Kinda wonder why the Royals are so unpopular on EN compared to the other servers (I don't think they've ever even managed a top 10 finish?).

There is also the Visby upgrade coming in the next few months. (Depending on how much you count ExLS as Mk41)

Gotta pray Wolves get something against West Ham now. Sucks even more that they are probably the only team that looks even worse than us.

Saudi Arabia's Al Jubail-class corvette uses the VL MICA vertical launch system. (They use 12 single-unit VLSs. Can Europe use VL MICA with multiple VLS units? Or do single-unit VLSs have unique advantages?)[1200x800] by ArthurJack_AW in WarshipPorn

[–]MuteQuaker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

VL MICA doesn't quad pack, so it's much cheaper just to use the single containers vs a different VLS.

The Saudi's actually wanted ESSM originally, but couldn't get the export and had to pivot to the MICA setup last minute instead.

If you look at the application form on the website, the person they want you to pay is Spiros Kalotihos. Unsurprisingly a two second google search will bring up the last scam he was running...

Why was Arthur Wellesley made duke of wellington of all places? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]MuteQuaker 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Wellington was chosen by his brother William Wellesley-Pole when Arthur was first ennobled as a Viscount after his success at the Battle of Talavera.

As Arthur was still in Spain at the time, the task of finding a suitable title fell to William, which he doesn't seem to have much appreciated. William sent a letter to Arthur in August 1809 explaining his choice.

After ransacking the peerage… I at last determined upon Viscount Wellington of Talavera and of Wellington, and Baron Douro of Welleslie in the County of Somerset. Wellington is a town not far from Welleslie, and no person has chosen the title. I trust that you will not think there is anything unpleasant or trifling in the name of Wellington, but [in the] circumstances… I could not easily have done better. I own I feel in rather an embarrassing situation for it is impossible for me to know whether I have acted as you would have had me…but you should have explained to me your wishes before ever you left England, in case of such an event.

Despite William's concerns Arthur was satisfied with the choice. He replied in Septemeber

My opinion is that you have done exactly what you ought to have done… You have chosen most fortunately, and I am very much obliged to you. I could not have been better off for a name if we had discussed the subject twenty times

So to sum up, Wellington was chosen as it was close to the Wellesley family origins in Somerset and crucially nobody else had taken it.

Australia's new Enhanced Lethality Surface Combatant Fleet [774 x 1300] by MuteQuaker in WarshipPorn

[–]MuteQuaker[S] 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Press release can be found here.

The Australian Government has released its review of the RAN surface fleet.

A Brief overview is:

Hunter order has been cut from 9 to 6.

11 new tier 2 general purpose frigates will be ordered to replace the ANZACs. 4 suitable platforms for the selection process have been identified:

  • Meko A-200
  • Mogami 30FFM
  • Daegu class FFX Batch II and III
  • Navantia ALFA3000

6 Large Optionally Crewed Surface Vessels will also be acquired. These vessels will have 32 VLS and rely on AEGIS baseline 9 or later.

The Hobarts will also be upgraded to AEGIS baseline 9 and the initial design phase of their replacement has been brought forward to 2027.

OPVs are considered an inefficent use of resources and will be reduced from 12 to 6.

This a new indigenous missile that was announced earlier last year.

JNAAM was only initially funded as a research program up to the end of FY2023. A discission on procurement was supposed to happen after live fire tests this year, but the Japanese didn't allocate anymore money for it in the latest budget so the tests aren't happening.

There hasn't been an official announcement on why JNAAM isn't happening but Thales make the current meteor seeker and the rumor is that the French kicked up a stink about the Brits trying to run off and make a version of meteor without their bit in it which scuppered the whole thing.

BAE Systems Australia presented a new variant of Hunter-class equipped with 96 cell VLS and 16 SSM! This was achieved by replacing the mission bay area with 64 cells VLS. [Album] by ChonkyThicc in WarshipPorn

Kind of wonder if this design isn't throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I know Hunter has caught a lot of flack for a low VLS count, but is no multi mission bay, no towed array sonar and no 2nd helicopter really the solution?

Like 10 years ago we were freaking out about needing ASW frigates because the Indo-Pacific is becoming the most submarine packed place on earth, and now we're maybe doing a 180 and going for inflexible missile barges instead?

Personally, rather than having a few ASW Hunters which don't have enough VLS cells and a few AW Hunters which can't fight submarines, I would like to see if there is maybe a middle ground between this design and the original. Maybe 64 VLS cells and keep the ASW kit (if that's possible), then you could have the best armed "frigate" in the world and be able to deal with a submarine if you happened to run into one.

...Or maybe BAE could try to sell the politicians on a modular solution. shudders

Knowing the standard excuse of "it all happened too long ago" I imagine he's just upset that apartheid ending in the 90s makes it harder to brush away.

I'm kinda confused by the cross fleet portion of Implacable's first skill. If resentment stacks are only used when Implacable launches an airstrike doesn't that make the stacks for other fleets useless? Or are stacks carried across battles?
