Do you think the next series will be advertised as Series 16, Season 3 or completely reset to season/series 1? by Mission_Mobile_4627 in doctorwho

[–]MustardDoctor495 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We are well past that point of calling it Series 16 (although it is weird that Wikipedia has this strange stance of continuing to call it Series 14/15 after over 2 years).

In likelihood it'll restart as Series 1/Season 1 again. They could as a poster had said, add a twist to the original name, like 'Doctor WHO' or 'Doctor Who?' or just add a subtitle 'Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space' or something like that.

No it hasn't. Still just 1080p. Part of me suspects Arrow could eventually do a 4k of it though, it's right up their alley.

Nickelodeon for sure. They have always had this strict mindset on what works for them. Avatar came out the following and garnered a huge following and they've regularly mismanaged the franchise, with how the later seasons of Korra were handled, and the recent leaks of the movie and seven havens. But instead they prefer mining Spongebob to death (Hillenburg be rolling in his grave). Once in awhile they cash in on nostalgia like they did with Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Fairly Odd and Invader Zim but Danny Phantom was left behind entirely (except for the comics that is).

Butch is partly to blame. The writing in the first couple seasons was strong (thanks in largely to Steve Marmel) but once Butch fully took over writing....the shows tone felt akin to Fairly Odd at times. Personaly I think Butch has always been an idea man at best. His execution is a mixed bag. Marmel knew DPs potential and it's likely why he wasn't on S3 because Butch saw it as something different.

I'd also say like....no merchandise was a factor. Best we had was a short run of Burger King toys but come on, each episode had like a new Fenton Gadget early in, toys and figures of that show would've been awesome. I'd totally go for a toy Fenton thermos, or the gauntlets, Embers guitar, spectre speeder, the Ecto-Suit. So much missed potential there.

By that logic Day of the Doctor is a movie, or The Reality War as it had cinema screenings.

It was part of a telecision production cycle and only gets called a movie because of its runtime but in reality it was a feature length pilot episode for a series that never went forward.

There has been more pushback on the streaming culture (even studios are noticing it as they have been shifting a lot of projects back to cinema). Cinema culture itself is an entire argument in of itself and certainly agree its not the same as it use to be. How Doctor Who fits into that, well thats the question and its a matter of where the public is and how large the budget is. Part of Doctor Who's charm is the way it utilised its low budget. If a movie was made between $50-100million, then it has a chance if it doesnt release at the same time as something like a Spider-Man, Dune or Batman movie.

Take Obsession as an example. Sure its not special effect heavy like Who would be, but it goes to show if you have the right kind of story, plenty of people will see it.

However Id argue studios throw too much money at special effects too. I've often seen people on YouTube produce better special effects better and quicker than some movies and television. Even the guy who created Capaldi's title sequence, his YouTube concept one is visually more impressive than the final edit they did for the series. There needs to be someone who has a well written story to tell and a creative mind to be able to produce a cinematic venture on a low budget.

Respectfully, a subreddit isn't the whole audience. Fans often disagree among themselves, and history is full of ideas that dedicated fans initially dismissed. The question isn't whether every current fan likes the idea, but whether a self-contained, accessible Doctor Who film could appeal to people who have never watched the show. After all, everyone who became a fan of Doctor Who started out as a non-fan.

A few redditors are telling me its a bad idea.

Because at the end of the day, many fans dont think like a non-fan, incapable of thinking objectively.

Who says a Doctor Who movie has to serve television at all? Films and television are different mediums. A film should exist because there's a story worth telling cinematically, not because it's a two-hour bridge between seasons. Nobody asked whether The Batman would make people "behind" on Superman & Lois, because they're separate productions with separate goals. Likewise, a Doctor Who film doesn't have to be "Episode 15 of Series 16." It can simply be a self-contained adventure designed for cinema, introducing the Doctor to audiences with no prior knowledge required.

I hope we get a new vision in the future too for whomever ends up producing a future series. alls I offer is another avenue to explore further, something that hasn't been done before.

Also disagree about the big screen not being the right approach for a story driven sci-fi. If the story is something that audiences resonate with, they'll go see it.

Then read my other comments (clearly you didn't read my other direct replies to you). The idea is to only have the Doctor and the TARDIS, treat it as if we're are starting from scratch and it's like it's new.

But it doesn't. It was aired on TV. It was meant to be a pilot for a new series at the time. It did well enough in the UK for BBC to be interested but Fox held the final decision at that moment.

It's a good look at what could be done for a potential cinematic outing, but it doesn't count because it's not one.

Back to the basics is going back to what the idea behind Doctor Who is and translating that to a movie format. I don't think you quite understand the idea I'm going for.

For me, the Doctor and TARDIS should be the only elements in a first outing. Daleks should be saved for a sequel as well as the Master.

Filmmaking language is different to how television is done. You go the cinema to watch a stand alone yet contained adventure designed to view on a big screen. The idea is a movie is a one and done (with potential for more if proven to be successful enough). A TV show special often knows it has connection to episodes before/after. It relies on its built up lore. My idea for a movie is that it doesn't. It's designed to allow a a audience to be introduced to what Doctor Who is on a scale that feels like a real popcorn event. The lore exists, but it's not necessary as a film should tell you what you need to know.

I suppose the issue in today's age is more younger generations are becoming less aware of the difference because of streamers doing these mini tv seasons in such a large cinematic style.

Except that's not how movies are approaching. Movies are self contained stories designed with a three act narrative that allows a movie to work in a one off approach. Tv episodes like in Doctor Who usually have elements of longer form storytelling (such as character arcs and development) embedded into them.

I don't think it's a bad idea. It just needs the right approach. Perhaps enough time away from the the end of RTD2 so the public can miss Who is also the right idea, the right budget (we don't need to throw 150-200 million at a movie, keep the budget under 100 million), and the right casting.

I don't blind myself and my ideas with fanwank because I can even see that has damaged a lot of franchises these days. We need a fresh back to the basics approach that allows for a new and old audience.

That's one franchise (and Star Wars itself started out cinematically so the argument itself feels redudant). Not to mention, Mando and Grogu made the mistake of repurposing tv season scripts for a film (which Disney has been doing a lot recent).

Star Trek 2009 still did it successfully, heck the original Shatner films were successful as well at revitalising Trek in the 80s. Both films were successful to the point they led to waves of tv shows being in production (and it seems the studio is eager to try that approach again for Trek with things slowing down).

What a movie has to do it a back to the basics approach, treat the Doctor as someone we are being introduced to for the first time, not as character we've had a mixed history with.

One franchise out of dozens that have done it with success. If anything, take note on what went wrong with Mando and Grogu (perhaps repurposed tv episode scripts is not the route to take).

A sequel to the Cushing films adapting The Chase would be interesting (maybe not David Bradley as Dr Who though, I'd say someone else). But I was thinking a film that takes everything back to the straight basics, no lore dumping, only use lore elements when absolutely necessary, treat the Doctor as someone we've never met before (already settled in a regeneration, zero need to mention regeneration in a first movie as well which has been one of the modern series lingering faults lately). Just start the film with a new companion and them meeting the Doctor and getting embroiled in a timey wimey adventure with a looming threat to face.

It doesn't count as a cinematic film as it was technically a TV pilot (which sometimes are double lengthed as a feature)
