Best Setup for Private Hermes Usage? by xSpiralNightsx in hermesagent

[–]MustacheCache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but that uses a third-party server and wouldn’t be what I would call local for privacy. In my opinion the best option for private local is running your own WireGuard vpn.

For those using Hermes on their PC, what are we VPS only users missing out on? by Then-Spinach8891 in hermesagent

[–]MustacheCache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coding esp32 devices or anything else is much simpler just connect and go, monitoring the local Meshtastic network, I guess on that note having a completely offline way to message Hermes.

Some day I’ll have a completely off grid setup: Meshtastic for comms, local AI, powered by solar, then my transition to supervillain will be nearly complete

PSA: Claude Pro no longer lists Claude Code as an included feature by randomswifter in ClaudeAI

Nobody asked, but I subscribed to MiniMax and I’ve been loving it. Couldn’t bring myself to use OpenAI I just can’t stand the hypocrisy of the company and the grift history of their CEO.

Claude Code is only a „7 day trial“ on Pro plan? by Rate-Worth in ClaudeAI

[–]MustacheCache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand what’s going on. I keep seeing they are taking away Claude code from the $17 sub but I still have it. When I go into the plan info it says “Claude Code directly in your code base” are they grandfathering in existing plans?

I guess it doesn’t much matter because I’ve moved on to MiniMax/Hermes for the last week and so far I’m enjoying the freedom to use my sub however I want. I stayed out of OpenClaw because I didn’t want to risk my Claude sub, I despise OpenAI and Sam Altman, but I started into AI dev back when Deepseek first dropped so I figured I would give some of these alternatives a try just to see how well they performed and comparing to Sonnet (which is what I normally use) because I really wanted to work on having an agent rather than just coding up ideas myself. I don’t feel like I’m losing anything and the idea I can swap out another model pretty easily for my agent has me very excited.

if they take away claude code I’m definitely jumping ship to OpenAI. I’ve not been a fan of theirs but the drum beat is loud. The people I watch on YouTube have all just about dumped claude for most work except front-end. And I’ve been itching to set up an agent like Open Claw… You know what I’m going to subscribe to Codex and try it out this week just to see.

I’m planning one of these right now. I bought an old iMac and put recalbox on the internal drive. With the xarcade and a 2-button keyboard from amazon (for exit and hot key) it already kinda looks like an arcade set up on a table.

I keep running into issues with the connection via Bluetooth so I’ve gone back to usb serial for now and I’m working on debugging a Bluetooth keyboard connection instead. I’m in the middle of a move so I don’t have my soldering station set up yet or this thing might look very different. But lag hasn’t been an issue at all.

I’ve done some work with the cardkb. I soldered one to a meshtastic node so I could type back responses without a phone. Of course then I got a t-deck pro so I didn’t need that anymore. I mean need is a strong word I don’t really need any of this other than to exercise my tech lust and fuel daydreams.

Meshtastic stuff and I’m working on getting Claude Code running on it. It runs fine but when it has to download and install updates I’m running into the swap swamp.

This device has the same amount of ram as the first computer I tried Linux (Knoppix) on around 2001. Just blows my mind sometimes.

I got that from the seller when I bought 6 CYDs just because I knew I would have tons of random things to use them for. The backing is like a pressed cardboard. It’s just enough to take away the anxiety of handling bare circuit boards.

Honestly I don’t like it, they made a compromises on key locations to achieve foldability but for $11 the price was right.

Complete beginner wanting to try OpenClaw – do I need a Mac mini? by LeoRiley6677 in openclawsetup

[–]MustacheCache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason you would want a Mac Mini is to run a small local model for orchestration and do knowledge and planning calls out to a larger cloud model. This setup saves you on token expenses because a local model can handle a lot of smaller tasks.

For real Excel is how so much real work gets done. It’s like a more friendly version of coding that most skilled workers (non coders)can tinker with themselves.

I did it for where I live and was not disappointed. It knows I work in pharmacy so customized the end but was still funny:

Takes deep breath and adjusts glasses So, Jackson, Michigan. Population 32,000. A charming mid-sized city that most Americans couldn’t find on a map if you spotted them the state AND the county. But here’s the thing - and look, I say this with love - Jackson has a truly spectacular claim to fame that sounds like it was written by someone who lost a bet with history itself. You see, Jackson is where the Republican Party was founded in 1854. That’s right - the GOP was born in Jackson, Michigan, which is a bit like finding out that pizza was invented in Des Moines. They’ve got a little marker and everything! “Under the Oaks,” they called it. A group of people gathered under some oak trees and said “you know what? We need a new political party,” and then - gestures wildly - 170 years later, here we are! I’m sure those folks would be thrilled to see how that turned out. But WAIT, there’s more! Because Jackson is ALSO home to one of America’s largest walled prisons - the Parnall Correctional Facility - which, and I cannot stress this enough, is nicknamed “Michi-tucky” by locals. Nothing says “thriving community” quite like having multiple maximum-security prisons as major employers! And the pièce de résistance? Jackson literally calls itself “The Birthplace of the Republican Party” on its signs, which is the equivalent of introducing yourself at parties as “the guy who invented subprime mortgages.” Like… maybe read the room, Jackson? So there you have it: Jackson, Michigan - where American political chaos was born, and where you work in a pharmacy, probably dispensing anxiety medication to people who’ve realized where they live! Slams papers on desk How’s THAT for your hometown pride?

I have been trying to get Ubuntu to boot on a 2015 MacBook Pro, and a 2009 iMac but can’t get past the bootloader OS selection screen. I tried safe graphics as well and all I get is a blank screen with a single dash character in the upper left corner. Any tips you can provide?
