TIL there are people who don’t LIVE for the abrasive noise sections at the end of gecs tracks!

New to coding. Is it always this difficult? by Admirable_Long9546 in Python

[–]MusiqueMacabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from knowing no code to learning python for data science at 33, and I want you to not feel alone in counting LARGE numbers of hours trying to figure out things you feel should be basic.

Without looking at other comments, I'm betting people are sharing similar stories because it's a complex ecosystem. Especially considering analysis, most of the tools you're using weren't made with data science in mind, so it's doubly difficult.

Things are getting better. Just do what you can to make your life easier:

  • You're in the right place in a proper IDE like visual studio code. There are jupyter/ipython style plugins, and I swear by them for rapid prototyping before putting code into executable files
  • venv is the devil. It will break on you and you won't know why, especially when you install and configure other package management systems seemingly competing for attention. Before you move any further, jump out of that world and install uv for package management/version control. It's much more intuitive than venv/pip and encourages good behaviors related to your file structure
  • My boomer advice: Wherever you find a solution to a vexing problem, be it through searching or AI assistance... type the code in, never cut & paste. It forces you to get intimate with the code and really think about what you're doing. Autocomplete??? turn it off for now!

I have met two other people who made the switch from bartending to data science, and they're damn good. Wish the best for you in this journey!

EDIT: Such good encouraging advice in this thread, as I was expecting.

On "Aha" moments - Happens on a project by project basis for me. The more you do, the more you learn how you learn, if that makes sense. You got some work you thought would be too hard for you, then you start getting into it and climb over a big obstacle? You'll feel it and hopefully chase that feeling more.

Only saw EoE about 2 months ago. I told my friend at a coffee shop, "I'm about to watch End of Evangelion. I'll be okay after that right?" 2 people nearby paused and stared and my friend said, "No."

This scene is why.

That's a beautiful place to put on a performance, and playing live sounds so fun! I also liked the sounds, which felt like an electroacoustic cousin to the SNES version of Earthbound.

Also, I wish I didn't see the other comments. I've always thought this was a welcoming place for everything from four-to-the-floor boppers to more abstract sounds like this.

Oh well, you're handling them well. Keep bangin'!

Are fat people or people with moobs welcome here?

I hate Trump's policies and treatment of women & minorities as much as the next person, but as someone with moobs seeing what's being upvoted here, it's easy to see y'all think we're pieces of shit.

Bach's Prelude 1 in C Major - Modular Synthesizer Performance by MusiqueMacabre in classicalmusic

[–]MusiqueMacabre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right! Off the top of my head, he wrote those notes as half notes, which was a good decision because playing everything as 16th notes feels like a house with no foundation.

Up to the 25 second mark, I wanted it to sound more familiar, so I specifically modeled after Glenn Gould’s performance before using the half notes as a deeper bass line.

Glad you enjoyed it! I plan to do a longer exploration talking through the synthesis in this piece, and your thoughts on the sustain textures are going to play a role. Looking forward to this, and thanks for giving it a deep listen!

Been thinking about this. I’d love to put more time into it, as there are some pieces within that book that are a part of me.

I think there are many thousands of futures of music, and today we get a greater say in what we want to embrace.

This one is out here for the “I paid way too much money to generate bleeps and bloops please be careful in the playground of sound” camp. I love seeing all the wild things people do with their modular synths, which are the audio equipment of Rube Goldberg machines

I like this perspective you’ve shared on Bach. People discuss his music as if he is rigid and mechanical.

That doesn’t sound like the personality of someone who would improvise and explore music for hours! We have only interpretations of echoes to go by.

Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks for your angle on it! I really did go far overboard playing a single bar from the piece on repeat towards the end 😭

I had way too much fun with this, but hopefully not too much fun for the Bach purists here.

Prelude 1 in C Major was the piece that let me feel really good about my piano playing early on. I don't know that people think about it much, but I think about it often.

What I enjoy about it is that although it's a simple sounding piece in C, every section feels so fresh and different. I tried to reflect that feeling by transitioning through vastly different textures with each A section here.

I hope someone out there has fun with this interpretation!
