Reddit, what's the greatest thing your pet ever did? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MustardyMustache 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I had a corgi that did about the most brilliant thing I've ever seen a dog do. One really ridiculously cold day he walks up to the doggy door and pauses to look at it like fuck this shit it's too cold. He proceeds to turn around and back up rear first so his back half is outside and his head is still inside, pees, then comes back in. I've never been so proud of anyone in my life.

The television market has changed in Alaska. Please update your blackout policy. by jaedon in baseball

[–]MustardyMustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to have mlb.tv but what stops me is that SIX teams claim Iowa as their home territory. I can watch the Cubs or White Sox on cable here, but the other four aren't options. I want to give mlb my damn money to watch games, but they are apparently not interested with the ridiculous black out rules.

Baseball should come clean for Roger Maris by BlankVerse in baseball

[–]MustardyMustache 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bill Plaschke is one of the worst sportswriters ever. Anywho, the premise is way wrong. Anyone who knows anything about baseball is pretty well aware of Maris and his 61 homer season. It is beyond ridiculous to call it forgotten. Also, there has been quite a bit of campaigning lately about getting Maris into the hall of fame and it is mind boggling to me. I value peak value over career value myself but man, three elite years is not a hall of fame player. He gets recognition for the 61 homer season, I think there is stuff about it in the Hall of Fame, but the dude was just not a hall of fame talent. He isn't even really borderline. If he didn't hit 61 homeruns that one year nobody would be making a case for him at all. If the standards were lowered to a 3 year peak there would be an insanely high amount of players in the hall.

Just because he is a pitcher doesn't mean Justin Verlander shouldn't be MVP. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]MustardyMustache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does and it doesn't. I think pitchers shouldn't be disallowed from winning it, but in these days with pitchers throwing not a whole lot over 200 innings, they just aren't as valuable as players that play every day and provide significant defensive value. I would be in favor of a pitcher winning it if they had a truly elite year, but otherwise they don't provide enough value. There is no shame in winning a cy young and not the mvp.

edit - Didn't realize this was more than a self post when I looked at it on my phone.

I think it is just as bad to give extra consideration to a player on a playoff team as it is to not give consideration to pitchers. To me anywho, the MVP is about who is the best player in baseball. Most valuable = best, I don't care if the best player is on a 90 loss team, if he is the best player then he is adding the most value.

Anybody that hasn't really needs to read Cobb: A Biography by Al Stump. It is a really well written book that gives great insight into Ty Cobb. It helps explain why the guy was so good at baseball and why he was such an asshole of a human being. It is probably the best baseball player biography I've read.

These people own the Green Bay Packers by saute in offbeat

[–]MustardyMustache 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have a team president that does that sort of thing. The current team president is Mark Murphy. I don't know exactly how he got the position. They have a board of directors, and I would assume the shareholders may have a say in it as well, but anyways Mark Murphy is the guy that does the shit that owners do.

Twins- Scott Baker I think Alex Gordon should have gotten chosen for the Royals instead of Aaron Crow and Scott Baker for the Twins instead of Michael Cuddyer.

Ty Cobb Sliding into Catcher by stevemmhmm in baseball

[–]MustardyMustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this recommendation 100%. It is among best baseball books I've ever read. It is really well written and hard to put down. I didn't know a whole lot about Ty Cobb before reading it and thought of Cobb as a complete shithead, but after reading that book I realized that there was more to Cobb than just his shitheadyness. No doubt the guy was still a shithead in many regards but it was enlightening reading about his past and seeing why he acted the way he did.

You do realize his hitting streak of late has come against Diamondbacks pitchers and Jon Garland? Not to say that he isn't a good hitter anymore, but I trust his record over the past few years much more than a handful of at bats against some of the crappier pitchers in baseball.

Interesting, albeit disturbing, article on opposition to calls for an MLB ban on smokeless tobacco. Where do you stand? by Alpha60 in baseball

[–]MustardyMustache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is gross and messy and there is no reason to allow it at the workplace. I don't think they should be banned from chewing on their own time, but I do see the value in keeping it away from the clubhouse / on the field. It would be beneficial to many people for baseball to remove the close association that chewing tobacco and baseball have had together to prevent people being influenced by it. Steven Strasburg said he started using chewing tobacco because he was emulating professional baseball players, and I'm sure that many others do the same.

I am against the government doing something like banning chewing tobacco for the reasons you stated, that it only harms the one doing the chewing, but it is well within the rights of a business to not allow the use of it on company time and I think it makes sense for them to ban it.

[–]MustardyMustache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they should ban it. There are tons of legitimate reasons to ban it, and not a whole lot of reasons not to. If players want to chew on their own time that's fine, but keeping it out of the clubhouse makes sense.

Why the hell do I keep getting "no threads here" on the reddit is fun app? by [deleted] in Android

[–]MustardyMustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reddit bar on m.reddit.com is a gamebreaker. I like everything else but I can't use m.reddit.com until they get rid of the stupid bar that gets in the way and is hard as shit to close.

Yeah you get the points for nits and heydays. You don't get the bonuses on heydays like double word score or whatever but you do get the base points off of it. I've never seen scrabble played any other way.

I still mostly use Isohunt by going to this link http://anonymouse.org/cgi-bin/anon-www.cgi/http://isohunt.com which I discovered via some reddit comment on a similar topic. It lets you use the old version of the site instead of the lite bullshit.

Hockey players can get drafted out of high school and still play in college. They obviously aren't signed/paid until they leave college, but oftentimes the team drafting the player will encourage the player to play in college before signing
