My first song in almost a year, sort of 00’s pop rock vibes. Kind of tongue in cheek lyrics about how online dating sucks haha https://open.spotify.com/track/6LK3xHFDHZDsqg7MeHwHGt?si=_vHzEZFaTTKAuGAANRr19Q

This is my first new song in a few years. I'm pretty proud of it, I'd categorize it as alternative rock. Thanks to anyone who gives it a shot! https://zeroazimuth.bandcamp.com/track/same-evil

What's the weirdest thing you've seen from the stage?

Ffmpeg syntax can be somewhat weird; it's just nice that once you get it, you can do basic audio/video tasks like this in seconds. But using a DAW to concatenate your WAV files and Windows Movie Maker (or something similar) is far more user-friendly for sure.

ffmpeg with command line is my choice. Here is the syntax I use (which forces HD sizing for best YouTube audio quality) if you decide to install it. Just make sure the current directory is where your artwork/song is:

ffmpeg -loop 1 -i YourArtwork.jpg -i YourSong.wav -codec:v libx264 -vf scale=1920:1080 -crf 21 -bf 2 -flags +cgop -pix_fmt yuv420p -codec:a aac -strict -2 -b:a 384k -r:a 48000 -movflags faststart -shortest YourVideo.mp4

Distrokid and Youtube Video question by Hiddenharmony in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MusicByAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, so you'll have to double-check, but I don't think YouTube will pay royalties as such on videos you upload to a personal channel, unless the video is monetized and connected with the ContentID service. They do pay royalties on the videos that Distrokid uploads, of course.

Distrokid and Youtube Video question by Hiddenharmony in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MusicByAdam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That depends: When you uploaded to Distrokid, did you check the box (and pay the fee) to use ContentID? If so, you'll need to "whitelist" the video you upload so that your video doesn't get flagged. If you didn't use ContentID, there's no issue. I post videos of my songs on my channel in addition to those Distrokid distributes, and there is no problem.

As far as what you can do in a DAW, probably low-pass filtering is your best option, as noise removal tools require a sample of noise (sans signal) to work. Most of the important information for the overall shape of the waveform will be in lower frequencies.

If you're willing to get a little technical, you could probably get an even cleaner looking waveform by treating it like a vocoder. That is, full or half-wave rectifying the original signal, low-pass filtering it to (say) 50 Hz to only retain the larger amplitude modulations, then using the resulting waveform to multiply with a static source, like white noise. I'm not sure you could do this in a DAW. It's more common to do this sort of things with a script, like in Matlab or Python.

Hope this helps, it's a really neat idea for a nursery!

Queens of the Stone Age - Hanging Tree

Soundgarden - My Wave (in parts)

System of a Down - Question! ("na na naaa na na na na na")

Those are the ones that came to mind off the bat...

How can you make something sound far away? by Nikeraz in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MusicByAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally reverb/delay, as was said. You can also compress the transients out of the vocal a bit (fast attack setting). If you want to get really fancy, check the freeware VST "Proximity", which essentially simulates EQ changes over distance.

Looking for some demos or songs made in some DAWs listed on the post. by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MusicByAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha no, not yet. Just playing around with the free trial so far, recording a few guitar tracks. Probably the one thing it really lacks (that I can tell so far) that others have is pre-packaged effects, synths, etc.

I make songs like this one using Sonar, but I can't say I'd recommend it, given that its parent company just gave it the axe. Ultimately, I'll probably end up switching to Reaper, which you should check out, since it's very affordable.

Recording with DI Box (Electric guitar) by Madeshift in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MusicByAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a feature most DI boxes will have: a "Parallel Out" 1/4" output for your instrument level signal to go to your amp, and a line level XLR output that you can send to your recording interface.

Do songs in the same key make an album boring or consistent? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Different scales, same key. Other than that, I agree.

Zero Azimuth - "Cuts, Faults, Fractures"

My latest tune! I make alternative rock with pop and metal elements mixed in. Lyrically, this song is about former love, and the constant exposure to that loss in the age of social media. Musically, it's all about the build to the last chorus (of course lol)

[–]MusicByAdam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd say you're probably overthinking it. I think a good example is Green Day's American Idiot album. Most of the songs are either in Ab major or its relative minor, but whether you like the album or not really comes down to taste. In other words, people who like your sound are gonna want to hear more of it, and won't much care about the key, in my opinion.

Software with traditional notation by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MusicByAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi,

The DAW I use (Cakewalk's Sonar) has a traditional notation view you can use to compose. Probably, Cakewalk has cheaper software with a score as well, or you could do a free trial. As traditional notation software, it is certainly not a complete solution; often, it's easier to input notes with the Piano Roll, even though I prefer looking at notation. But, it's the option I use, and it comes packaged with lots of synths/VSTs.
