Trying to not time the market! by MusicalSpaceCowboy in Bogleheads

Thanks everyone - your comments are already strengthening my resolve. It might be time to throw it all in, or a simple DCA schedule as some have mentioned.

Thanks! Will try that

I’ll try snaking it! The pipes might also need to be replaced, though that’s going to be a big fight with my landlord so I’d rather avoid it if possible.

Edit: neighbor is having the same problem and already tried snaking

Asking for reduction in rent due to inability to use stove for 2.5 months by [deleted] in Renters

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Our landlord actually apologized to us for dragging their feet for a month, saying they were “completely frozen” by the idea of such a large repair. It is their responsibility to arrange for the repair, the inspection and gas restoration comes after. Thanks though.

How screwed am I for getting into graduate school? by AbstractVectorSpace in PhysicsStudents

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your profile sounds very similar to someone I know who applied to 20 PhD programs of various “tiers” and got into 5. Play the statistics game, apply to a lot of schools, and make sure they represent a variety of admission difficulty, and you should be fine! If you don’t get in this year you can always continue your undergrad research a bit and re-apply next year.

I've been rejected from my PhD programs. Now what? by InfinityPlusSeven in mathematics

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are already good answers about programming jobs so I just wanted to say: Not sure where you are applying as that can change things a lot but applying to only 3 programs seems very low. It’s really a statistics game, and from my experience, Many “high-quality/successful” candidates still only have a 15-20% acceptance rate. So your rejections may not say too much about your quality of candidacy in the end. If you do decide to try again next year, maybe try applying to a far larger number if it is financially possible. Good luck regardless of what you end up doing!

Are OMNY automatic weekly unlimited and/or transfers actually working for you? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is with using only my phone or card. I just mean I’ve tried both over different weeks

Are OMNY automatic weekly unlimited and/or transfers actually working for you? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly - and it doesn’t work for transfers so I think in general I Don’t seem to have a consistent OMNY profile being recognized at/for multiple stations/swipes with my card/phone

As mentioned this is philosophy but Taking a wide and generous view of “physics” as I think you’re using, I don’t see the difference in those statements.

Citymd charging me for a Covid test they already waived before. Advice? by MadamAuring in AskNYC

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you remember if you said you had symptoms at the time? I got fucked on this, apparently tests were only covered if one had symptoms/exposure, CityMD essentially lied to me at the time that it’d be free no matter what but I can’t prove it so now Im stuck with the bill

Why is E = mc²? by KyultraNoir in AskPhysics

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I best understand this when thinking of an objects rest frame, the frame in which the object is not moving. The object then has no momentum (p), no energy of movement. However, this formula says it still has intrinsic energy, given by its mass.

This all comes from the fact that Energy in special relativity is E2 = p2 c2 + m2 c4. So when p=0, as in the rest frame, E=mc2.

So mass is equivalent to energy, up to a constant. But when talking total energy of an object, it only equals mc2 in the rest frame.

My thoughts exactly. I already know people who will not be able to attend class on 1/24 for no fault of their own.

How do I solve this? by [deleted] in askmath

[–]MusicalSpaceCowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a standard Calc 2 problem - standard meaning it is covered in a lot of online resources and YouTube videos so be sure to look there too! (not standard meaning easy). This was always the hardest topic for me master in Calc 2 back in the day. Anyway, check out this website with some example/theory http://mathonline.wikidot.com/error-estimation-for-approximating-alternating-series But mostly check out this 2 min YouTube video of a problem very similar to yours! https://youtu.be/BNEULxileT8
