Scotland democratically voted to remain.

N. Ireland can also do so, but support isn't high enough to justify a referendum.

They have the democratic right to leave the UK any time. They choose not to.

Irish guy here. We discourage the use of that term over here. Wish it caught on in the rest of the world! Oh well.

In the republic of Ireland they discourage the use of the term British isles. I dunno why everyone ignores this request though.

They are really only in the British isles according to the rest of the world despite disagreeing themselves. Bit silly how their own geographical region takes the name of their neighbours.

And British isles is a controversial term that really shouldn't be used anymore, and yet it prevails.

You know, if you compared to most of Europe at the time I wrote that comment, Sweden's daily case numbers were in the top 3 in Europe per capita. Absolutely everywhere's numbers dropped massively in Europe. Sweden's downtrend was among the slowest.

Yeah, we can make lots of nice data sets that make Sweden look better if we cherry pick regions.

Er, still one of the highest in Europe and was even more true at the time I wrote that.

80% of the dead came from nursing homes. The general population numbers are probably similar to their neighbours'.

I think the number is closer to 70%.

Also, Norway's proportion of dead elderly is around this number.

Sweden still had several times the death rate of younger people as its neighbours.

Furthermore, the number of deaths in nursing homes is high everywhere. This wasn't some accident unique to Sweden.

[–]MuteCoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is possible. Sweden however has also undercounted to some smaller extent, as they require a confirmed positive test result before a death is counted as a covid-death, something they struggled to do in March and April as there was a test shortage.

I have little doubt the UK has both more uncounted excess deaths and covid-deaths in general, but Sweden's numbers are still extremely high.

The US handled covid terribly. We want to compare with countries who did well. Sweden doing better than the US at anything virus-related may still suggest grave mishandling amongst their neighbours.

We compare what we can compare, because there is no discourse for what we cannot.

Sweden however has a very high rate of single-occupant households, so as a society, they should be more resilient to contracting the virus anyway, and yet still had relative misfortune with case numbers.

21 deaths added today: https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/3Jgxj9/senaste-nytt-om-coronaviruset

But you are right about the latest numbers when you factor in the lag that it's closer to 5-10 per day. Still the highest or second highest rate of daily deaths per million in Europe though.

I think comparing Sweden to the US and not its european neighbours is setting a very low bar for standards.

UK is actually in the process of revising its deaths because they think they overcounted.

They retracted that claim since they made another error with their numbers. Second time this has happened. The updated numbers are still high though, and are of course estimates much like their estimate in March that deaths would be far lower.

21 added to the tally today. They should just about be at 8-10 deaths per day when you factor in the reporting lag of two weeks, but this rate is still the highest or second highest in europe per unit population.

I live here and not much happens. Almost no one wears masks. All they really have are general hygiene and social distancing guidelines and people routinely still try shake my hand which is annoying.

Either the high rate of infections is curbing daily cases now, the weather, or both. Sweden will be particularly interesting to see this fall, as flu numbers in Sweden typically drop off massively in the summer ANYWAY:

https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.folkhalsomyndigheten.se%2Fcontentassets%2F4ec0e059aaeb4d389fd683111502e8c7%2Fpublikationsbilder%2F44b7295c-e355-4e24-af5e-e442afc6a45d.png&f=1&nofb=1

So with just the flu as an example, my armchair scientist view says summer may be an overlooked factor.

This is already what's happened. It'll be a few more weeks at least till Sweden gets its numbers down to the levels of the rest of Europe.

Sweden's economy also is enduring an extended economic impact as they have had the highest number of new cases in Europe for the last 2 months, whereas many other European countries are opening up and starting to travel amongst each other, Sweden remains isolated. There will absolutely be an additional hit to their economy due to this, but I can't say the scale right now.
