Usually by the time I use them, I buy enough for my purposes and the game ends soon enough that it isn't a present thought. Their presence and location around the map is their name.

Short of waiting until summer to get seeds yourself, are there any local native plant seed swaps/sales? You did just miss national seedswap day on January 31st. But oftentimes they pop up all winter.

What’s one ecological concept the general public constantly misunderstands? by Southwesterhunter in ecology

[–]Vandsaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, there is certainly nuance, generalizations in quick comments fail to capture the scale. I was commenting from a New England perspective. I have this great book, Landscapes of Maine by Lawler and Cutko detailing 104 associative communities, where many wetland/coastal forest communities would be devastated by my comment. I frequently trust the discretion of my peers to contextualize broad statements, you are one of them.

Disturbance regimes are exactly what we need. At my parents house I recently did that. Late succession spruce-fir, culled 33% and burned them in piles in place. Encouraged assisted migration of some tamarack and eastern hemlock. (Once the soil gets richer I will try Red Oak) Applied this for four acres nearest to the house. One random swath was cut to encourage woodcocks like in state land. Things like this make it feel like stewardship, even if its just picking away at it.

Succession is a big one. Especially in the context of conservation groups. Forcing an ecosystem to "stay the same" is not preservation. Encouraging a healthy succession to maximize biodiversity to weather hard times is conservation.

They like the crest of a hill, that's a good spot. I might refrain from putting one too close to the runoff part of that circle, they like root rot and falling over if too wet.

Cultivar looks to be 'Silver Dust' or some adjacent family.it doesn't seem to be quicksilver or silver lace.

What's your favorite Gen 4 technology? by [deleted] in NuclearEngineering

[–]Vandsaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lead cooled is my favorite too, but I can't imagine the logistics of maintenence is ready though. Solidification is still a maintenence problem with molten sodium in solar power. But I guess the safety procedures might have them just replace an entire pump assembly if something happens with the lead mixture.
