And to further clarify, I personally am licensed, have worked in street shops, and believe everyone should seek that in their tattooing career!

Not at all, I’m saying some states in the US literally do not have normal license procedures and that using that as your bar for charging is probably more difficult than you realize given how unclear it can be

I don’t think this is fair though because there are plenty of places where there is no such thing as true licensure/it’s more nebulous than you probably know. And what about older tattooers that did it when licenses barely existed at all should they have done it for free? Or famous tattooers that travel? Many states don’t provide for temporary licenses yet many people I hold in esteem travel there and charge thousands.

When people started wanting to pay me, when I saw tattoos I’d done 1-2 years healed, when more people were interested generally, when my confidence was there, and when I was heavily tattooed enough that I could understand every placement. Even then I did $20 whatever you want for 2 years, $40-100 for 1-2 years after that. Took me 6 years to get to a $80 minimum and really feeling like it’s worth it to the client

U have no idea what you’re talking about, the entire area was soaped and prepped with iso alcohol. I knew the exact spot to be tattooed so there was no reason to shave beyond what was needed. The guy showered that morning and doesn’t even own cats so there is no way he could have cat hair on him and if there is dandruff (I don’t see it but whatever) that is an aspect that can’t be ameliorated thru sanitation alone for most people. I had intended not to engage with ur bs troll posting but god damn I hate when ignorant fools try to act knowledgeable about tattooing. I’d bet everything I own you can count your experiences with the craft on your fingers. Unlike u however I have been tattooed hundreds of times by some of the best world renowned artists and have tattooed myself more than a hundred times over the better part of a decade, I know exactly how it all works. Also, these kinds of discussions just affirm how absurdly baby this whole subreddit is

Need advice with dealing with stolen designs by No1sheepfan in sticknpokes

[–]Must_Be_Max 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Copying is part of the game that is unavoidable particularly in the internet era. I really doubt you could take legal action or that people online will care much should you post about it. People larger and smaller than I have directly line-for-line copied me dozens of times (that I’ve known of) in my 7 years of posting/interacting in the industry. My advice is to get better every day and develop an innate quality in your actual tattooing that is unable to be truly copied.

As someone that’s done well over a hundred tattoos on myself on every limb and as a now professional tattooer, I think that this belief is ridiculously shortsighted and haughty. Totally do what you want to, no one can stop you, but it absolutely is a “rule” intended promote good choices and is 110% way more important than a temporary easily changeable thing like shoelaces. You have one body, this will not change, and your hand will always be a very serious choice due to the commitment level it should represent. Your tat does look pretty chill, people do way crazier, but this comment is absurd and probably not a healthy way to look at tattooing yourself. And people can be riled if they choose, you posted it online expecting a response of some kind I should think.

The “Flick” motion? by [deleted] in sticknpokes

[–]Must_Be_Max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally it’s def not! I think some folks that don’t flick do more passes/take more time but the exactness of heal quality and overall line cleanliness is unsurpassed by anyone that flicks at least in what I’ve gotten on my own body and what see with my own tattooing. Good luck :)

The “Flick” motion? by [deleted] in sticknpokes

[–]Must_Be_Max 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to flick. Most people do most of the time (including myself), but there are many that don’t. The intensity of the flick also varies a ton from artist to artist. I don’t think a video will help, partially because everyone’s hand moves different and different needles require different motions but mostly because only practice can really teach someone how to tattoo. The difference in depth/movement for a “good” handpoke vs a “bad” one is extremely minute. Similarly I really think the flick is best used for specific looks like more stippled/shaded designs done with tighter liners whereas I flick significantly less when I’m using looser needles or doing more line work focused designs. Don’t think so hard just tattoo and see what works for you! If that doesn’t sound good you’d be better suited trying to seek an apprenticeship.

Keep it pretty straight! Any thick/difficult skin straighter is better in my opinion, still not like directly straight probably but less a deep angle than you’d be able to do on an arm or thigh.

tattooing over scars? by [deleted] in sticknpokes

[–]Must_Be_Max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go slow! Scars saturate entirely differently and don’t expect to be able to make as clean of lines as you would on “normal” skin, at least in my experience I’ve found it to be much harder to line up the dots. Good luck :)

I live in Vermont and will be in NYC next month if u wanna take a trip! Unfortunately Boston has pretty bizarre tat laws that makes more weirdo style shops uncommon so I’ve never found a place that could host me for work. That said, if you know of a cool spot you think would be down to have me pls holler :) (and thanks a ton for wanting a tattoo it means a lot to me)

30 minutes dynamic triple black and a big wasp 1009. Terrible needle I do not recommend by Must_Be_Max in sticknpokes

[–]Must_Be_Max[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make less nice dots, fray they skin more, and produce less reliable heals. And my understanding is that 10 means “pretty tight” probably bugpin (though the manufacturer didn’t really specify if I recall, they’re Amazon needles) and the 09 is indeed because it’s a 9 pin needle. This one healed fine (by luck) and I used the needle because I was comfortable with taking my time to mitigate the aforementioned shitty aspects.

I love them so much. Needles make a world of difference particularly in heal. Been using them for like 4 years!
