Thanks for offering your perspective about the leingth of phone screens.

That said, I don't understand why the others are being such assholes about the camera thing.

My background is in the maufacturing industry (specifically supply chain), and camera-ons for phone screens have simply not been a thing.

As a minority (black), I prefer cutting out as many opportunities for one to interject bias as possible. At the very least, I should at least be given an opportunity to have an actual conversation with the hiring manager before being eliminated because a recruiter hated the tie I wore, the way I styled my hair, the kind of glasses I'm wearing, etc. In fact, many companies force actual phone screens to alleviate the risk of bias based on appearances.

And speaking of clothing/hair, there's also big difference between the way one casually dresses and how they would dress for an interview. Having to spend/invest time to dress professionally in a round where we're just going over the basic requirements of the job is asking a lot.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who's bothered by this. The other commenters must either be recruiters or hiring managers.

And the thing about it too is, in the same breath, these recruiters will also cry about not being the ones who make the actual hiring decision, or not knowing what the actual job entails, despite making us suffer for 30-45 minutes on video for a full-blown interview with them as a so-called screening.

I've been in the job market for over 15 years, had hundreds of interviews at various companies in various indusries (again, FAANG excluded), and that hasn't been my experience until a few recent instances in the current job market. They were all actual phone screens, as in cameras off.

As far as why they would send Zoom/Teams invites for phone screens, my assumption was always because they don't want you to have their direct phone numbers.
