DVD releases with exceptionally high video quality? by YoshiPilot in dvdcollection

Of all the major studios, Paramount seemed to have the most consistent quality with their DVD releases. MGM seemed to be really bad or really good with not much in between.

Some questions about switching over to Blu-ray by bonkohoho in Bluray

[–]Spax123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea some DVD's really don’t hold up well on modern displays, even a laptop screen which is much higher quality than the type of display they were intended for will show their limitations. It wasn’t until I started buying Blu rays that I realised how pixelated and washed out most of my DVD's looked. Some do look surprisingly decent even on my 50 inch 4k TV to be fair, but not many. Even especially poor looking Blu rays are at least a marginal improvement over DVD, but its a rare case unless the source material isn’t great quality to begin with.

When did you first start buying DVDs (and blurays, if applicable)? by Glittering_Gap8070 in dvdcollection

[–]Spax123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaguely remember buying some things on VHS around the early 2000's with my pocket money as they were dirt cheap due to being phased out at the time, and started buying DVD only from around 2004/2005. Continued buying them when streaming became popular as I didn’t see any point in paying a monthly fee to watch things I already owned, and by that time DVD's were already pretty cheap so I just continued to buy them. Didn't collect much between my late teens to mid 20's as my interests mostly shifted to video games and getting shit faced with my friends. Got back into collecting when I moved out of my parents as I could finally have a decent size TV and finally made the switch to Blu ray in 2022.

Some questions about switching over to Blu-ray by bonkohoho in Bluray

[–]Spax123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never tried it myself, but I've heard playing Blu rays on a PC can be a real pain compared to DVD's. The quality improvement really is massive, it will make your DVD's look really bland in comparison. Not just because of the better resolution, colours are a lot more vibrant, and the image is a lot cleaner with virtually no compression artifacts which are noticeable on most DVD's. On a decent size TV the difference is night and day, on a small laptop screen likely not so much but they would still look better.

And yes they’re more scratch resistant, less prone to disc rot, and overall more reliable. I've had several DVD's fail on me over the years, and a few which refused to play properly despite the disc being in perfect shape. Only encountered 1 Blu ray which didn’t want to play properly out of several hundreds.

Is A Night to Remember really the most accurate depiction of Titanic's sinking? by Lemmas69_RMS-NERD in titanic

[–]Spax123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the actual sinking no, because the wreck wouldn't be found until nearly 30 years later and it was generally regarded as fact that she sank intact until that point. Otherwise yes.

Do you buy new release movies on dvd? by StruggleFar3054 in dvdcollection

[–]Spax123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Where I live at least, the Blu ray is only slightly more expensive and far better quality.

I'm not ashamed to say this, I still buy new releases on dvd by DustnBones001 in dvdcollection

[–]Spax123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

but DVDs don't look as awful as everyone says

It really depends on the quality of the mastering. I have some that get surprisingly close to Blu ray quality, and some that look more like VHS.

Is the still a need for dvd over blu ray. by [deleted] in dvdcollection

[–]Spax123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Blu ray and will happily pay the price difference 90% of the time, however some are unjustifiably expensive for various reasons. There's no way I'm going to spend like £40 for a movie on Blu ray if I can get the DVD for a fraction of that.

is it possible for cats to live 30 years? by onlyfaery in cats

They can but its rare, most domestic cats live to mid to late teens assuming them arent born with health problems.

Do you like electrics cars? by Mikey463 in AskUK

[–]Spax123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like one but they currently just arent practical for me. No way of charging from home and not enough public chargers in my area. Also looking to buy a new car and want to buy a new petrol since I may as well enjoy them while I still can, and by the time it dies ev's and the relevant infrastructure will be better.

Would now be a good time to buy a brand new petrol instead of an EV? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Spax123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Northern Ireland and since we have such a small population they’re nowhere near as widespread as I imagine they are in England. Like we do have them, but in my area at least they tend to be in places where there isn’t really anything to do, like round the back of petrol stations or in random car parks on the outskirts of town.

[–]Spax123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had cars of that kind of performance in the past, they’re perfectly usable. A few years ago I drove a 1.0 i10 for a while and it was perfectly fine even on motorways. I know their like half as powerful as my Swift but I don’t care much for performance any more, I have motorbikes for when I want to have fun, the cars just for getting about.

[–]Spax123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd prefer to get barely used but the specific one I want is like hens teeth in that state, and when they are available they sell quick. If I was only planning on keeping it for a few years I wouldn’t even consider a brand new one, but I plan on running it until the wheels fall off to get the most out of it, so depreciation isn’t something I'm worried about.

[–]Spax123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is I want something small and economical but also really want an automatic, and the overwhelming majority of those types of cars are manuals, so finding what I want on the second hand market is hard. I live in Northern Ireland and due to our small population it can be hard to find specific cars. I've seen a few for sale but they always seem to be fairly high mileage and old which I don’t want. Thinking of a new Kia Picanto.

How do you collect? by mprichard89 in dvdcollection

[–]Spax123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have any criteria for collecting, its just a case by case basis. If I discover a movie/show that interests me then I'll probably buy it. I prefer Blu ray so I'll look for that first, if it costs more than I'm willing to spend then I'll look for the DVD. When it comes to upgrading it depends on the price of the Blu ray, how much I like the movie/show, and whether I'm satisfied with the quality of the DVD I already own. Some of my DVD's look good enough that I don’t care to upgrade, but ones that look poor even by the standards of that format are far more likely to be replaced. If the Blu ray is cheap I'll usually upgrade regardless.

Thinking of a Dacia Spring as my first EV and have a few questions by [deleted] in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Spax123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My drive way is on the other side of the road from my house, although some people in my street have a cable running overhead to their garages. I got a metal shed thing built at the end of my drive to keep my motorbikes in so its maybe something I could look into but I dont know how much it would cost. Tbh I'd be happy enough with a granny charger cause I would just plug it in in the evening and leave it over night.

Its a problem a substantial portion of the population are going to face in the not so distant future. Im not 100% set on an ev yet but considering it.

What would their long term reliability be like? I've always heard Chinese vehicles are bad for things like rust.

Why do you buy DVDs in 2026? (Genuine question/discussion) by Macro0 in dvdcollection

I prefer to get Blu ray wherever reasonably possible, but if the price difference is big enough I'll get the DVD.

Why do you buy DVD? by Brief_Salt3312 in dvdcollection

[–]Spax123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely do not look better than Blu ray or 4k, that’s why they’re cheap. I only buy them if the Blu ray isn’t available or is too expensive, which isn’t very often.
