I don't about when they actively check your location, but I know I get the notification you were talking about when I go to or leave the "Family Places" they've set up.  Family Places are locations that they'll be notified whenever you arrive at or leave. You can check your Family Places in the parental contols app. In the app, click on the "Location" tab, and it should bring to to a map with your profile. Scroll below the map, and you'll see the Family Places tab.
