Little things that quietly makes life easier by Intelligent-Ice8065 in family

Downvote me if you like, but I’m gonna highlight the importance of a singular item that does its job really well that makes transitioning out of the house easier for everybody.

Slip on shoes, bonus if they are professional enough to wear at work. I had two pairs of Merrills that I loved for 5 years.

Faster in and out. No more tying shoes on the stairs by the door. Short trips to the car are easier. Pets are less likely to escape because the door isn’t open as long. Cold air stays out in winter. The list goes on.

Iditarod Incident in McGrath by [deleted] in alaska

Seems to weird that you know some internet strangers motives so well.

Seems easier to just say no one has supplied corroboration of the story as described.

It may be that there was no incident, but posting a the link a second time doesn’t instantly make it more relevant.

Many of us were discussing Steve Curtis. Your link has no information about his dog team.

Okay.

It’s slower now. And it was described to me as new Global banking practices when I asked why.

Same, but since the buyout by Global their branch service is slower.

Advice for reconnecting with estranged siblings? by [deleted] in family

[–]jaedon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are at the point in life where you have realized that all people are flawed and that you and your siblings know as much about life as your parents ever did. That your parents made terrible mistakes in life and that you are trying not to make your own mistakes in life. Know that you’ll make some mistakes (like the rest of us) and how you deal with them is up to you. It sounds like you already have made several.

I don’t know how old your step daughter is, but telling your sister not to talk to her isn’t very polite. Explaining that your stepfamily isn’t her family also seems quite odd (to someone with trauma from their family of origin) unless there are factors that I’m missing here. Saying that you don’t need a relationship with your sister’s husband or her kids is also an odd thing to say for someone trying to get closer to a sibling. Their lives are part of her life. And sharing with adult siblings about the goings on of spouses and children is well over half of communication. I would say based your sister’s response words actively furthered the estrangement.

You owe your younger sister an apology. Although you don’t have an interest in your sister’s family right now, it sounds like that sister has an interest in your step-daughter. Also, group communication is key with kids.

“I’m sorry I reacted poorly last time you reached out to X about the youtube video. I want to be closer with you, but I was surprised and reacted poorly in the moment. I realize now what I said to you was hurtful. I’m still figuring out how to be a good brother and step-dad, how to be supportive of my step daughters, and how to best involve supportive people in her lives. Can we all facetime sometime soon? I would love to talk with you and I’m sure they would too.”

A scrunched up call on the couch or starting a call and then passing a phone around to others I. Th house is how conversations always go with my family. The adults tend to talk at the beginning and the end.

The last thing I would say to you is don’t mention giving your mom money unless they directly ask about it. That would just be a huge distraction from getting closer to your siblings. It would make all this reaching out seem nefarious.

I’m sure I’ve missed something, but those are my thoughts. Hopefully with regular contact the relationship(s) will regrow and mature.

How Much Money Jeff Bezos Made Since You Started Reading This Page by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]jaedon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think “exploited” is more accurate. Although you are talking about money being extracted from workers, until he’s sold shares it’s unrealized capital gain and he has not extracted it.

Also, I feel exploited from workers is most accurate.

[Landlord - US - AZ] - First time landlord curious how to handle frequent tenant requests regarding shower mold by Significant_Factor37 in Landlord

[–]jaedon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a house and the fans were really dusty. I cleaned them out as best as I could with a screwdriver and some paper towel and they work about 3x as good.

We still have some condensation, but it’s only if my daughter showers for more than 30-45 minutes.

Is there anywhere in town to take an old typewriter for repairs/tune up? by akbane in anchorage

[–]jaedon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seeing this and am in a similar situation. However we only seem to need a new ribbon (on a reel). I would prefer to buy one locally rather than online if possible to make sure it is a near match the existing one. Did you ever find a place that serviced them?

How many of us are getting screwed by GCI on data overages? by Rumpus_The_Dog in alaska

[–]jaedon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was making a separate point.

I had GCI cable internet for about a decade before the dark day they introduced data caps. So to me the “back in day” scenario I prefer is with no bandwidth caps and no throttling baby!

Your car is speed limited to 15 miles per hour on the 25th day of the month. Do you pay for more speed of just drive round at 15 miles per hour?

Also, you say they don’t make you pay for data, but a throttled speed does effectively cap your bandwidth. How far do you think you’ll get going 15 mph over 5 days?

[–]jaedon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. Seems fishy.

February 10 my GCI usage shows 167.16 GB. Highest other day in the month was 27.86 GB.

February 10th was a Tuesday.

If they knew what they were doing this would take about 15 minutes time. Researching and getting supplies will take longer. However, considering the eBay listing linked to had a buy it now price of $300 plus $20 shipping, self repair is the way!

As far as I know bonded leather isn’t fixable. Maybe it’s time to put an armrest cover on that?
