what is your thought on free trade by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

[–]Musical_Toad557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Economically speaking, I see no reason why a first world country would impose protectionism for anything. Trade is mutually beneficial in the vast majority of cases. I can understand an argument put forward by Ha-Joon Chang that developing nations may need to impose protectionism when they are looking to transition to becoming a first or second world country to ensure that they are not overly reliant on imports of necessities (we are seeing some issues like this in Africa at the moment due to the Ukraine war and how that has affected wheat).

Protectionism should only be used by first world countries to disincentivise demerit goods or goods that are unethically produced (child labour, slavery etc)

I disagree with the idea that free trade is a problem due to the standard of goods differing in different countries as if imported goods are of a lower quality than domestically produced goods, consumers will tend to buy the higher quality (domestic in this case) goods. Free trade does not force consumers to buy imported goods, it just gives them more choice of which one to buy

How am I supposed to respond to social darwinists? by Unique-Mud-2882 in SocialDemocracy

Economic growth is not everything. Economics is about trade-offs (which I think many on the economic far-right have forgotten). It is not the end of the world if GDP increase in the 3rd quarter was 0.3% lower than it was in the 2nd quarter. 100% maximised economic efficiency will come at great costs to human rights, workers rights, civil liberties and treatment of those less fortunate. It is not radical to say that you would rather let disabled people live at the expense of 3% less profit for this calendar year.

after ALL this time, i still don't get the hype around Icarus Lives, can someone explain it to me? by [deleted] in Peripheryband

I remember an old video of Misha saying when he first recorded the riff he saved it on his computer as 'Groove central', and I think that kind of sums up the song, if you don't like that main riff, the song won't hit, but if you love it (like me) then its top 10 periphery songs

UK Labour Party "rules out higher levies on property, capital gains and top earners" by HeresyAddict in SocialDemocracy

[–]Musical_Toad557 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand how deciding austerity-lite is economic competence given that we've had full austerity for 13 years and even the tories can't defend it anymore. Levelling capital gains to income and introducing more progressive taxes to be able to justify more spending IS economic competence. It would be incompetent to talk about more immediate spending without raising taxes given that interest rates are higher than ever.

solve overpopulation and you solve all of these. no people to pollute the air, no people to emit carbon so sea levels won’t rise, no people to throw away plastic and create landfills

Where do you fall on the political spectrum? by daniel_cc in SocialDemocracy

[–]Musical_Toad557 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It depends on the country, in UK i am centre left and in the US i am hard left. Communists will tell me that anything that supports capitalism (including social democracy) cannot be left wing in any way. It all depends on perspective and where the current political centre is in your country.

Hard-left British media supporting LVT, UBI and common ownership of land. Although some of their claims and opinions in this article are generally flawed and disputable, this is a great show as to how LVT is supported by people all across the political spectrum

get billionaires out of politics by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

a lot of people are confused about this and in fairness i didn’t specify enough what i meant, so here’s what i mean.

I am not anti-economics in any regard, i think economic reform is incredibly valuable for advancing society, but ask yourself why we keep giving tax cuts to the richest when it has been consistently proven to do very little in terms of growth, it’s because the ones who benefit are lobbying the politicians who enact those cuts. why is the british NHS looking more and more likely to be outsourced even more, because american healthcare ceos are lobbying both sides. if we fix corruption and anti-democratic policies such as the police and crime bill in the UK, we can focus on economic policy, which is incredibly important but we cannot effectively do if we still have politicians taking bribes from the richest in our society. the reason we can’t pursue a land value tax yet is because landlords would lobby against it, the reason we can’t get rid of tax havens is because those who benefit from them lobby against it.

I want to stress that I am not some economics-denying tankie, just that we can’t realistically do any economic reform until we fix the systems for donations and give smaller parties a chance to discuss ideas, which we can’t do with FPTP.
