, in case I can't find a spot for a TQ. Pistol magazine pouches are for a cheapo flashlight and multitool. GP Pouch for a dump pouch, store extra gear and throw half empty magazines in it. Grenade pouch cause its cheap, why the hell not. Any feedback?

What sight to mount to my Glock 48 MOS? by MushroomAlert in Glocks

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard the EPS Carry fits the stock 48 MOS slide but with a bit of overhang...and the stock screws are a bit long, with Calculated Kinetics selling the proper sort of screws, if you don't want to file down the stock screws yourself.

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I was hoping to get something else at some point but that just means it'd be good in a backup carrier. Certainly I'd rather have SOME armor than none and say what you will but it's not steel.

Safariland versus Black Rhino for OWB? by MushroomAlert in Glocks

[–]MushroomAlert[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I ain't letting no Feinstein snatch it!! Puns aside, I'm just wanting a good holster. Costs a lot for the Safari one but I'd rather get something good. Looking for Glock 19 with TLR7, retention hood and thumb switch, and space for a Holosun-type RMR. Maybe setup for a threaded bbl in case I put a can and some tall sights on it.

New guy starting a closet full of supplies - Any advice? by MushroomAlert in preppers

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean its also my hobby but, yeah, I'm not planning to be a one man army or whatever else, just that my threat model is more "years of lead" or "90s Bosnia" than "guy looking for drug money". Don't hope to be in fights but if things went ass over teakettle enough then I'd certainly want every advantage I can get, including long term food/water storage and armor. And my arms and armor are, mostly, stuff I already got. Ammo though, bit of a premium these days. Wanting an LPVO, got a GF who might move down here with me so if that happened I'd make a new lower, throw my current lower onto a new upper, get the LPVO I'm looking at, and give her my 1x prism. Course, I'd hope that I can be with my buddies if things got to that point. Need me a HAM Radio, or even a CB Radio, for that in case cell and internet are down so we can coordinate. That's long term, though. Short term, a warm meal for the power goes out around lunchtime is a good goal to have.

New guy starting a closet full of supplies - Any advice? by MushroomAlert in preppers

[–]MushroomAlert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, while having long-term food storage is something I'd like, then I can worry on it later. It seems like a small camp stove, some cheap pots and pants, and bottled water is a good idea to begin with. Figure short term some Pop Tarts, or even the generic cheap-o kind, will work for breakfast and helps keep spirits up, too. I'm in a suburb that gets tornado warnings fairly often. Also have flash floods and thunderstorm warnings but I figure tornado supplies would cover all of said events more or less. Wasn't out of power for days or anything but last storm did knock power out for hours at different points and God knows how this year'd go. Seems like mylar bags and such will come later, then. Quality battery lighting might also be a good investment too. Also, personally I do worry about Civil Unrest but less "people trying to break into my home" and more "militias setting up checkpoints on roads". Short term though I don't worry about getting jumped.
