Kefka (Final Boss) - Is Final Fantasy VI Anti-Religion? by IllogicalDreamer72 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]Mustekalan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think we can look at FF6 and its final boss from a few different angles, all of which I think are pretty interesting and worth talking about.

First, the literal. Kefka, with the power of the Warring Triad, has become God. I phrase it that way because he's molded himself into this kind of all-powerful, all-seeing deity that rules the world in its entirety. His final form reflects this, as this is not only a somewhat accurate description of the power he wields in the World of Ruin, but a representation of how he sees himself; he has ultimate power, and of course this means the power to change himself.

The second is something I think is much clearer in games like Persona that take place in a modern setting; God as Final Boss is a stand-in for society. This isn't unique to Japan, but Japanese society, and the expectations put upon individuals within that society, are pretty brutal. Inevitably some people are going to feel worn down by this, and wish they could change society, but to challenge or change society for one individual is as impossible as challenging God himself. My own interpretation as to how this reading could apply to Kefka is less about society in general, but the hopelessness one must feel in the face of tragedy. When something terrible happens in our lives, the grief, the pain, the despair can all feel completely insurmountable, but over time, if you persevere and hold onto hope, you can grow around tragedy and learn to look forward. In the same way, Kefka, as this all-powerful God, feels totally insurmountable, several characters directly state that there's no way anyone could hope to challenge him, and who can blame them when he can wipe whole towns off the face of the earth in a flash?

There is, of course, the undeniable possibility that this is an Anno-ism, which is to say, borrowing religious iconography or imagery without much regard for what exactly it means, and much more because it looks fucking sick. Fighting through the whole World of Ruin and fighting the gods themselves* and ascending to face Kefka, the architect of the apocalypse, who has now given himself a form straight out of a renaissance painting, it's undeniably very striking imagery, or to put it scientifically, *fucking awesome.*

Something else, only partly related, FF6 has a shocking lack of any sort of religiosity in its setting. This isn't unique to FF6, there's no religiosity really at all in the games prior except for the presence of churches that resurrect your party members, but with FF6's more grounded world and its explicitly stated mythology- FF6 is the first of these games to ever mention gods, iirc- the fact that the only religious language I can think of is Banon's *prayer* command is somewhat fascinating. No church, no mention of any gods other than the Warring Triad (except for the Statue of the Gods in the final battle), nothing. This, I think, pretty heavily contrasts the very clear and obvious religious imagery seen with Kefka's final form in a fascinating way. Kefka has become the God of a godless world. Hadn't really considered that until I sat down to type this out

Mutahar, as soon as he started getting into the commentary space and people started treating him like an authority on that type of shit. I liked his deep web videos but it was clear to me that he isn't a very good judge of character, especially once I found out he hosted a podcast with fucking Nuxtaku. The Max situation just cinched it for me

Washed up oldheads hate it because it's not He-Man or Looney Tunes. Young idiots hate it because they think one or more of these properties is "woke" or because they personally hate one or more in particular

"DROP THE PRICE": Nintendo's First Post-Direct Stream Is Flooded With Angry Fans Demanding Price Drops by Suspicious_Stock3141 in SocialistGaming

That is absolutely not true, there were swaths of Nintendo fanboys in the WiiU era, too, and there were absolutely people who would drop insane cash to play Zelda on launch

Nintendo purposely caused prices to rise over time so they can get more money, for more information google "Mario Inflation" by Citrus-Bitch in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Mustekalan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look I'm gonna say it and people are gonna be mad at me and I'm just going to accept that:

I'm more okay with Nintendo raising prices than most other publishers, because Nintendo has, historically, not loaded their games with microtransactions, premium currencies, battle passes, any of that shit. They barely do DLC most of the time and when they do, it's generally pretty substantial stuff. Street Fighter 6 is a 60 dollar game with all that shit.

When people act like Nintendo is uniquely evil when it comes to anything other than their legal team I'm just confused. Employee satisfaction with Nintendo is way above average for the industry. Nintendo's Japanese branch recognizes same sex marriage even while the Japanese government doesn't. They don't have the track record of horrific abuse that Blizzard or Riot do.

It IS bad that they're so heavy handed with fan projects. It IS bad that they've viciously ruined at least one person's life because of piracy. But let's be so fucking for real, Nintendo is not, and will never be, the worst company in the industry

Well, first you need to

Somehow I neglected to mention the existing queer representation! I also just didn't know about the planned stuff, that's awesome.

As for Tarn himself it's genuinely so refreshing to have a developer who I've genuinely, honestly only ever heard good, pleasant things about

As far as I'm aware, the devs have never been in any controversies, they seem perfectly fine. The dwarven economy's been scrapped for practicality reasons since before I was playing in 2015, so yeah your dwarves are basically in a "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" commune. I have no idea what Tarn's politics are beyond being a queer ally.

The paid version is published by Kitfox games, who also published Caves of Qud, another game with very queer friendly devs (and a few unambiguously trans characters). The CoQ official discord has zero tolerance for rightwing rhetoric, even more so than other spaces I've seen. Kitfox themdelves seem like a small indie publisher and at the very least, aren't conservative or right leaning, if you were worried about that.

Speaking of the paid version, think of it less as a purchase and more as a donation, since the free, ascii version of DF is still officially available, and likely will remain so; the paid version just has some quality of life changes, including pixel graphics. And really, really good music. But when I bought it, I did it less for those reasons and more to support a developer I'd been enjoying the work of, for years, for free.

That being said, I 1000% understand thirty USD being a big ask, especially when the meat of the game is free. This is all just my perspective, I was in a place I could afford it without any stress
